Really makes me think, looking at a person who played 3-4 first and went to 5, as someone who played 5 first and then 3.
I liked the fact that the P3 cast reach conclusions on their own, and even evolve their persona without the protagonist having to help them out. I feel like they are established characters on their own without the MC having to do anything at first, and the MC's involvement helps them reach their own conclusions. Of course, the P5 cast are unique and established by themselves, by I feel like there wasn't enough independence in the P5 cast. I saw inklings of it pre-Kaneshiro but once Makoto enters the fray it was all over. They lost all train of thought.
The mistake P3 did however, was not giving a link to the boys. The Boys could still have been as independent as they were, but a little bit of exposition about them would have helped out the few gaps in the early months where it felt like nothing was really happening. The side characters initially felt like normal high schoolers to me, so their role was well done, and then became more fleshed out as you witnessed the problems they had. The ideas behind it were good, but the execution was somewhat lacking.
P5 definitely improved on a lot of things, but a little independence in the cast and a mind of their own would make the cast better, in my opinion.

Honestly the distance that the p3 cast had with each other is really refreshing. Even at the end of the game the only two I would consider close are mitsuru and yukari. Everyone else just puts up with each other since they're the only ones who can do anything about the dark hour, and thats sorta neat in a genre thats full of party members being the best of friends and saving the world together

Nah, there were a lot of moments late game where the entire cast bonds and develop due to each other. Fuuka's resolve helps spur Junpei, same for Akihiko and Ken. After Mitsuru's dad died,
Akihiko is the most depressed since he doesn't know how to cheer her up. A lot of random nights at the dorm have some party members sitting together in their own conversion that you can listen in on as well.

They're a group mostly brought together by convenience, but you can steadily see all of them grow closer later on in the game, especially since they almost all take part in each other's development.

The cat is pretty useless honestly, he's literally only good at two points of the game. In the early game(first two Palaces) he can be the designated healer, also downing enemies weak to Gun due to him having higher ammo than Joker/Ryuji and not missing as much as Ann. His SP pool is fairly high and he has access to Wind skills, which require low SP cost so he can mainly focus on healing with Dia and Media. Also has access to ailment healing like Me Patra so this is especially good and Lucky Punch to down enemies who aren't weak to anything such as Regents or simply getting a Crit off, it having a low HP cost is great to boot.

The second time he's useful is during the Twin's Boss fight, but this is debatable. On one hand he has access to Salvation, which can heal HP to full and heal all non-special ailments, Masakunda which can debuff both of their agility/evasion so they are more susceptible to hits and miss more often which can often be life saving or forcing them to use a turn to Dekunda, double boosted(75%) Wind skills on top of having a high magic stat allows him to do massive damage to both of them at once with Magarudyne and finally having Evade Elec. allows him to dodge Electric skills and not get shocked.

But that's where the good parts end.

Unfortunately these are the only two points in the game where the black masked mascot is useful. You see, Morgana suffers from multiple problems that the other party members don't have, one of which, and the the most important one being of course, his stats.

He has the lowest HP of the PT. His HP is only higher than Futaba's, the support character who doesn't even fight. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, if he had something else to bring to the table. His stats are, in order from highest to lowest, MA, AGI, LUC, STR and finally END. His SP is the highest of the party with his HP being the lowest. So basically this tells us that he's a hard hitting magic user who can heal, but can't take a hit. This would be fine, if it wasn't for the fact that Wind is one of the more commonly resisted skills in the game. If Morgana doesn't kill or do reasonable damage to the enemies during his turn, he'll end up being dead weight. So the turns he can't do damage, he's sitting in the corner healing your allies, basically being a heal bot.

Except he can't even do that right, because he'll be getting killed by a shadow that has any type of reasonable damage, therefore making his high SP completely useless because he'll be fucking dead before he gets a chance to actually use it.

Every party member you get past him is infinitely more useful.
>Ryuji has Elec skills and Shock ailments, massive Physical damage capabilities. Also learns Tarukaja/Matarukaja for buffing your entire party.

>Makoto has Nuke which is usually unresisted and is amplified when enemies are afflicted by Shock/Burn/Freeze(Ryuji/Ann/Yusuke, no Morgana here folks!), Healing magic on top of having good HP/END so that she can take a hit and Rakukaja/Marakukaja so that she can make everyone's defenses stronger. Did I mention she learns some a physical skill that inflicts dizzy and Energy Shower which heals ailments that Morgana doesn't cover?

Even in my fifth playthrough of FF7 where I tried to go all out and pick the most unconventional set-ups, I could not find any reason whatsoever to use this pile of dung. His dex, str, and vit are all abysmal, so he's clearly not a physical attacker or tank of any kind. All of his equipment lends to him fishing for crits with Lucky (and later Miracle) Punch, you don't even really need a designated healer character outside of boss battles until the end game. He gets made redundant by Makoto eventually but not until said endgame where Makoto gets all of her useful healing skills, with Makoto herself only being useful before then against enemies weak to Nuke.

You can't write the character off as "just" being good for fishing crits either, when crits fucking break this game.

I'd go as far as to say that, Joker aside, the only objectively useful party members are Ryuji for his stupidly high str damage and Ann for her stupidly high mag damage. The remaining party member can be any old filler, Joker is both a better healer and damage dealer than Morgana, Yusuke, Makoto and Haru anyway.

It's not bs because you don't need a preset healer for most of the game. When you do, Joker does it better (and it's not wasting Joker because there are a surplus of high powered attackers in the game already, whereas there are not a surplus of healers. Offense-orientated Joker is more overkill than it is a necessity even on the higher difficulties) The cat and the autist are only good for healing if you don't want Joker to do that + landing critical hits which Morgana does more often even with Makoto having her high crit weapon equipped, both of their damage outputs are bottom tier outside of that. Makoto is tankier than Morgana but still not sturdy enough to the point where you don't have to heal up every other turn against strong enemies, which applies to Morgana too anyway.

Makoto's better in all the ways that don't actually matter, essentially. Morgana does one specific thing better but it's the only niche the character needs.

All of that is very true. The problem is that crits don't work in boss fights, so Morgana's big advantage goes out the window there, along with most of Yusuke's benefits. Thankfully, the benefits of the Star and Moon confidants mean that you don't need to restrict yourself to a set party for the whole game, and Joker's versatility means you can just pick skills to work around the gaps in your party.

She's given a varied assortment of skills to pick from and barely anything comes off as a straight upgrade to a previously learned skill, which means you have to pick what you want her to specialize in while sacrificing some other things she has.
