I hope it's basically a watered down and more managed PC. I want it to be a platform designed with no generations in mind, so that games can run on future versions of the console without needing to be updated to run better. Basically like how smartphone games work, but more managed by Amazon/Atari. I'd also want Amazon/Atari to mandate all games support both keyboard/mouse and controller. I wouldn't be upset if online wasn't free if it was at least included with Amazon Prime.

My guess is that the "console" is just a box for a game streaming service like PSNow, except for PC games. It makes a lot of sense that the partner would be Amazon in that case, they have the server infrastructure to run a game streaming service and the money to try to break into the market. Maybe that's what they mean when they say it's based on PC technology.

I doubt it's a bonafide console because they're releasing it mid generation. The PS4 and Xbox One are so established that it makes no sense for people to buy a new console with a much smaller game library. By the time an Atari box has a library comparable to what the PS4 and Xbox One have now, it'll be time for the PS5 and the next Xbox anyways. The only appeal an Atari box would have is that it's more powerful than the base PS4 and Xbox One, but the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X exist and have more games. This is either monumentally retarded, not coming out for several years, or not what we think it is.

First of all, we don't even have a date for the announcement of the goddamn thing. It could release in 2020 for all we know.
Second, there's nothing stopping them from starting a new generation themselves.
Third, generations are already a mess. The Wii U was somewhere in between 8th and 7th, and the Switch just released this year after a mid console PS4 refresh with a Bone refresh later in the year. Generations mean absolutely nothing at the moment and I don't think they will ever again.

Atari CAN pull this off. They just have to execute things perfectly

the rest of the 90's were corporate manufactured music. The internet killing the album meant that singles became the new cornerstone. everything rides on that single. that means that studios take less risks and play it safe, and micromanage every aspect of the industry to ensure maximum profit and as few losses as possible.

as such, there are no break out hits anymore. part of the reason is nobody really listens to the radio anymore. everyone just goes to youtube or itunes or facebook. So where a smalltime indie musician or group used to send their material to their local station to play, and a producer would hear it and pick them up, that doesnt happen anymore, and those musicians go to youtube instead, or bandcamp, and just basically eschew publishers and producers alltogether.

so what's left as "mainstream" music is the prepackaged corporate shit, and if you want actual good shit you have to dig deep for it.

Also, we've reached a point where we sort of subconsciously realize music is shit, so we glorify 80's music, since it was the last time there was anything new and experimental, and original.

tl;dr, internet killed music, along with the popularization of rap and hip hop.
