Zero Mission is a great starting point. Has all the basics of Metroid but guides you through it without holding your hand. Super is probably the quintessential Metroid. You owe it to yourself to give it a shot. Fusion is okay. It's very on rails though. Prime is the Metroid formula in 3D and while differentis fantastic. Even if Prime3 is more on rails. AM2R hard as dicks. Play it once you feel comfortable with Metroid as a whole

Two important questions are whether you prefer 2D games or 3D games, and whether you care about playing a series in its chronological order or not.

2D and chronological order: Zero Mission > AM2R > Super Metroid > Metroid Fusion > Give Prime 1 a chance. If you like it, move on to Prime 2 and Prime 3. Leaving Prime for last is assuming you are not much into the kind of 3D "shooter" Prime is, but if you do like it enough, you can try to squeeze the trilogy somewhere in there. Prime 1 comes right after Zero Mission chronologically, but the Prime series is disconnected enough that it doesn't matter that you may play those out of order.

2D and not in chronological order: Super Metroid > Zero Mission > Fusion > AM2R > Again, give Prime 1 a chance, move on to Prime 2 and 3 if you like it. And again, you can squeeze the Prime trilogy anywhere you want in there if you feel like it.

3D: Prime 1 > Prime 2 > Prime 3, then look at the 2D games by what you prefer depending on what I said above.

Don't have a preference for 2D and 3D: It's a blind shot between starting with Super Metroid or Prime 1.

I think a lot of the issues surrounding M:OM could have been remedied if it was a prequel before ZM. Samus' fear and emotional instability could have been attributed to her youth. Her reliance on Adam and the Federation goonsquad could have been handwaved as her still being a Fed lackey and needing to follow orders. Her reaction to Ridley would be genuine, as it would be the first time she'd encountered him.

The storytelling would still be awful, but at least it wouldn't conflict with canon.

Probably. All autism aside, Samus Returns literally doesn't have anything in common with Other M besides maybe some of those flashy finisher animations.

Besides the Melee counter shit, it looks and sounds to be a Metroid-ass Metroid game with proper level design and health picks up, etc. If it was horribly linear, had dull Samus monologues all over the place, brought back the lame focus self-healing mechanic from OM and shit like that, then yeah there'd be a problem, but we haven't seen such things in SR.

For nearly the whole game, no. You can just bind some of the wagglan' actions to a certain key on your keyboard and it's all fine. The only time I really had a problem was the part where you have to synchronize the levers movements in the Pirate Homeworld with the GF Trooper/Gandrayda. I had to try that shit for nearly 20 minutes because at one point during the synchronization where you have to twist, doing a twist would also do a push immediately after for some reason. I managed to get through it but it was really infuriating trying to make it work.

Other M's problem was more then just its story as the gameplay was pretty terrible as well with forced waggle when a Nunchuck and Wiimote could have been used for a third person FPS type of Metroid instead of the poorly transitioned 2-D gameplay into 3-D.

I'd argue the problem with Other M's gameplay is that there were clearly two different directions and visions clashing against each other.

The thing is, Sakamoto originally wanted Other M just to be another one of his 2D Metroid games, albeit done in a 2.5D style. This is why he was mumbling on about how the game would be a "NES game made with modern technology", and why it plays with NES styled controls with the Wiimote on its side.

Problem is, Team Ninja sort of had other plans. They wanted to make the game into one of their 3D character action games like Ninja Gaiden, and they wanted to use the nunchuck and built the game around it. But Sakamoto denied them and insisted that the game had to control like a NES game. So in order to keep going with their character action game set up while appeasing Sakamoto, they attempted to make a compromise by presenting him with a prototype that had the game in 3D but still controlling with the Wiimote.

The Luminoth Interactions to me added a great feeling of sadness for their race since he was the last awake one, if he were to fall then all the rest were to be killed while in hibernation, him being alive tied well with all the death logs of the Luminoth seeing how long their struggle lasted as well as how near extinction they were, I also like how they're basically the distant cousins of the Chozo but they're lucky enough to have Samus visit their planet.

You're going to fight Sylux throughout the game, but all of a sudden there is a clone of Sylux, and the clone has been infected by phazon-x. You team up with Sylux at the end to fight the clone, Sylux is fataly wounded and takes off his helmet in a heart wrenching moment. it is revealed that Sylux is akshualy adam. he dies, then there is a cliffhangar for Prime 5: Other M 2.
