Well, they were so sure Battleborn would be the next big thing, its disastrous performance probably left them pretty desperate for a quick fix. And hey, people liked Duke3D and Bulletstorm, why not do something with those, make some quick cash?

Unfortunately, between their pricing plan and the G2A thing earning them bad press, they just dug themselves a little deeper.

There are restrictions in the trial. You can't play PvE, meaning that the only way of getting gear is by buying chests with credits earned in matches, and those are given very slowly. The roster is not fully unlocked if you're f2p too, instead it's a free rotation and you have to buy characters you want to keep
