What a fucking travesty.
Also, the music is great, Ashe, Basche, Balthier, Cid and Reddas were great, plot is far better than the stupid anime shit present in the rest of the series, and I don't even know what you mean by "shit filler", you probably didn't even find half of the sidequests on your first playthrough.

>>
>>380985116
To be fair, the game balance overhaul very well could be the "2 JOBS!" and removal of spell waiting features (Which we know off because trailers show highlevel spells used simultaneously.) and nothing more.

it is cause of concern but i think it is too early to say that it isn't going to be a improvement to the point that when PS4 emulation is thing people gonna say you should emulate this or pirate the PC version instead, the spell thing is a HUGE mechanical improvement.

Then again...

I'm not hyped at all.

FFXII has one of the most poorly paced and directed videogame stories ever produced. It's on par with Devil May Cry 2, IMO. Disjointed cutscenes, no real direction, with horrible pacing and a main character that doesn't even feel like he fits into the narrative, like he was a last minute addition.

In addition to that, the game plays like a single player offline MMO. Let me repeat. A FUCKING SINGLE PLAYER OFFLINE MMO.

The fact that people unironically claim it to be their favorite or one of/the best FF game in existence boggles my fucking mind. The game is objectively flawed.

That being said, I never did play the Zodiac Job System version, and haven't played the game in forever, so I might actually pick this up if I can get it for cheap, just to experience the job system and to re-experience the game itself.
>>

>>380978220
I know I may be the minority here, but in terms of gameplay I thought FF12 was the best. However, it has several flaws.... quiet a bit actually, but they seem easy to resolve.

That's why I hoped FF14 when ARR was announced, having a similar hud like 12, I jizzed myself hoping to play a game like it online. Then I found out ARR was just a watered down WoW. The announcement for FF12 remastered has me hyped.
>>
>>380987075

You should really play games before you try to talk about them anon.
>>
>>380987217
In Xenoblade you actually do stuff with your main character while the other two are AI handled.
In FFXII the game plays itself to the point that the hardest boss in the game requires you to just leave your console running while you do other stuff.
>>
So Ashe really wanted the pirate dick right?

>>380987576

12 made me quit FF.
After X being a step in the wrong direction but high in production value all the same, XII did just about all the wrong shit possible.

>The fact that people unironically claim it to be their favorite or one of/the best FF game in existence boggles my fucking mind. The game is objectively flawed.
because it has one of the best gameplay in the serie, on a very few game where weapons and armor matter, also, you have a lot of spells and not just recolored fireballs
>That being said, I never did play the Zodiac Job System version, and haven't played the game in forever, so I might actually pick this up if I can get it for cheap, just to experience the job system and to re-experience the game itself.

A huge issue I have with Xenoblade is not having any control of party members outside of tension chains, people need to understand that the game would be a lot better if you could tell your party members what to do in specific situations like XII gambits do.

>>380984643
>you probably didn't even find half of the sidequests on your first playthrough.
This is something that surprised me, just how many sidequests their were that weren't tracked anywhere. The sidequests that are tracked (marks) is an insanely huge sidequest on its own, almost being a central part of the questing. Things like the fishing game or the footrace minigame I completely ignored the first time I played the game. I also missed the rare game sidequest. I never went back to the great crystal or went back to the pharos of ridorana.

So much of the game is optional but the care crafted in those optional areas was out of this world. I am enjoying the game so much more on my replay than my initial playthrough. Alot of the world building makes much more sense and the general layout of all the mechanics and combat just click in these "endgame" zones.

Fuck the great crystal not having a map though.

>one family of moogles is seen
Multiple families. There are Gurdy and Hurdy and their family. The Moogle 8 being sold to by the Seeq, the cartographer's guild, and the Moogle reconstruction team. Moogles became the dwarves of 12, doing all the menial clockwork construction. In canon they are the best airship builders. Their handiwork and dedication is all pride based. They have a fucking culture even if they aren't playable.
>Nu Mou are not present
Didn't play the game. There is a whole sidequest relating to 3 Medallions that are done with Nu Mou and they have a good story in it. All of Mt. Bur-Omasice and the religion around it are stewarded by Nu Mou. They are the scholars of the world.
>Bangaa lose all traces of prideful nature...
In Dalmasca, a war torn desert locale, everyone suffers and becomes vagrant sand thugs. Migelo, a Bangaa and Penelo's foster father runs a proud business and is economically prosperous (thru backroom dealings). The bangaa in the Empire thrive, even though they recognize the racism of the empire, they work within it. Seeing mostly Seeq and Bangaa in Nabradia did send a message though.

