You know what? Let's forget about how shitty the graphics are, or the character designs, or the game itself clearly being a kickstarter scam. Know what really gets me? How the fuck is it in 2017 this style of combat is acceptable? It plays like fucking sotn for fuck sakes! The enemies barely have any attacks and die in like one hit. This was understandable when they worked with limited sprites, but there's no excuse with 3d modeling now.

It does actually, back then they had barely any budget and were working with sprites, which are much harder to animate, so with those games easily having 100 enemies or more, it made sense they'd only have one attack or two and barely any animations. 3d modeling makes that way easier, yet the main character has no combos or animation variations on attacks, and the enemies are the same as they always were, fodder with maybe 1 or 2 attacks that just slowly and mindlessly walk around the halls. Its fucking garbage.

It's praised due to the great spritework, music, and atmosphere/aesthetic. The gameplay sucked, mainly because the game was piss easy. Alucard moved stupidly fast and fluidly and had more attacks, while the enemies were all dumb, slow things that had maybe 2 attacks at most. In order to even have challenge you had to do no item runs, otherwise the game was a fucking joke.

There would need to be two versions because Classicvania and Metroidvania are completely different beasts appealing to different people. I've tried for years to get into Classicvania and I just can't since I dislike the stiff movement and trial and error, but have loved every Metroidvania because I like the exploration and item changing aspects.

Metroid doesn't really have that because even Prime at its core is the exact same as the other games, it's just in a different perspective.

Now, if you're not a fan of pinball then this isn't going to change your mind but this is one of the better pinball games out there. it's primarily the exploration and discovering new areas, new enemies, new weapons and armor, new secrets and so on that makes you keep going. this is true for most metroidvanias.

as for the combat, again, the fun wasn't in executing sick DmC combos, but experimenting with each new weapon to see what it's gimmick was, if it's attack animation was different, or if it had some sort of synergy with some other gear like the shield rod, or some kind of unique special attack. this is why you had a high number of weapons to find and collect from drops. same goes for the likes of enemy souls in aria and so on. sure, adding some combo system or more moves in general to combat, and putting weapons in classes by weight or so on can be a nice bonus and add variety but it's just that, a bonus and as long as you have the basis i explained earlier it should be good.

difficulty-wise, i honestly don't see many people complaining about it. in fact i think they like how ridiculously OP you can become with certain combinations. if you want hard go play ghosts and goblins/ghouls (there's even a psp remake) and get your shit wrecked every 5 minutes. sometimes people just want to get a cool-ass sword and mow down enemies as they explore a big castle full of secrets, or they just want to soul steal a full room to death. if you really difficulty just make a hard mode in which enemies deal double damage or something
