Supposedly he took the funds that Sega gave him for the Aliens game, and instead of using said funds on said game, he put most of their money into Borderlands 2.
>>
>>381058829
Gearbox funneled funds from Colonial Marines to fund the development of Borderlands 2 then farmed out the development of CM to the lowest bidder.
>>
>>381058706
SEGA paid them to make Aliens: Colonial Marines. If I'm not mistaken, they made the multiplayer component and then outsourced the single player campaign to a nobody company for cents on the dollar. It was a disaster. Duke Nukem Forever didn't turn out so well either and their own games, Borderlands and Battleborn, are pretty shitty too. They're not a good company and are not to be trusted.
>>
>>381058934
Was there an agreement between Sega and Gearbox that the money should be only spend on the Alien game? Or Sega just threw money at Gearbox?

>>
>>381059021

Actually, the money SEGA gave to Gearbox to produce Colonial Marines back in 2006 was used to fund the development for Borderlands lmao, they kept bullshitting how there were technical difficulties and they were working on it.

Then, they developed Borderlands 2. At this point, they only think they developed for Colonial Marines was a technical demo and a multi-player demo.

At this point, it was coming up to 2012 and 6 years into development. SEGA threated legal action, Gearbox promised they were on it but they had actually done nothing so they just outsourced multiple aspects of the game to studios all over.

The single-player and multi-player were done by multiple studios, and it was a shit show.

They really fucked SEGA over.

Pre-Sequel was a huge disappointment in itself, zero real marketing can tell they swept it under and shipped with an enormous amount of bullshit that didn't get fixed until 6 months later.
Speaks for itself that every after Borderlands 2 that Gearbox did is pretty much cash grab trash. Given both Battleborn and Borderlands Pre Sequel have under 500 players each.
Meanwhile both Borderlands 1 and 2 have around 5 to 8k players actively.

If Sega successfully sued Gearbox for it that's another story however.

You're missing the point. It was Gearbox that ruined Aliens: Colonial Marines (and Duke Nukem Forever), not SEGA. OP's pic suggests there might be a dark future ahead of us where Gearbox gets to collaborate with IO on next Hitman.

I hope this will be the new Bitchford thing: asking developers on Twitter if they want to work together, only to be completely ignored

>>
>>381062615
It's published by Sega though?

It's Sega's job to make sure the developers deliver the game correctly and on time, I see what you're saying how's gearbox fucked Sega around, but at the end of the day it was Sega's responsibility to its shareholders to prevent/stop/avoid that, and yet they didn't, got fucked by rent seeking developers, and yet still released a sub-par product.

Gearbox may have fucked Aliens up, but the game was Sega's responsibility and it's just as much their fault - if Sega was actually fully involved and invested in making a great game (re: if they gave a fuck) the shit Gearbox did on Sega's dime wouldn't have been possible.
>>
Everyone needs to twitter spam IO now about how Gearbox is shit. The position their in right now, they might actually accept the offer.
>>
I don't know, should we also blame them for buying the Homeworld franchise and hire the original creators to make a new game?

>>
>>381062909

Gearbox has been shit for some time, so hard in fact that they even managed to ruin a good franchise they themselves made:

https://youtu.be/IK2s982TzxQ

Brothers In Arms was a decent squad-based shooter with actually good cover mechanics to them. But after Borderlands 2 they decided to "Badass it up". Feedback on the trailer alone was so bad the whole thing was canceled immediatly.

And of course it fucking failed, Brothers in Arms games were played by a playerbase who also liked military shooters and other squad-based shooter games, they liked the mix of arcadey shooter with realism in it. They weren't the same audience who played and liked Borderlands.
>>
>>381061384

>>
>>381062909

>>
>>381063367
I don't think Randy quite understands that the Borderlands world is it's own thing and doesn't need to mesh elsewhere. He's trying to hard to make the image that is Borderlands the image of gearbox overall, because to be frank it is their most successful game.
>>
>>381063074

>Gearbox may have fucked Aliens up, but the game was Sega's responsibility and it's just as much their fault

Theres only so much responsibility publishers have, they can't control the quality of the product all by themselves, thats why they have someone to make the game FOR them in the first place.

