Are gaming laptops a meme?

Yes

Yes

>>381072351
Hai
>>
A marketing meme, yes, because they're all terrible for gaming.
Thermal throttling out the ass
30 minute battery life
3X more expensive than a desktop with similar parts
>>
>>381072351
>playing on a keyboard that's two inches above the rest of the table and your other hand
Enjoy your carpal tunnels desu senpai.
>>
>>381072580
Those are some ridiculous exaggerations.
>>
>>381072351
They're great if:
1-you're a casual
2-room is limited
>>
>>381072351
Yes.
>usually 3x the price of its computer counterpart
>almost always mid tier PC's
>overheats like a motherfucker
>can't even use it on the go like you're suppose to, would die too fast
>have to use the shitty laptop keyboard
>have to use their shitty small monitor

Anyone who buys one is either rich beyond caring, or a moron.
>>
>>381072351
Yes.
You don't need high-end gaming to be portable.
Get a high-end PC and a shitty laptop for work stuff.
>>
>>381072351
Had one for few years and I regret it. Never going back.

>Overheating by the fucking balls, computer shuts off because you're running Crysis.
>HDD kills faster
>Expensive for shit hardware.
>Games just don't run as well as they should be.

Only laptops you should be getting are those that are cheap and let you play old games on the go.
>>
>>381072669
This
Laptops have their place, but the virgins here will obviously disagree with you
>>
>>381072901
Did you read the thread?
>>
>>381072351
No. If you absolutely want a laptop, high end gaming is viable for similar costs. It used to be a meme but they are pretty close these days.
>>
>>381072351
What if you only want to emulate games at the same level of PSP and PS2 games? Is a laptop more than enough?
>>
>>381072656
That's exaggeration alright, but not ridiculous
>>
Do so-called gaming laptops even use a mechanical keyboard?
>>
>>381072351
I move around a lot. Only reason I picked laptop.
They overheat like crazy and have no battery life.
>>
>>381072580
repair and maintenance cost is also high
>>
Just get a normal laptop with nvidia
>>

>>
no.
dont let this /v/irgins to affect your opinion .

there are near to cold laptops with desktop performance these days and they are comfy as fuck.

of course old keks here think laptops stuck in 1999 or something
>>
>>381073196
Yes, though the same could be said for modern macbooks, given that they solder everything so if your hard drive dies then your entire laptop goes in the trash.
>>
>>381072351
matters
if you use your computer a lot and need the power, gaming laptops offer a lot of flexibility.
I use mine as a mobile workstation and i'm never going back to desktops

>>
>>381073436
depending on your "work", a workstation laptop doesn't require nearly as much power as one that is expected to play modern games, especially as far as the GPU is concerned, which is where a lot of the price and heat comes from.
>>
I'm a trucker, so I need one, but without such an extreme limiting factor? Not worth the price bump and lack of overclocking.
>>
>>381073830
im assuming its an all media machine?

Do you play an hour in the cab after a 17 hour drive? or at the truck stop?

best meals at the truck stops?
>>
Not an inherently bigger meme than consoles are.

You're still putting out way too much money for way too shit hardware because [COMPANY] made it.

Performance is not an issue as long as you have the money to pay for it, overheating on the other hand is pretty much expected.
My laptop ran bitcher 3, gta v and fallout 4 on medium to high settings but it heats to 65 °C/149 °F on summer right now while playing dark souls 3 in silky smooth 40-50 fps. It doesn't really effect the performance but a laptop that hot is kind of concerning to be honest.
>>
>>381073502
Alienware :^)
>>
>>381073962
Absolute most you ever drive in Canada is 13 hours a day, 11 in America, and you need a day off every week or so.

I stick in the cab, not much sense going into a truck stop just to be in the company of almost exclusively old shitty rednecks.

I don't have nearly so much free time on work days as I did at my old 9-5, but not having anything else to do means I still have a good amount of time for games/movie/T.V.

And truck stop meals tend to be kind of shitty, especially since it's mostly chain stores now days that jump the price on crappy cold pizza. I try to eat as much microwavable leftovers from home as I can.

I honestly don't know what's wrong with them.
I have a Lenovo Y500 for almost 5 years now and its still plays most recent released games on the lower/medium settings.

There isn't a better combo right now than a shitty laptop for FPS and strategy games + PS4 for third person, exclusives and Nip stuff.

Recent PC exclusives rarely ever need high performance rigs, save for maybe some multiplayer FPS games which I don't care about.
>>
yes most of the time

Most CPUs do 90 before they're even considered to be in the worry-zone. I know computers that idle in their 60s.
>>
>>381074373
Why hasnt anyone fixed laptops overheating problems
>>
>>381074953

Because it's a laptop? You can't fit water-cooling inside there and you can't get proper air-flow management inside a rectangle that thin.
>>
>>381074953
jewish merchant wants laptops to overheat so they have a shorter lifespan
>>
Any gaming laptop Ive had has never lasted more than a year and all struggled with overheading. Waste of money every time.
>>
>>381072351
Mostly. They're overpriced as fuck and should only be bought if you need it which is just in 2 cases:
-you travel a lot and don't want to haul a huge rig everywhere
-you have no space
>>
>>381075037
So the only solution or crutch is those laptop fan coolers you place below?
>>
>neets dont understand that you cant use your """""gayming""""" pcs away from home
Just shut the fuck up you retards
>>

Combined with heavy throttling to make sure the machine never goes too high, yeah.