The culture in 12 is good, people just didn't see it because they play FF games like themepark rides: do the thing then move to the next ride. You have to actually talk to NPC's and do the sidequests to see life to the fullest. Hell, the Seeq band of robbers by Barheim are ran by a Human female, after hours of setting it up to be just another Seeq or Bangaa. They even go so far as to subvert your expectations.

The game starts everyone off with 1 gambit set to attack the nearest enemy. Change that to attack what the party leader attacks and you manage all the rest of the combat yourself. There you have xenoblade where you can go in and choose any option when needed.

I set up a few extra gambits as they arose but it takes 10 minutes combined in your entire playthrough.
>1 person casts libra on themselves
>cast bubble on party leader or yourself. If on party leader you just have to hit up/down on d-pad to instantly change party leader and the gambit will trigger
>cast curaja at 40% hp, this will heal everyone and negate the need to keep healing each person
>set 1 person to steal against enemies with 70% or more hp
There, you just set up all the gambits you will EVER need. all other actions you can micromanage as they come up. Setting a single ailment cast esunaga negates 90% of the other shit you would have to micromanage anyway and still play the game. Gambits were awesome, the only people who hate them are trogs that can't think for themselves.

>when an enemy cannibalizes another for the first time and their level doubles
>when you fight your first optional boss and they lock out items or make metal armor slow down your ATB
>when you find the first crystal mimic and shit your pants
>when you finally find a way to get to that one point on the zone map by coming in from a totally separate zone and the monsters are on a different tier powerlevel.
>having Bender yell at you and laugh at you while being a total putz.
The combat and exploration around it were amazing.

>>380997358
Basch stays pretty central to the story in relation go Gabranth and his actions thru out the game. His ending is monumentally important to his character building and the world outlook as a whole. Only Penelo is useless, because her use is to be a foil for Vaan and he naturally outgrows the need for her to do that job. Vaan is pretty cool by the end of the game.
>>
>>380998025
He's relevant because of Gabranth's existence but they don't actually do anything with Basch as a character once you get past the Sandsea until the very end when they remember that Gabranth exists.
>>
>>380997081
Yeah pretty much, all the other characters had some form of relevancy to the story,
ashe is the grudge holding princess,
basch is the knight who lost his country and honor the same night,
balthier is a former judge and the son of the mad scientist in charge of the manufacturing of nethicites for military prurposes
Fran is the exiled viera from eruyt village, she's highly knowledgeable about mist and lore and she's also the sidekick of balthier
And vaan and penelo are just war orphans that that do not seek revenge and serve as a way for the player to identify themselves to give some sort of external point of view to the party
>>
>>380978220

>>
>>380978220
Fell PS4 needs good FF game after all, since XV was a disaster
>>
>>380998387
>Vaan does not seek revenge
Vaan's motivation for the first quarter/third of the game was to get revenge on the empire and if people fuck Basch's shit up for betraying his brother. He's the one who really carries the party until when Ashe joins for the real and takes over as leader.
>>
>>380995163
>Alot of the world building makes much more sense

The lore entries were a nice touch.
>>
>>380996403
Game size?
>>
>>380998265
yeah except for all the cutscenes in between the sandsea and the showdown on the airship with Gabranth.
>showing all the judges are fractured, loyalties are hidden and manipulated
>has to kill someone he clearly cares for for the greater good
>lets his inner rage for his hand in Nabradia in urging Ashe to use the Sun Cryst to destroy
>knows about the occuria by proxy, knows man's history is about violence and war

The history of Ivalice sees Basch and Gabranth as 2 sides of the same coin, they meld into one being in history. Both living in shadows and only showing a single side of who they are to the light of history. As the game goes on Basch resigns himself to the fate he ultimately chooses in the end. You see him not thinking Ashe's idea of living in the shadows as being smart to him slowly realizing that is what is needed to really do what they want, to him realizing he personally has to commit to it for it to REALLY work as he has injected himself into the scenario.

