It's main use is to kill vampires and pillar men. That's what you need it for. It doesn't kill humans as shown when Old Joseph attacked that stand that was part of his body for a while.
Other than that it has other abilities like the hamon spell or whatever Kid Joseph did that pilot when he saved Speedwagon which didn't get much explanation.

Araki could have chosen fucking any plot device to bridge the relationship between Joseph and Josuke, so he had to have chosen an invisible baby for some reason. Not everything has to be wrapped in many layers of meaning.

Anyways, what loose ends are there with the baby? The mother was never found and Joseph adopted her. It's not like the baby was anything more than a background character.