>>
>>381072351

except unlike most items fitting that description they're not $10 at toys r us

you don't need to game on the go
laptops are for remoting into desktops
>>
>>381075248

Why'd you play videogames while you are outside? What's the point of acting all high and mighty if you do the same as neets only somewhere outside your home?
>>
>>381074428
So every time I pass a trucker on the back roads I make sure to throw a drink or something at him followed by flipping him off just to show how much I hate you all and think you should stay off of the roads

Why? I'm not a trucker, but I will be a delivery guy soon.
What's your beef?
I wouldn't suggest actually doing that, some of them get really angry and they have access to a really big vehicle.
>>
Laptops aren't a "meme". They work for gaming just fine nowadays, tech has become so compact that it's easy to find a laptop that can cut through even modern games like butter. That being said you are going to pay for it, waaay more then you would for a desktop of equal power, so unless you have actual need for the portability then there is really no reason to pick one over a normal desktop.

All modern laptops are just as bad as they were in the 90's. There's no such thing as a comfy laptop.
>>
I'm moving around alot as a part of work, I bought a gaming laptop a week ago, it's pretty nice, I really like being able to play Dragons dogma and bayonetta wherever I want. Also I get to emulate whatever whenever, also great for plane journeys. If you're not loving around issa meme
>>

Not at all, but they have extremely poor price-to-performance ratio. You get good power for a machine that size and portable, but you'll have to pay an arm and a leg for it.

How does it feel being an annoyance to everyone you know?
>>
>>381077391
You tell me
>>
>>381073192
Same thing. I'm in an apprenticeship so I travel 300km away every 2 weeks and it's the only reason I bought a laptop. Other than that, the battery life is poor and if an old-ish game wasn't specifically optimized for laptops it will run like shit despite having more power than required.

Is the convenience worth paying way more than the individual price of the components in the box ? For me it was but it may be different for you. I see tons of people falling for the gaming laptop meme and they don't even travel, they use it in their room.
>>
>>381072351
Its alright if you travel, but if you use it as your main system. oh boy oh boy.
>>
Anything that's marketed as a gaming laptop is bullshit, but laptops can be okay for gaming if it suits your needs.

I work a lot of nights, bringing my laptop in means I can just use that time to play pretty much any game I want. Also my apartment is small, and I dont really have room for a big rig.

The most recent asus rog laptops seem to have decent cooling. A sperate fan for cpu and gpu keep things reasonable. Overheating was a dealbreaker for me but since im moving around a lot and i need something new to game on i might go for it this time.

This. They're for people who go places.

If you're just sitting at home and changing places by moving to another apartment in the same country every few years, of fucking course you get a tabletop and call it a day. There's literally no reason for you to get a laptop. On the other hand, if you're, say, a fucking professor that has conferences to attend to and who's juggling universities around the year, you're going to want to consider a laptop or else you're not going to have a computer with you on your travels.

It is, but literally no one calls it that.

Like not once has anyone called a PC a "stationary" and I work in the fucking IT department of my university. There's no reason to specify it in any real life context because everyone automatically assumes you're talking about one when talking about PCs. Why? Because you always specify you're talking about a laptop when you're talking about one, and thus the assumption is that unless you specified it to be a laptop, it's a stationary.

I had one normal HP laptop that had a good GPU back then and the biggest screen. It wasn't marketed as a "gaming" laptop, and the price was good.

I played a lot on it, and it was pretty good. But back then, the games weren't nowhere as demanding as today.

Two years ago, I went to a Dota 2 tournament in Germany, and you had a lot of stands with the best gaming laptops available, but when I played the games, it ran like shit. There was ALWAYS some stuttering and the heat was unbelievable.

Gaming laptops are really a meme nowadays. There's just not enough cooling to run a top tier GPU for a long time.

Tell me anon.
Tell me why you need 60fps 1440p while you're away from home.
If you're out of the house, you're out for a reason.
Are you playing video games at work?
Are you whipping out your portable, over-heating brick on your daily commute?
Taking a shit in a public toilet and decide you want to play some fucking Overwatch?
I want you to fucking tell me why you're willing to invest three times as much money for the same experience, but portable.

Laptops are useful for free times at university or work.
Also for taking them with you when you travel. I'm not gonna fucking bring my desktop with me when I travel to visit family.

Yes, you can. If you bring a charger with you like anyone without shit for brains would do.
Good luck bringing your desktop with you to play in hotels or offices. Specially if you travel a lot due to your work.

They're only decent if you travel a lot for work or something similar.

>>
>>381088684
Fine, free time, it's valid.
But why does it need to be high-end? You can't have THAT much free time, to the point where the investment is worth it. I can see where you're coming from with visiting your family, but with other daily activities I can't see having enough free time to become fully immersed in a gaming experience, to the point where you'd want such high end graphics.
Shitty lenovos can do a lot more than you think they can.