Plebs hate FF12 plain and simple. If you understand anything about its themes it handles it well, even in its admittedly butchered state.

There's even signs of different ages in tech shown in the game. The airships run off mist, then develop ways to function without it. Before that they extracted oil in the Nam-Yensa. The Jagds exist because of atom bomb style testing on magicite, leading to exclusion zones similar to chernobyl where the magic "radiation" messes up their current tech. There is world building on display all over the place in 12 and its thoughtful and reasonable.
>>
>>380998565
His only motivation and dream is to ba a sky pirate, the first time you see him in the game he's looking at ships in the sky daydreaming about them.
Of course he wants the empire and basch to pay for what happened to his brother but ultimately he realizes that not only basch is innocent but also that being thirsty with vengeance is pointless because he can see it in the way ashe acts, she's blinded by anger.
>>
>>380983656
XII isn't really set up for "pure" traditional turn-based combat though.

>>
>>380978220
Of course. I have a copy for PS2. It's the undisputed champion of Final Fantasy games.
>>
>>380999359
The thing with Basch vs Gabranth is that its mostly one sided on Gabranth's end because he's busy doing stuff on the other side of continent instead of actually interacting with the party until the very end.

The player knows that Gabranth as a beef with Basch and that the other kind of regrets what happened before but they cram in a lot of their interactions with each other at the very end.

>>380999376
He doesn't settle on the sky pirate thing until Jahara which is a good while after Ashe joins and he has time to interact with Basch and understand that he's not a ruthless bastard. It was a dream that he gained over the course of the game and not one that he started with.
>>

>I feel sorry for you who used gambits, really, yes it is a retarded design choice: "gimp yourself to enjoy the game"

What? Gambits were great though. The problem was that they've only been used in a single, narrative driven game where you only control a single group of three. They definitely need to be used for a more open ended and expansive game.

>Basch fighting to save the world
>gets captured
>Ashe gets mad and cucks him while hes imprisoned
>Basch dies
So glad that sequel got trashed. Ashe is a whore. Fran shouldve banged Basch.
>>
>>381000123
You are right they endload his interactions but not entirely so. They interact thru out the game when they meet, its usually just typical sibling bickering. Even before the reveal there are numerous hints as to what it is. Him being Basch's personal endgame boss makes perfect sense for his character growth. Gabranth wasn't even his brother, the guy in the suit is his brother, Gabranth is just the title. Basch understands that by the end and makes amends with his brother to finish what he started, in a better way. Like passing a torch.

The real flaw was the sense of urgency in the various cutscenes then letting the player fuck off for 20 hours on their own and the next cutscene starting with that same urgency still in tack. But then thats also the players fault in some regard.

Luke was split between Basch and Vaan. Vaan has all the dumb optimism of Luke while Basch has a familial relationship to the games Vader (Gabranth), and goes thru an arc of denial then anger, then acceptance.

So he's mad that the game was a return to form and theme and was upset that they didn't continue the terrible trends of FF10 hallway boogaloo?

12 is closer to the older 8-16 bit FFs than it is to the ps1-2 era ones. People just don't realize it because they are idiots. The lore and worldbuilding were more akin to modern day dark souls than it was to other 3d rpgs at the time. You had to spend time in the universe interacting with it to understand the various viewpoints instead of having it vomited onto your lap in cutscenes.

>>381004018
The penultimate design should have been keep the old liscense board, let the player pick a preferred class and have their starting point reflect it, then modify the LP cost of unlocking skills. Make stuff in their class cost the same or slightly cheaper, make stuff outside their class much more expensive. It passively nudges you into doing your class but lets you go outside it for needed skills at the cost of value. make the player do endless hours of grinding if they want to unlock the whole thing if they want, but the time wouldn't be worth it, making them a laughing stock if they hold a complaint with its design.
>>
I already have it on PS2.
>>
>>381004430
That's just making the game more grindy. If you are gonna restrict items, make it fully. You can just set up gambits and leave for a couple of hours to farm LP, thats no fun at all
>>
>>381004284

>>381004669
It only makes the grinding useless after a point. You shouldn't be grinding kills for LP for a skill you don't need, but simply want. You should have the freedom to do it, but it should be in such a way as to make it unneeded or unnecessary. With the new system I might need multiple people with a curaja or esunaga or bubble but can't because I also need my tank or thief guy. Yeah the 2 boards minimizes when this happens but my system completely eliminates it.

