Typically higher polycon count in most games, first game to include depth of field effects etc.

and which game would that be

If you use the perspective fix while emulating the graphics look fantastic.

Came here to post the games.

It really is the games that makes a console worth having. Most of the kids on here don't remember how shitty the PS3 was when it first came out, not because of the hardware but because of the lack of titles available.
>>
>>381004875
Being a legtimate competitor with nintendo (the saturn did well in japan but sega completely shit the bed with it everywhere else) and using CD's instead of carts.

Nintendo treated has historically treated third party devs like dogshit, giving them inferior devkits, forcing them to censor their games and telling them to just deal with developing on bad formats like cartridges and minidisk and forced waggle/touchscreen.

Meanwhile sony and the PS1 was extremely supporting of third party developers (they had to, since SCE was just starting and it wasn't sure if they could make something that would sell games) and the CD format was very cheap and let all kinds of B-tier developers produce games for their system.

Sony has also historically been very favorable towards indie developers, with stuff like the net yaroze and their tendency to publish indie games.

You're ignoring the part where RE2's N64 port not only came out about two years later, but it used a special cart that was more powerful than the standard

I'm still waiting for the "WE'RE PUSHING THE GRAPHICS EVEN FURTHER BEYOND" meme to die. Why don't they understand that gameplay >>>>> graphics 99% of the time. Is it because having prettier looking games is easier than making a really interesting game?

If N64 was so much better then why did no one publish games on it?

This very image may be misleading, as the left image has, as far as I can see, the same polycount, the right image is just composed of quads/rectangles instead of triangles. But yeah, other than that, the n64 is known for having strongee hardware and higher polycounts than the ps1.

That being said, wasn't resident evil 64 famous for being the most compressed game ever?
>>
>>381008783
They did. It's just that putting games on carts was expensive so it weeded out the shovelware tier devs.

How can a cart be more powerful than standard? There weren't any enhancement chips for N64 like there were for SNES.
>>
>>381009245
DK64 shipped with a thing that made the console better didnt it?
>>
>>381009580
It came with an extra 4 MB of RAM you could plug into the console. DK64, Majora's Mask and Perfect Dark (sorta) are the only games that need it. RE2 doesn't.
>>
>>381006778
That N64 model wastes so many polygons
>>
>>381008410
You're retarded.

>>381009580
It was extra RAM.
>>
>>381009245
"more powerful" is probably not correct, but N64 karts can varry heavily in the amount of space for data they have. RE2 uses one much bigger than average in order to fit everything on it, which only a big company like capcom could afford

>>381009095
>They did. It's just that putting games on carts was expensive so it weeded out the shovelware tier devs.
What games are even worth playing on the n64 that aren't first party? All I can think of is mischief makers, goemon, rakuga kids and RE2, with everything else being garbage or a bad port of a PS1 game
>>
>>381009879
Those extra polys are used for slightly better animation

Depth of field /= level of detail

Spyro wasn't the first game with level of detail either

Isn't RE2 on 64 worse?
>>
>>381013262
The FMVs were lower quality. Everything else was better on N64.
>>
It was released a full year and a half before the n64 and wasn't a fucking asshole about working with 3rd parties. No propriety software, and a superior format in terms of available space.

The ps2's success was for similar reasons. The same reason Sony tried to do the exact same shit(support a new format) with the ps3, with the important exclusion of a cheaper price and the overall adaption rate of the new format(bluray), and why it fucking failed compared to the last two generations.

Sony succeeded in being first out the door, playing to the strengths of a multimedia format, and being cheaper. This all led to more games, which led to better games, which led to success.
>>
>>381013659

The PS2 succeeded because Sony already had a stranglehold on developers. The hardware was not developer-friendly and the early versions of the SDK were crippled.
