Running Sims 3 well is luck. I had better luck on it with an older computer than I do with my current recent set up, the game is just really poorly built.

As content goes, Sims 3 has a lot more of it in regards to what you can do in game and the variety of sex options you have rape,
bestiality, prostitution. The Sims 4 stuff is way less finicky and much better looking even after Sims 3 mods though. If you intend to try both, start on 3, it's hard to go back to after you try 4 just because of the performance and graphics even though it is technically functionally better.