If you are a mage and want to use a katana you should be able to, or try to steal if you want, you just have to "train harder" for the ability to do it. Under the new system you won't have the party you want unless you go wrpg style and min max your character before you even start the game. Just let people play the game and learn it instead of having them feel compelled to go online for reference sheets.

Missible syndrome is one of the strangest things in RPGs. Fans hate missibles, this system makes entire combat systems a missible in the abstract. My system doesn't, just rebalances when/if people get ALL the skills.

In my FF12 playthrough right now with the old board my party is in the early 60's in lvl and most but not all of the board is mastered. There is still more to get but I've done almost everything in the game, only working on the last few rare hunts and the last 2 marks. I'm still not completely done the board and would already need useless grinding to master it just for the sake of mastering it. Let people do that if they want but make the general outlay just nudge them toward actually doing their class. People that would grind for all the skills under my system are free to do so but it would be categorically in the "time wasted" camp after a point. But let them decide that for themselves instead of just closing entire avenues down.

The meme persists because even casuals realize Basch being the main character with Ashe would have made a better game. The beginning of the game should have been from Her POV and finding Vaan down in the sewers mucking around being his typical streetrat self. It would have framed the conflict between the Empire and the Resistence better. We don't need Vaan to know the EMPIRE was gonna be bad guys and the RESISTENCE would be good.

The Empire did nothing wrong though.

I know. But you don't realize that they are just an opposing viewpoint and have actually helped their citizens until you play the game. Vayne is to blame, not the empire, they even tried to stop the war. His own brothers try to stop him.

There really aren't opaque good guys or bad guys in Ivalice games. Just differing viewpoints taken to logical extremes to the point of being illogical.

I didn't really give a shit about XII because I was younger and fell for autist memes on the internet. I also didn't like Vaan's and Penelo's designs and assumed those were the main characters or whatever.
I put it in my backlog a few years ago, will probably buy it once the price drops.

Didn't the original game have some bullshit?
Someone told me that you can get the ultimate weapon by running around in a specific spot or something like that
>>
>>381011136
Don't remember about the original but the IZJS version had powerful weapons that had like a .0009% chance of spawning in some areas. Then there's the whole deal with the Zodiac Spear disappearing from the game if you open certain chests.
>>
Would this be a good entry point to the series if I've never played a FF game before?
>>
>>381012020
Probably not. Its a drastic change from previous entries, and more appreciated if you've played FFT or Vagrant Story.
>>
>>381012020
Not even slightly. You play FFXII when you're sick of FF and want something different with somewhat familiar lore.
>>
>>381012020
It's pretty unique compared to some of the other ones. You could but FFX and FF7 are better if you are completely lost on FF. Maybe even World of FF.
>>
>>381011136
In order to get the strongest spear (one of the strongest weapons overall) you had to not open chests in a few opening areas of the game. You will have to keep going back to these palces and not opening the chests for about 25-30 hours before you can even open the "correct" chest.

It was designed to sell strat guides at the time. Purposefully putting some sort of info into the game that you literally could not know unless specifically told. Luckily the internet killed that practice.

You could still get it, but like >>381011572 says, the drop rate is laughable. The devs probably laugh every time they hear someone grinded a boss that has a 1/1000 chance of spawning, then having a 1/1000 chance to have a drop, then that drop being 1/1000 of being the spear.

I'd laugh too.

This. No forced romance, no hypercompetent preteens. Just adults doing adult work in an adult world with kids being out of their depths being dragged along. I remember a video where someone is running up and down on some airship deck I think until he picked up an invisible item or something like that. It's been years so I don't remember it that well.
Did stuff just randomly spawn in some areas?

The thing with the spear is also weird. So basically you didn't open chests in the first areas and after a while you just went back and opened all of them and one of them has the spear?
They will fix shit like this, right? I mean I like mysterious shit but come one.