Publishers usually manage to ruin games by executive meddling like demanding stupid shit put on the game or fucking with the budget and contract itself, but Sega did nothing like that with Aliens: Colonial Marines. Aliens was a fuckup of Gearbox and Gearbox alone.
>>
>>381063367
This looks like a fake video game trailer you'd see in a movie or something. Like in Tropic Thunder where you have the trailers for the fake movies within the movie, this would literally be one of those trailers. That's how generic and farcical it is. What an abomination.
>>
>>381063565
If stories stand true to it, Sega knew full well Gearbox wasn't actually doing the work given the final product was shown off in some studio in Texas. Sega wasn't about to be responsible for the game even though they funded it. Seems fucking retarded to me that Sega would do that to begin with.

Its the best Arpg-FPS hybrid out there, even when counting Destiny. Kill-time on common enemies is still short enough for it to feel like a shooter. Borderlands 2 started suffering because of the Burch family but was not ruined by them because the main writer was still someone else.

After Borderlands 2 developers inside Gearbox started leaving one by one and Gear started having a habit of commissioning the development of their games to other smaller companies. This is the reason why Borderlands: Pre-Sequel and Aliens: Colonial Marines both suck ass. Well, Pre-Sequel also sucks thanks to Anthony Burch getting full rein of the storywriting, so you literally couldn't ignore or escape all the shitty internet memes and references to feminism anymore.
>>
>>381063565
So what you're saying is Sega gave them the money to develop the game, but did nothing of the "usual" publisher things to make sure development was on track, deadlines were being met, goals were being pushed, etc.?

So Sega did nothing that a publisher "usually" would to make sure the development of their product was going as-planned, and yet it was entirely Gearboxes fault?

Business are profit seeking entities, Gearbox is trying to seek a profit through its own goals, as is Sega. If Sega employed Gearbox, and then gave Gearbox absolute freedom and did none of the rings publishers "usually" do then of course Gearbox used that funding to pursue their own goals - and any non-retarded person would assume this.

It's Sega's own fault for their shitty business practice, and apparent complete apathy towards the usual development process and how Aliens turned out.
>>
>>381064051

>>
>>381064483
No, and I'm only learning about this one now, in this thread.

But it's honestly just really poor business practice on Sega's part - have they not sued Gearbox to recover some costs? Or is it just that their contract was incomplete, and Gearbox was able to do what they did yet still remain within the terms of the contract?

Either way, from a business point of view, it's on Sega. Buyer beware.
>>

>>
>>381064642

You forgot to add "badass" in it.
>>
>>381064461
It's not that there was no legal requirement so much as the law is really fucking stupid. As long as there was any form of effort being made, Gearbox could reasonably deny ill intent. The law basically cannot discern fraud vs incompetency. If Sega tried to sue Gearbox for funneling money into other projects, all Gearbox had to do was claim incompetency, which is a fucking ironclad defense for them because even their serious projects are terrible, Sega would be shit out of luck. This is even explicitly what happened after Colonial Marines came out and there was a class action lawsuit against Gearbox for false advertising and the case was thrown out because "any reasonable expecting customer knows that demos and trailers are misleading anyways".

The biggest bit of wrongdoing you could point at Sega was not being more strict with their milestones and such, but they gave the project to Gearbox thinking that if you gave them creative freedom you'd get another Borderlands out of it, which is foolish because not even Gearbox knows how to get another Borderlands again.
>>
>>381064882
Sega did sue Gearbox unsuccessfully.
Basically it boiled down to Sega should have done it's fucking job as a publishing company. What can you expect from a company that sold it's soul to the Yakuza for that Pachinko money. You would expect them to protect their assets better, but obviously that's not the case.
>>
>>381064618
Pre-Sequel got outsourced becauseRandy wanted to work on "other projects".

>>
>>381064934
Okay now I'm understanding more fully. So there was definitely an element of goodwill that went towards Gearbox getting the contract in the first place.

Sega still should have done a better job monitoring development, but now I can see how you're pissed at Gearbox for doing a 'good enough' job, instead of the best job they could have, for an IP you care about.