I bought the Lenovo y520 Legion with an i5 and 1050ti for 700$ new. So far Ive had no problems emulating or running current gen games in high settings and running them at 60fps. It's not even the money that's the problem, or even the performance. it's a gigantic 17" laptop that dry roasts my penis when i play games on it, it has to be plugged in all the time and even when running an external monitor you have to have the lid open because otherwise the BIOS shuts off the nvidia graphics card and reverts back to the intel onboard.

It replaced a gaming PC i built ages ago. Lesson learned eh.

Well honestly now that Gaming laptops have ACTUAL desktop gpu's in them now. They're sort of worth it. I had gotten a gaming laptop as a gift from my grandparents 4YEARS ago. Now that shit is super obsolete, but that's just how technology progresses. It was an Asus ROG G74SX. Pic related
Desktops are still godlike though. You can still build a desktop for cheaper, replace parts, have more space, and way more customizable.
I still love my Grandparents for the laptop. I was very surpised.

>>
>>381072351
They're definitely not suitable for most people, but they aren't entirely without merit. A gaming laptop is a desktop replacement. It is not something to lug around on the go. It's compact enough to pack up when changing locations or to store when it's not in use. You set it up on a desk, almost always hooked up to a power source. It's ideal for someone who travels regularly, for whom a traditional desktop PC would be way too cumbersome to travel with. It's not for casually using in whichever room of the house you feel like lounging in, or carrying with you for your daily routine. It's way too cumbersome for that.
>>
>>381097248
Yeah that's what's put me off it probably the most. Reversing your own mistakes seems really tedious. And I'm an idiot, so it'll take even longer.

I have a T430 and couldn't be happier. Screen is a bit dim but most games I play are obscure indie titles so I don't mind.

I'd say the optimal gaming combo would be 3DS + T430 + PS3, both consoles modded of course. Add Wii U to that if you didn't have Wii.

>30 min battery life

maybe 2x as expensive as modern parts after slight depreciation, but depends which brand you go with at that point.
>>381072580
>>
>>381072351
Yes they are.

Gaming laptop means you'll spend a minimum of 50% to 300% more compared to a desktop with the same specs

You will be lucky if it survived for more than 2-3 years because of high heat issues

Want to sell your somewhat old one? You'll be lucky if you get 50% of what you paid for it.

One broken part means high cost of repair

Monitors are small as fuck

Keyboards are cramped as fuck

If you want to game on a laptop, just by skylake igpu ones. You can experience console-like gaming experience on them.

I have a laptop I game on but I don't know if I'd consider it a "gaming laptop", it just has a mobile GPU on it. It's good enough to run 6th and 7th gen games and PC exclusives well and that's all I really need anyways, I have that PS4 for new games.

>>
Depends on how old you are.

>$200 laptop during college
>can't run anything older than 2004
>stuck playing Dwarf Fortress and MountainBlade
>buy gaming PC after college
>play all the cool games for 20 minutes
>eventually get back to playing DF now with less FPS death
Desktops can be stupid investments too. If you need a laptop don't buy a "gayming" one. Buy a good one.
>>
>>381072351
Okay, so here is my opinion from someone who games on a laptop for years and finally built a tower of power a year back or so. If they have fancy lights and shit and are overpriced because of that, maybe. But, I miss the fuck out of having a "gaming" laptop when I just want portability but want to play the same games. Hauling a tower around is a pain in the ass. (Also my MSI laptop got stolen so thats why I just have my tower and a couple old HP laptops I dont use because they dont work that well)

tldr probably, but they are also awesome and I miss playing games on a laptop sometimes. Especially when going places or LAN parties, which are rare now but weve had a few in the last couple years.

Gaymen laptops are a total meme.
Where it's at are 800-1200 freedom unit laptops. Best bet are the actually quadcore i5s with 1050/1060s. You get decent termals, decent battery life, decent carrying weight and decent budget, if you don't have a desktop but want to game.

If you do have a desktop and only need a laptop for normalfaggotry, those i3/i5 Acers with Iris graphics or any >x30M Nvidia cards are sufficient.

If only AMD weren't total cunts with their delays and released the Raven Ridge laptops already.

Maybe 10 years ago they were but since Kepler and Haswell they are now viable and even better now with Pascal (Nvidia) and Kaby Lake (Intel).

Just avoid AMD laptops because those still get hot as shit. Not sure about Zen tho but all their previous architectures have always been way behind Intel's and Nvidia's when it comes to transistor size.

Did you even pay attention when he did it? I built one the other day for my friend who hasn't even used a fucking computer in almost a decade, he literally asked me "should I get one of the mouse's with the laser or the ball on it?"

I don't think he actually knows how it is done if he's asking such questions. Might be a bit overconfident. Keep an eye on him still.
>>
>>381108765
Well that's what I mean. He was practically computer illiterate, like an old man when we started, but by the end he realized that the process of actually building one is really easy. Most people just get nervous when they see all the fragile looking parts but in reality they're all pretty sturdy. I did tell him that if he has any issues with the finished product to call me before he fucks anything up.