Also reminds me somewhat of SotC where you finally have enough stamina to get to the garden and the only thing there is a fruit that was basically a "Fuck you". That was a bit funny though

I think it is just symptomatic of the whole industry at this point: the whole Wider Audience mentality.

Idk what SE could do to redeem themselves in my eyes. Even with the VII remake, it is a really big turnoff to me how it is being released in episodes. And whatever reason they give for it being in episodes, it is all just bullshit.

With XIV, I almost don't blame them for wanting to cater to the casuals paying their XIV subs every month. Not to mention they buy cash shop items like candy.

It doesn't help that as a "core gamer" or "hardcore raider" or whatever you want to label me - I am the smallest and yet hardest demographic to please because I don't give a fuck about standing around in town playing dress up and doing ERP.

they replace the non-summoner party members, have a restricted move pool and are usually weak. They also consume limit break bars, which you would rather spent. Basically you use 2-3 out of 13 for situational gimmicks (tanking a spell, draning their mana) and ignore the rest

>>
>>381017837
Vaan was meant to be in the game from very early on. Its a meme that he was added half way thru. His brother being in Basch's unit and witnessing the events of the assassination are a central part of how it went down. The fete being handled by Migelo, thus giving it a link to Penelo and Vaan is central to how they steal their way into the palace.

Yes Basch more fully IS what Luke was, but he was never hopefully optimistic the way Luke was in the OG trilogy, that goes to Vaan.

>>381018170
They were a thematic addition more than a purposeful one. There is no "summoner" style in the game. The bestiaries for the summons expand the relationship between Tactics and XII. Also in theme with Ivalice games, they were evil in Tactics but the winners in XII (while still being the Dark aligned ones), it shows that good/bad is only perceptual and that overtly good doesn't always win by sheer dint.

The combat system is almost infinitely variable. You can make it auto play (but would need an intensely intimate understanding of the game to do so) or set it to do nothing, or any variation of the 2 extremes. You can even toggle real time or ATB wait.

People who complain about the combat either didn't play it or are too stupid to understand it and should be disregarded as equally as someone who didn't even play it.

My roommate complained about the game but didn't even learn or use the Libra tech, then when told about that was trying to beat elementals that were 20 levels higher than his team and raging. I just told him the game isn't for him.

You can, but you missed the key word: optimal. The game is built around using Gambits. You can turn them off, but imputing each individual command over and over, even in Wait mode, is a slog for a game that plays in real-time. I've tried it. Ironically, turning Gambits off for a character defaults them to auto attacking anyway.

Vaan and Penello are R2-D2 and C-3PO. They're meant to be the player/audience's eyes, tagging along and witnessing the story while not actually being part of it.

Problem is that's a good gimmick for a movie with a passive audience, but not so much for a video game where players usually want to be an active part of the story.
>>
>>381025686
>I learned the ins and out of the combat system and after hours of gameplay have the spells and skills to do the things I shitpost about
>that means the combat is easy or bad

You just displayed 4 separate iterations of ways for combat to be easy, but negated HOW you got to that point. Good job, you understand the valuable aspects of the skill suite available to you and decided to min max every encounter instead of just playing the game. Casting haste, berserk, and bubble, equiping all katanas, etc. etc. sure seemed necessary to kill that passive chocobo though right.

You are complaining that you have an endgame understanding of the combat and blaming the game for being accessible and intuitive.

Congrats, you played yourself.
>>
>>381026086
>>So you are too casual to not input commands manually,

That makes no fucking sense whatsoever. What the fuck are you even babbling about? XII is simply not built for the style of combat of the old games. The flow is completely different. If anything they could've found some other way to approach battles rather than using plain simple menus.
>>
>>381025757
You set up 1 universal gambit, then do the rest yourself.

Party leader gets
>Enemy - Attack closest
All other characters get
>Enemy - Attack party leader's target

There combat is fixed 100%. You never have to go back to it ever again if you don't want to.

Maybe if there was some kind of system to plan ahead and somehow program responses to common situations, if only there was some sort of system like that to make it less menu intensive.

I was the guy above talking about summons being more ceremonial and existing as a thematic link between XII and Tactics. Its YOU who thinks summoning or summons are a central part of FF and NEEDED to be good. Yeah they suck but they aren't there to be OP, they are there more for lore than gameplay.

