When people say "Game of the Year" who are they referring to? according to who? some magazine? metacritic? there's some sort of agency similar to the oscars who defines which game gets game of the year?

botw is one of the least unique games i've ever played, it's something that i feel should've been made a long time ago but the technology either wasn't there yet or everyone was trying too hard to make their games "special" so they ruined them with gimmicks instead of nailing the fundamentals like nintendo did.

don't get me wrong, i'm not railing on it or anything, but it is such an incredibly straightforward and logical effort that uses a compilation of tried and true game mechanics that have already been polished to a sheen in other places. it stands out solely thanks to how pedestrian it is because we live in an era where trash like horizon gets sales because whoa post apocalypse robot dinosaurs? sign me the FUCK up haven't seen that before so i don't care if the actual gameplay and writing are garbage.

name ONE thing that's unique about it. the setting, the enemies, the combat, the story, etc. everything is so standard, there is nothing whatsoever that is contrived which leaves a lot of space for them to perfect what is there.

it's pretty great in general and a breath of fresh air from what i've grown used to in gaming but i'd never say a game like that is my goty.

DLC for online pvp arena for 1v1, 2v2, 3-4 FFA. Allows large arenas and horseback combat

The game is amazing for the sheer amount of shit you can do

adding things like parry and counter attacks for combat was great too; reflecting guardian lasers in Hyrule castle makes you feel like a champ

I'm not a fan of open world games in general. BotW did make exploring more fun than usual with the climbing and paraglider. It still had a lot of problems I have with open world games. Mainly huge areas full of nothing and fetch quests, but I still think it's one of the better open world games I've played, as far as traversing the open world goes. I have other issues with it that aren't related to that though

I haven't even played it yet but Mario Odyssey seems to be giving everything 3D Mario fans have been asking for, meanwhile Botw dropped the ball in terms of dungeons and enemy variety, among other things. As much as I love Botw, Mario is doing everything right so far.

The story is much more than "adults r bad", and I don't get why the high school setting/age would be a problem at all, but whatever. The game is very story heavy, much more than the past releases, but the gameplay is incredibly solid and addictive. If you have "weeb elements" then no, you probably won't like it though

Yeah it made traversing the world itself fun, I can't count the amount of times I got sidetracked from doing what I was planning on because I wanted to go somewhere else and never did it feel tedious, in fact planning out how you approach things in the game was almost a puzzle in it of itself.
The first ten hours of this game were the best I've experienced in a video game in a long time.
