Super Mario Sunshine is fucking unacceptable

Super Mario Sunshine has an obnoxious number of hidden shine sprites. Each level has 8 normal stages. This is fine, the issue comes from each of the main stages having three extra shine sprites that exist as padding. You have the one 100 coin shine sprite, which isn't terrible, since it was in SM64, but the two secret shine sprites are atrocious. For the most part, these are just red coin challenge versions of the secret levels. What this means is that it's effectively the exact same stage as before, however you have FLUDD, and you also have to collect 8 coins with a time limit, making it just feel obnoxious. In levels with only one secret stage its worse. For three stages, the second secret shine sprite is just spraying something specific, thats literally it. A literal waste of a shine sprite. The only one thats different is the Ricco Harbor one, which is just winning the Blooper race with a faster time, thats it. Together, that's a total of 21 wasted shine sprites.

24 of the shines are from blue coins, which means there are 240 fucking blue coins out there, just a fucking waste of 24 shine sprites

In Delfino Plaza, there are a total of 16 shine sprites to be earned if you don't include the final shine sprite for beating Bowser and the 24 blue coin shine sprites. Now since Delfino Plaza is a hub world, and a pretty good one at that, it's mildly acceptable. Now 5 of these come from secret levels, which is fine, they're a whole separate area, and despite two of them considered to be among the most difficult levels in the game (the Pachinko level, and the toxic river lily pad level). After this, it gets bad. Five of them involve spraying something, three of which are blatantly obvious since you need to clean a giant golden object. That specific thing happens three times. You have another 100 coin shine sprite wasting away. One of them literally involves getting 10 coins and giving them to a guy, thats it. Another two involve playing a dumb box smashing mini-game, twice, which is as lazy as it sounds. The last two involve using the unlock-able nozzles. One is visible the entire fucking game, they didn't even try. The other is hidden away, and requires you to do a specific action to get it (get to the top of the lighthouse, use the rocket nozzle, and ground pound), and even then that isn't obvious, so it isn't as bad, but it's still lazy and unacceptable. All together, that's another 11 wasted shine sprites.

The Airstrip, which you can return to after beating the game as hidden stage, has one blue coin, and one shine sprite. Guess how you get it? By doing another fucking timed red coin challenge, and there isn't even a fucking 100 coin shine sprite for whatever reason, even though you can still get 100 coins in the level.

Corono Mountain is the final stage, but functions more like a minor area with a fuckload of blue coins.

So all together, that adds up to a total of 57 shine sprites that serve no other purpose but to pad the game. The game has 120 shine sprites. That means that 47.5% of the shine sprites are just filler content, not actual worlds or stages. 57 fucking shine sprites. You could have 7 additional stages using those shine sprites, with one left over that could have been used to make an additional hidden stage you could have accessed from Delfino Plaza.

Instead of having 7 major areas, a hub world and 7 minor areas that can be accessed from the Hub World, there could have been say 14 major areas with 8 minor areas, or 15 major stages and no minor areas, or there 13 major areas and 15 minor areas, or 12 major areas and 23 minor areas.

But no, what we got was 7 major areas, 7 minor areas, the hub world, and a fuckload of pointless filler shine sprites. Hell it would have been okay if it was just the blue coin shine sprites that got turned into extra stages, but nope, a came that's literally almost 50% filler content.

I love this game to death, but this is really fucking pathetic.

It was rushed and they had to bullshit some way to make it have 120 Shines like the Stars in 64, otherwise it would've felt like a step back. I'm sure they would've much preferred to have more levels if they weren't forced to meet a deadline.

Blue Coins are functionally different from regular coins. They're random collectables that make up a much too large portion of the shine count. The fact that theres 240 of them makes it worse. Blue Coins are a fifth of the total shine count.

I understand that the game is hell to 100%with dumb coin shit but in terms of hub worlds and main sprite missions, I think Sunshine easily tops all 3D marios so far.

my actual issue with the game, unlike OP's sperging about how there's too much, my issue is that over half of the shrines don't count to beating the game.

when i say that i mean everything that isn't a stage shrine doesn't open up the last stage, what i liked about n64 as a kid was that if i didn't like a stage, like wet dry world, i didn't have to do it to beat the game. meanwhile if i don't like the casino island resort? well too bad for me i gotta do 7 shrines in that place to beat the game.