Magic is not useless. Try killing a flying monster with your melee weapons and you realize magicks are awesome. an enemy that has 11,000~ HP and taking 7,500+ damage from a spell of its weakness is a good amount. Casting Bio on enemies that are immune to all 8 elements is a thing. Scathe is non elemental and does 1 time damage instead of bleed style of Bio and goes thru to enemies that are immune the same way

Most of the damage from a Quickening Chain comes from the special move at the end, the game will autocast the appropriate one to the monsters weakness by default, thats why people see the Ark one the most, they use them against bosses with Holy weakness.

People that cry about it just don't realize its uses. Time and Green magicks being better than straight offensive ones is an iffy thing, but alot of weapons (all the ranged ones) have elemental attacks making them deal much more damage than one that does less overall damage but no element.

The game is complex, too much so for your typical FF fan. The complexity is closer to western style table top rpgs where skills/magic/tactics have a clearly defined use. People just want to feel powerful doing whatever they choose instead of feeling powerful by choosing the most optimal choice. Pick the right tool for the job.

>>
>>381031205
>>381031263
You guys are vastly overestimating the amount of people that have played the IZJS version. The complaint was a meme even when the US version first released. FF is the casual franchise for a reason, it actually caters to casuals. This game didn't do that. It made the casuals, who are still diehard fans, feel stupid.

That is the source of all the meme-ing, a feeling of inadequacy. they didn't want to think for themselves, thats why they sought out FF games in the first place. They just wanted to mash x and feel good about it, this game said "you don't even have to mash x if you don't want to" and they thought that meant they can't have fun. It disrupted the skinnerbox mentality they set up in their own mind that has been feeding them feelgood endorphins ever since.

False. People have managed to do it in under ten minutes.

It took me four hours to kill him in my playthrough.
>>
>>381032104
Monk Vaan is the most popular suggestion for maxing but if you're accounting for swing speeds, the best Monk is actually Fran because she has the fastest animation while having above average magic letting her heal.

Likewise, Balthier is the best Shikari and Basch is a better Samurai than Ashe once you start talking about combo attacks instead of muh 99/99.

The remake will make this a lot more apparent because you can take two jobs instead of just one now.

So yeah no hype
>>
>>381033093
Samurai factors in both magic and strength, however Ashe and IIRC Penelo both have high enough magic stats that allow them to reach 99 Magic to allow them to use a full Genji set as a Samurai.

However, there's more to a physical class than just stats, you need to account for swing speed as well because this can cause a character with worse stats to out damage one with higher stats because their animation finishes faster. This is particularly relevant for classes that rely on combos like Samurai, Monk and Hunter and slightly less so for Knight, Uhlan and Breaker.
>>
>>381032104
>>381032358
>>381033093
All of these are "best" at different things for different stats, and all of the differences are negligible and basically disappear with loot (except model attack speed frames, but that's already pretty inconsequential).

Vaan should go monk right away for fastest 99 though, because you can get the iron staff immediately and start Dustia chain farming.

I think I have a problem, because I'm actually incredibly psyched to Dustia chain farm. I will be pissed if they took it out of the game after leaving it in the Japanese zodiac edition.

That's because in the American and European versions of the game Square Enix decided to make him way easier for some reason. He only has around a million HP in those versions, while he has well over ten million HP in the Japanese versions.

So most people who speak English probably didn't find him that difficult in comparison to Yiazmat.

>>381033402
If memory serves me correctly, all you really need for Dustia chaining is just a bunch of Phoenix Downs which can be used with any class.

Vaan's a great monk because of his high strength and magic stats but if you're the type that really autisically obsesses over having the absolute best characters, you most likely won't be running Monk Vaan.
>>
I never finished it because the story didn't seem to be going anywhere. Probably going to give it a go again.

>>381033727

Does choosing Monk make fighting barehanded viable? That was always the weirdest license in the original.
>>
>>381034262
basically, Dustia chaining relies on an exploit of you leaving the map before the game registers that the monster has died. So you get the drops and EXP for killing a high level mob (by one-shotting it's undead self with a phoenix down), over and over.
>>
>>381034551

Monk is the only class with the license. Its better than your poles for a while but you'll be using a weapon at the end like usual.