Fuck Gearbox then, and Sega get your head out of your ass.
>>
>>381064934
Borderlands 1 and 2 had great advertising. 2 especially building off the hype of the loot from the first game. 1 had all solid dlc and 2 had some of the most fan pandered dlc which made it great in itself. People wanted more Tiny Tina, Torgue and Hammerlock along with got on with pirates somehow. I think this overall success went to their heads and effectively made them lazy fucks sadly.

The reason it's so bad is because Gearbox took the money and devtime meant to be used to develop that game and spent it on Borderlands 2 instead. Money and devtime which was being backed by Sega.

Actually you know what this succinctly explains it right here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega#Continued_expansion_and_acquisitions_.282005.E2.80.932013.29

From 2005 to 2013 Sega had begun trying everything they could to get a bigger marketshare in the west so they started buying up a bunch of western properties and teams and licensing projects out to western studios hoping that they would become big successes in the west and make Sega a bigger name.

All of this shit did terribly and there were massive layoffs and Sega had to undergo a huge restructuring, leading to 2015 where Haruki Satomi took over as CEO and things have been more structured and focused on the things that Sega has done well previously. I was mostly pulling those years out of my ass but I hit it spot on.

I mean look at TF2, nothing in terms of visuals and sound is overused or neglected, clearly defined class roles with little to no overlap yet highly versatile and able to fit several playstyles, and best of all it strikes a good balance between teamplay requirement and individual-led victory.

Problem with Hellgate:London is its barely an FPS. Borderlands had the right idea of getting the FPS-feel to the guns, plus the gun generator had as simple but important FPS-related differences to them like different recoils, clips, shooting speeds, different scopes, ammo clip sizes and so on. Two White Jacobs shotguns can still feel wildly different from each other when shooting them. Enemies still died relatively fast so the game still felt like an FPS. Bullet-sponginess only started becoming a problem in Borderlands games new game plus or some of the later stages.

Biggest problem with both Borderlands games was the Arpg elements otherwise are kinda crap. The gun-generator makes for a lot of fun loot but skills in the game are kinda shit. So when a new loot-based shooter comes out, it should just take the good ideas of Borderlands (short kill-time, gun-generator) and add in some actual Arpg skill system to it.

That era of Gearbox was just doing wetworks. Half-Life, Tony Hawk, Halo, 007, Counter-Strike (lol). They made Borderlands as means to have something to call their own, because Brothers in Arms wasn't exactly a hot property. Everything after Borderlands 1 was basically their JUST era.

>>
>>381068017

Well if they want to be the next best Arpg-shooter, then they pretty much have to. Destiny's biggest problem is the loot is kinda boring and enemies are way too bullet-spongy.

Because part of the appeal of Arpgs is searching for that loot in the first place. And if the loot is always the same in every playthrough, then its not as fun. Farming for that epic unique is part of the appeal of Arpgs, if you get it too easily (like D3 Auction House bullshit), then theres no point finding loot and the game loses its purpose.
>>
>>381069691
Borderlands took it to a nice level, create a bunch of manufacturer that have unique traits then build around restrictions of what can't occur.

I just find it baffling how bad Battleborn ended up being.

Gearbox have a successful FPS franchise with Borderlands, and for some reason didn't make Battleborn part of that world or advertise it as such. The BEST thing you can do with a new IP if your organization already have successful ones is link them together to make people interested.

Look at Volition's Agents of Mayhem. It's practically a new IP, but since they aren't total idiots the game is set in the Saints Row universe and you can play as Johnny Gat, a beloved character in that universe. They knew the game wouldn't sell all too well without the setting.

Gearbox then had the fucking great idea to release the game on the SAME DAY that Overwatch, Battleborn's main competitor, started its open beta. I still cannot believe they actually did that. Could they not have cut out a few characters and released the game earlier? The game probably would've made most of its money back by basically being a warm-up for Overwatch for people who couldn't play it at that point, but no. Release it when the entire world are playing a much better game.

I have absolutely no business experience and I'm still pretty sure I'd be a better CEO than Randy. What an idiot.
>>
>>381067525
I always get confused as well. TF2 is a class based shooter in the purest of terms. Each class has a distinct role or at least something that one class can do that another can't. Most of these "class shooters" (I just call them character shooters) have different characters to fill the same basic role just with slight tweaks everywhere and with so many "classes", balancing is a nightmare compared to 9 distinct classes with their own specialites.

