I own a PS2 disc that's scratched to hell and back it somehow works.

How does this happen. I've had discs with 3-4 scratches that completely didn't work. Can someone explain this to me?

you got lucky that the scratches weren't deep enough to damage the data part. light scratches only hurts the plastic protecting the data inside.
