I'm on day 26 and about 16 Kanji through my top 625 PDF

Holy fuck why is Kanji so fucking complicated for such basic speech?

For example I learned Kazuero which means "to count" and the Kanji had like 18 strokes. Why not just use the Hiaragana?

Honestly I would've learned Jap in the 90s to be able to enjoy Jap games but now it seems Japs are doing an effort to bring us the most majority of interesting titles.
Granted, there's many obscure titles (On the Saturn, Dreamcast for instance), VNs and shit that remain in the country of the rising sun but you get the idea.

The only great thing if you know Jap is to be able to buy things cheaper (like manga) and evidently buy the games prior to the localization but I really don't mind the wait.
>>
Why though? I think nearly all the games I'm interested in have come over or are coming over. I've no interest in VNs or dating sims, and most JRPGs aren't the type of game I'm into. I have enough games to play as it is.

Look up kana from wikipedia. Order some manga with furigana. Google grammar when you are confused. (Watch japanese shows / anime to learn how to pronounce if you are not finn)

There is no point in "learning kanji". Knowing radicals can be helpful. But "learning kanji" is just waste of time. http://www.guidetojapanese.org/blog/2014/06/23/you-cant-learn-kanji/

Spend a few days learning kana, then go read tae kim grammar guide, its the first link on google. You master the kana as you read. Then while going through the guide you start reading.
It can be easy and yoy might not get things just start reading and getting yourself used to it.
And add new words to your anki deck.
>>
>>380986157
Kana (Hiragana & Katakana) using either any number of free apps for your phone or just grinding RealKana until you have a decent grasp of them.

Then go into the following three concurrently:
Work through an introductory grammar guide. (Sakubi: Yesterday's Grammar Guide, Tae Kim, Minna no Nihongo, Genki)
Grinding Kanji on Anki with the Core2K and Core6K deck.
Consume nip media. Reading, Watching, Listening. Everything.

I'm growing more and more confident in my vocabulary yet whenever I see some small expression fully written in Katakana like について, によって or ほとんど I slip up and it sucks. For me there's such a big difference in learning expressions like that compared to a regular word with two or so Kanji that it feels like I'm doing something wrong.

What's the best way to drill expressions like that in my head, do I just keep exposing to the language until I get them? Anki doesn't seem to help since most of those "words" have multiple English definitions anyway.

"思" and "言" suck for me as well. I get their meaning and know a few words where they're used in. But if it's just those kanji followed by a bunch of katakana I'll get destroyed.

I think Amazon shipping is 1300 yen per order, right? Makes sense for stacks but other than that, I'd rather not do it. I think Mandarake gives me up to ~10 manga or so for 2400 yen delivery fee. Not quire sure though.

Also, two people using manga with furigana is quite a rarity to see. Everyone I know prefers the VN + parser approach. I guess I'll get to that one as well sooner or later as furigana-reliant reading doesn't really drill in the kanji as perfectly as it should.

Also, how far are you into your studies? How much do you study a day?

Shipping costs can be quite deadly yeah. Usually good idea to order a lot. Doujinrepublic has no shipping fees so that's nice. But the items are usually bit more expensive due to that.

>Also, two people using manga with furigana is quite a rarity to see. Everyone I know prefers the VN + parser approach. I guess I'll get to that one as well sooner or later as furigana-reliant reading doesn't really drill in the kanji as perfectly as it should.
Reading material with furigana, is only natural since that content is aimed for people who can't still master kanji even in Japan. I don't really like VNs much, I chose manga because I like reading manga, simple as that. I also read manga without furigana, but that's bit more work depending on the heaviness of text. For PC games I use my own OCR scripts to sometimes lookup sentences, but don't use auto translators or such.

