I didn't have a problem on level 1 difficulty, but it actually took me a few attempts to complete level two.

To test the waters I tried Level 4 Grand Prix and was promptly annihilated.

I haven't had a clean victory run on level 2 yet, Do you find being more aggressive or defensive works better?

I find I almost never block, but i almost never successfully counter a grapple, though they are pretty easy to dodge unless its from Ninjara as a block/dodge counter.

I'm maining springman while I nail the basics.

The game rewards defensive more, but I think some characters are geared towards aggressiveness better.

Closing the gap with Ribbon girl insane movement allows me to punish people who play way too defensively.

The biggest thing is really understanding the range of effectiveness with your arms. Slapamanders have this medium range sweetspot. Dragons have a long range sweet spot. I think Toasters are good at close range

I watched the invitational and it just seemed like tossing out punches and hoping the enemy was unable to dodge. It seemed far less engaging than say fighting games. Did I miss something or is the game really just that?

The mini games are complete ass because the AI's input reader makes it way worse than a normal fight, especially the target hit where the AI can know exactly where the targets will be and exactly how to rake up an incredibly high combo. It took me 2 hours to beat byte and barq on level 3 because of how easily they could abuse combos with having essentially 3 punches going out at once, multihit arms that are able rake up combos on a single target (beyond retarded for a feature), an additional AI (barq) that can combo you but you can't combo it (you get 10 points but it doesn't factor into combos like hitting the enemy normally does, nor can you grab him) AND absorbs the shock explosions from the shock ball.

The game mode, along with the basketball one, was not meant for an input reader it was meant for pvp or an actual AI. They just shoved their input reader into it thinking it would be fine when it blatantly isn't, and makes it so it's like playing 5 difficulty more than what you are.

Being able to launch punches curving out to hit an evading foe, the inability to block if one of your arms is extending/contracting, ability to toss one punch then a follow-up to also hit evading foes at the cost of your own defense, stages that can radially change your game approach, different arms able to overpower enemy arms flying towards you...
The rest of the invitational was terrible to convince me to give it a go. I'll look into it if I ever get a Switch.
