Fair enough, I just wish there was some better direction and the different stories are clearly defined from each other. And it does seem like its hedding in that way what with 'classic Sonic' apparently being from another dimension. This could be SEGAs attempt at organizing from that point forward. And that's common, Zelda has its branching timelines and Transformers has its multiverse and the single villain that's common to all of the transformers universes.

Also the addition of a focused narrative isn't going to make Sonic "legitimately good". It wasn't present at the franchise's start, and it doesn't need to be present now. All there needs to be is good music, good level design, and good gameplay, and then Sonic is back on the map.

OP here, I want to clarify that there being no continuity is fine (except for explicit sequels), nor do i feel like any narrative absolutely needs to be complex or simple. I just want the franchise to be a bit more organized in regards to what is standalone and what is sequel to what. And maybe some more common groundwork.

The Genesis games and Mania are a perfect example of a good way to do it. Now I wouldn't object to a comic book tie in to these games either.

Get new blood that isn't tainted and lock them in a room with disassembled copies of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. Make them recreate it down to the finest details in a week.

Then let them make a new game.

Just make a damn adventure game, it doesn't have to be Adventure 3 but just use an different formula instead of the same one over and over.

Step 2: Spend the time to make entirely new engines for both the 2D and 3D games on the level of Mario Galaxy. An engine they can use for the next decade.
Step 3: Focus on speed and momentum and not precision platforming. Sonic Advance 2 had the right idea, they just need to increase the resolution (range of view). For 3D games, fix the camera and remove the lock system. Have it be true free movement.
Step 4: No more story.
Step 5: Stop trying to be 'edgy' and embrace the general market. The game features kemono characters. Use that to your advantage and stop trying to make the characters act like ditzy anime teenagers.

I think the biggest problem Sonic has is brand identity, or rather, lacking thereof. Point is- you have a franchise so big and bloated that it has no idea what it wants to be anymore. Boom and Forces are proof of that.

Boom exists as an off-brand with sharper character designs and lush worldbuilding potential. Why the higher-ups decided it would be a good idea to sell it as a Saturday morning slapstick cartoon is anyone's guess.

Forces is more or less Generations with an OC creator slapped on it. The game looks like it was cobbled together from recycled assets, but lacks the atmosphere and visuals Sonic games are famous for.

Mania looks to be the saving grace for anything Sonic, as far as 2017 is concerned. Funny how fans end up creating a better Sonic than SEGA does.