>Also, how far are you into your studies? How much do you study a day?
I don't really consider myself studying. I just naturally read whenever I feel like it (during workdays everyday at bus). I consume Japanese media everyday though. I don't do flashcards and other crap since I'm not studying for test or anything, and since forcing to memorize things is boring. (For same reason I have no education either)
I guess if I wanted to be more effective, I would actually get some Japanese contacts to chat with daily (e.g. in MMO or something)
>>
>>380991627
I like Amazon because it gets to me in about 2-3 days and you pay customs fees upfront to fast track your parcel. If you get hit with customs here you have to pay an £8 or £13 handling charge on top of everything else just to get your goods so I like using Amazon to avoid that.
The custom threshold is something ridiculous like £18 as well so even just a couple of books puts you over.

I'm getting there. My vocab is just shit. I understand now that sentence structure is pretty simple.

Usually starts with the subject/topic, and ends with a verb. Anything else in the sentence can be put in any order (with some exceptions) and followed by the appropriate particle. I kind of stopped studying over the past month, but I gotta pick it back up.
>>
>>380992669
I'll try and read up on this later. Not having to boot into Windows would certainly make things easier. My goal unironically is to be able to read the ten Yotsubato tankobons a friend got for me a few years ago so I think with a few months of dedicated practice I could do it with a dictionary.
>>
>>380993160
It's very simple compared to most other languages. Verb conjugations are extremely regular for example.

I get that there are certain ways to arrange parts of the sentence. Subject/Topic usually go first, then anything time related goes after that. At least it's the preferred way to do it (so I've read), it sounds more natural to native speakers. You could probably get away with arranging the sentence anyway you please, but it'll end up sound like Yoda-speak to Japs.

Depending how porn focused the game is the dialogue can be very simple (most dlsite stuff, story heavy vns are different case). More common with porn manga though.

Yes, it's your right to withold resources. That doesn't change that blockading your most vital war resources and telling everyone else that they don't sell or else is a hostile act in times of war.
Imagine if the Soviets forcefully stopped every single oil supply at the height of the Vietnam War as an example. And then relocate Vietnam to be a neighbouring country instead of on the other side of the world.
Mind you that doesn't defend the Imperialism of pre-WW2 Japan's military, i'm just saying the aggression defense isn't particularly strong when preventing oil from reaching a wartime nation is an extremely aggresive act in and of itself.

I've been thinking of finding some Japanese children's books (aimed at around 4-5 years of age). Really simple books with simple vocab and grammar. Maybe I should shoot for older though? I want to get the basic kanji down as well, so maybe something aimed at grade 1 ? It should be a great learning aid, since the material is aimed at children, and that's about where I am with my Jap skills, if not lower.

One thing I've always been curious about. Is there such a thing as studying too much? Can your brain only handle so much new information per day, or is it a good idea to just go as much as you can? And is it better to be inconsistent by squeezing in as much as possible whenever you can, or is a steady, say an hour or two a day better for long term learning than sometimes an hour, sometimes 5?
>>

Get something you would like to read. There's surprisingly amount of furigana content that isn't even directly aimed for children. Also games such as Zelda contain furigana.
>>
>>380994605
Even if you're at the profeciency level of a child, you have the brain of an adult so starting with something simple with furigana would be best because you'd still be able to understand it if you knew enough to read a picture book with one sentence per page.

You will need grammar because a great deal of japanese words are context sensitive.
>>
>>380994876
Isn't it the other way around? Brain plasticity decreases as we age so it gets harder to learn things that children have an easy time with?
I mean, language is not some complex math problem, it's mostly remembering things.
>>
>>380994908
But how do you look it up if you don't know what it means OR the pronunciation? Imagine how hard it would be to use a dictionary if the words weren't alphabetical.

It's a really casual construction but you should be able to figure out the meaning from context even without grammar knowledge
In fact before you look up a grammatical point you're unsure about, you should always try to extrapolate some kind of meaning from a sentence in which you understand most of the words

That's about how it goes. That guy's probably talking about simple grammar. The basics are very easy to learn, but there are little things that will be a pain in the ass for a while. I've known Japanese for years, and I know people who've known it for years longer than me who still get tripped up with certain aspects of the grammar.

It's cute how so many anons feel insecure about their own self-worth to the extent that they use their ability to decipher moonrunes as its foundation. And posture on a cambodian basketweaving forum to appear more fluent, just for that tiny ego boost.
