Should I play the first one or the second one?

Both are really clunky, slow, and dated, if you don't have nostalgia from playing them as a kid there's a good chance you won't like them. I refunded KOTR2 almost immediately because the movement, camera, and combat was just horrible for me

Two is an edgy takedown of the story of One so it loses a lot if you don't play KotOR first.

You should definitely play both. For me, playing KOTOR 1 for the first time was fucking magical. I liked the second one, too.
If you can only play one than tt depends on the type of star wars fan you are.

KOTOR1 borrows most of the critical plot points of the original trilogy, including a big space station you have to defeat, theres a weirdo evil space wizard lord and the sith are definitely the bad guys while the jedi are definitely the good guys.

KOTOR 2 is a game that is critical of its own universe. It basically goes into an in depth analysis of the force and how it and the jedi are the cause of the galaxy's troubles. As a story it is vastly more interesting and "deep" than KOTOR1. Game mechanics wise, 2 is a flat upgrade over 1 in every area.

KOTOR2 was released basically only 75% completed because of mismanagement on the part of the developer and other circumstances that were out of their control. On release KOTOR1 was a superior game to KOTOR2. However, with the restored content mod KOTOR2 is now vastly superior to KOTOR1.

They deserve to be played in order and together, op. Do not play 2 without the restored content mod.

Oh, also, in kotor2 Light Side is better with melee, and dark side is better with force powers.

Until near the end of the game, dark side is much harder in some parts because you go against bosses that light side doesn't. Some of them are "ehh", but I would say that the strongest enemy in the game is among them.

Near the end of the game however you adquire new force powers and everything is easy if you are cautious.
