What went wrong?
The basic concept.
Man, I remember playing this game for hours on end. The problem was the admins in the game gave no shit at all about the community.
It was beyond pay to win. As people started to get older, the community fell apart too. More people went to private servers, or to other games. The admins needed to have better PR, but their incompetence cost them what could have been a really nice, feel good mmorpg.

Imagine a Cell Shaded MMORPG with detailed equipment, but full customisation due to materia / card slot system. Well, I fucking can't since they never made it a fucking reality. The only thing you need to make MMO's interesting is to introduce 3 type of gameplay elements in the same world as well.
Hiding mechanics + platforming, melee combo attack chains that introduce defensive kind of stances you rock paper scissor rotate on, and skill shot abilities that cater to kiting and environment tactics reliant on clever use of positional traps and evasion cds being glass cannons.
