Those are the ones I use minus all the cosmetic mods. You may not like true concealment due to the way it alters the timers but I prefer it because it allows a more planned and tactical approach to timed objectives.

I just picked this game up and I'm having difficulty. Playing on the Veteran difficulty and I can't help but feel like camera angles are all sorts of fucked up and my line of sight is always way less/more than I think it is. I downloaded a mod for the game that gives me more combat information that goes into the rolls and I found that a Faceless monster attacking me had a 100% chance to hit me (not just 100% in the menu, I know that's false, but TRULY 100%) and he missed my character. TWICE. When I win I feel like the game cheated to let me win/got really lucky, and when I lose I feel like the game went the other way. I've played about ten maps so far and out of all of them except for one I felt like I got extremely lucky/totally fucked. Does the game get better as I get better soldiers? I haven't attacked the first Advent Blacksite but I did Skulljack an Advent Officer. I usually savescum these games and I'm trying my goddamn hardest not to but when I miss a Faceless point blank with a shotgun it makes me want to fucking scream

Something to remember when playing XCOM is to only take chances that you are likely to succeed in. Not every fight is one you will win, so it's not unreasonable to evac from a mission or two to save your troops. Always have a backup plan if your sniper with a 90% chance to hit misses. Always use the high ground, it gives pretty nice accuracy bonuses which are essential for rookies. Yes, with better soldiers come more easily winnable fights so expect in the early game to feel a bit overwhelmed but by mid-game you should have things mostly under control. Always have a grenadier or two in the squad to shred enemy armor after the early game. Always use high cover when available. Oh and never be afraid to lose a soldier to bad luck, it happens to everyone.

Oh and install Gotcha (Flank Preview Evolved) if you haven't already. It helps with knowing if you move a soldier to a position if the game counts it as flanking or not. You could check it manually but it's a pain in the ass.

The changes to the strategic map are definitely the most interesting. Being able to issue orders so your missions have True Concealment mechanics for the month or other things is neat.

I also like that instead of just straight-up nerfing grenades, they turned the use of grenades into a tactical decision with the zombies. Nerfed grenades that can't even destroy cover are so disappointing.

This. I feel like people who play XCOM tend to not make contingency plans. Instead of playing to the game and having backup plans in case that 65% shot misses, they go balls to the wall and have their whole gameplan rely on that shot hitting, and then eating shit when it doesn't.

RNG is a part of the game and always will be If your odds suck, maneuver around to try and get into a better position for flanks. Use grenades for guaranteed damage. There ARE ways to mitigate it.

Of course there's always times where something goes catastrophically wrong anyways. But THAT'S XCOM BABY

Why would you not want based ayy defectors in your squad?

What would be cool is if your squad interacted with each other and had relationships and such that affected their combat abilities and unit cohesion. Like if they were a close-knit unit they would move and coordinate more effectively, watch each others' back automatically, do team-up attacks, get bonuses, etc, and in the barracks and such they'd have different interactions and animations with each other.
