The Dark Project and Metal Age are the two best and Deadly Shadows is pretty damn good too, definitely worth a play if you enjoyed the first 2. Avoid Teef 4 (the 2014 reboot) and pretend it doesn't exist.

The first is a good game and worth playing once to get the setting and background down. I've only ever played BG1 once but I enjoyed it a lot. The only problem is it has poor replayability, especially compared to BG2. BG2 is superior to BG1 in almost every way but that doesn't mean BG1 is bad (cuz it isn't).

TL;DR Play BG1 at least once.