I wouldn't be that hard on Randy regarding the OW part. He had a project already going, Blizzard decided to turn Titan into an fps, and his fucking character designer together with Metzen meshed a stupidly appealing rooster to hit everyone's depraved and power fantasies.

Afaik BB didn't do so bad in consoles, it tried too hard to be unique, but it ended up being a shitty moba spinoff with some weird campaign and some cringy characters. I think this is comparable to rolling 1 twice in a row during a D&D game, they invested too much, and expected things to work without curating them enough with a focus group, and thought they had the money in their pocket just because they already had done a very successful FPS before.

BB is indeed a failure, but I think at some point they had the potential to make a decent game, but they went too far, lost focus of their goals, and ended up shipping a half assed game that no one likes, the difference is usually this kind of garbage games are shipped with way less content and characters, but they commited to it naively.

But you're right about the Borderland characters on BB, it worked great for HoTs, I don't see why it wouldn't work for BB at least a bit.

If you're wondering why they bottle up one playstyle in a class and release them en masse compared to versatile TF2 classes, it's simply because... it's easier. And they can generate more hype when they release a new class down the road instead of keeping 9-ish classes viable against each other.

To folks talking about Sega ITT:

As someone who is a huge Sega fan, and follows the company pretty hardcore, I will say that Sega DID fuck up themselves by not doing the proper oversight that a publisher should, but they did at least sort of have a reason.

All the people in charge of CM were basically fired in everything but name at that point. Sega had intended to buy a publisher and essentially replace Sega of America with them. It ended up being Atlus USA. The huge lay offs that had gone on between 2010 and 2014 were all waves of getting rid of parts of Sega of America, leaving essentially a skeleton crew behind from 2012 on. They started rehiring and now Sega of America is basically new people. But at the time, the two big projects that they were in charge of overseeing was Sonic Boom and Aliens: CM. It's a small wonder that those games turned out to be shit.

I put part of the fault on Sega, because maybe it's not a good idea to make it very clear that your employees have no future at your company, and then give them a ton of responsibility.

No, screw you. Only one person is responsible for what Duke Nukem became and that's George Broussard. I will literally fight you if you try to take credit away from that cunt and his constant fucking up. 1998 demo of DNF could have been a released game, 2001 looked great, the others had potential. Then what did we get? We got bullshit where it was revealed that people who worked at 3D Realms for 2-3 years did nothing but work on single fucking maps, changing it all the time to suit Broussard and his constant changing tastes. Always wanting the game to be like what he just played. At one point the game was a CoD clone, all because George liked MW2. That fat fuck collected pogs, played video games constantly, took his sports cars to the track and raced against id (who had actually released games) did everything but finish a fucking game and turned his company into a laughing stock and made his sole franchise into a meme that only Gabe Newell has managed to surpass with HL3.

Don't you ever dare try to push the blame of Duke Nukem on anyone else you cunt. Fuck you, George. I will never not be salty about what you did to what was a childhood defining series.

He's done a few things that could be called such. Tweeting about the Battleborn porn subreddit, for one. Telling tales about winning the company name from Gabe Newell in a poker game, for another.

This can't be fucking real how is this really

I would just like to take a moment to remind you, yes YOU READING THIS MESSAGE, that you are not Anthony Burch.

No, Andrew Dobson, you are not Anthony Burch.

No, Tim Buckley, you are not Anthony Burch.

And cheer up, Anthony. At least you aren't CWC.
>>
Every time I feel like killing myself I remember Burch exists and I realize that life isn't that bad for me.

Do you see the actual numbers though.

~350

Three hundred and fifty people out of literal millions.

Insanity

Wow guys, you are seriously acting like a bunch of jerks right now. You don't like jerks, do you? Why would you let yourself act like one? Think about it.

Enjoy your new failed marriage, Burch. Why don't you just take her name?
>>
>>381090295

Whoever made that should've put 079 or G instead. Stardust Memories is one of the most polarizing Gundam entries there.

I don't know who this Burch fellow is, but he sounds like a real badass guy if he's manly enough to give his wife the freedom from their marriage she deserves.

Pitchford is a crook and a mythomaniac.
