I'm not a big fighting game player, and I'm not very good at them, and I have only played ARMS once at a friends, and don't own a Switch either.

But it seems to me like the people that dislike the game didn't understand what it was? "wha to much blocking" "all you do is dodge" "there's no content" What the fuck did you expect? It's a fighting game. The majority of the entire game is going to be dodging, waiting for openings to strike, and blocking. It's just the nature of the game style.

The game probably could use more content, and maybe a lower price than what it is, but why is everyone crying about how it plays? All fighting games are this way. You dodge, you block, you attack. That's every god damn fighting game ever made and it's all they ever will be.

Played with motion controls for the first 9 hours, then switched to pro controls and have been doing very well with them. I like both schemes. Motion is fun and allows for some tricky aiming which can be important for catching landing Twintelles and Ribbons. With Pro, I find that I make less mistakes and have a lot more precision in every aspect; aiming, punching, blocking, dashing. I believe grabs are objectively worse with Pro controls. I intend to play with Motion again tonight when I go to play with friends.

The game is really fun, and there's a surprising amount of strategy needed to win consistently. If you okay mostly portable like me , then the standard arcade mode is still a fun challenge. It's not the typerson of game you'll inotably sink like 800 hours in. It's the kind of game where you'll play a handful of matches every day or two, but it's DAMN fun. Also, don't listen to the angry, jaded people. Just give the motion controls a shot, because they're easily the best, and most surprisingly tight, implementation of the tech that I've seen in a game.

You should only be grabbing when you know it will connect anyway (when the opponent has whiffed with both arms or when you've connected with an electric attack and they are unable to move or counter)

All this talk about ARMS and not a word about my man Mr. Yabuki.

In all honesty I was pretty much like OP, seeing everyone play like retards and just run around spamming grabs.

But when I saw this old man play I saw the potential the game has.

Like many others here I won't buy it for 60$, I don't think the price matches the game, its a light filler to play when you wanna switch it up a bit between the "heavier" games so it should be priced around 20$~30$ in my opinion.

Though I think it is way to early to judge, give the community some time to practice and learn and I think the game has some potential.

I'm enjoying the fuck out of the game and I agree. It shouldn't be more than 30 dollars. The game is fun and polished, but it's got a Street Fighter 2 level of content where they give you an arcade mode and a multiplayer mode and not much else. The multiplayer experience is the game.

The free DLC does make me feel better about the high price point, though. I hope they will support it for at least a year.

As someone who can't typically surmount the learning curve of fightan games, ARMS makes it a little clearer what your mistakes may have been as a player because there's a bit less to keep track of at once and the core inputs are simple. The Party Mode lobby system is a neat idea that goes some way to easing the pain of being shit so I'm more willing to improve, and the presentation is geared strongly toward making the game feel great to play. My biggest complaint out of the box is that I can't hold my arms apart and play without motion controls. In the name of streamlining, if the joy-cons detect any opposing movement, they'll swap immediately to motion controls from standard.

I'm not sure I'll get quite as much leverage out of this as I would a shooter, and I wish there was a bit more to the singleplayer, but I'm absolutely certain I'll meet the 20-hour standard that I expect from $60 games.

Your special meter fills up as you punch. Even if you punch nothing but air. But guarding and playing passively does nothing.

And even if the rush specials still need skilful timing, they also allow for an additional level of counter play where you can cancel your other counter options for yet another and the most tight kind of counter possible.
If they're guarding and you've got your special you can attack relatively freely, because even if they try to counter you, you can fall back on your special if you time it right and you'll be good.

The game is not a game that rewards players playing passively.

Personally I don't understand the hype for this game. I'm not opposed to motion controls, I actually really enjoyed Skyward Sword's controls. But to me this game just looks like fighters slapping wet noodles around. The character design is fantastic but the gameplay just looks too slow for a competitive fighter and there isn't enough fluff in the game to make is a fun casual fighter. To make me get interested in the game they'd have to up both the speed of the punches and the movement speed of the characters.

It's a fun party game, but the higher up the skill ladder you go, the more you realize playing passive is the way to win. Dashing to dodge punches is simply too strong, you can't curve your punches far enough to catch enemies as the dash has no cooldown.

Also, not enough content in it to justify a 60$ pricepoint. I'd wait until future DLC patches and see if they improve the gameplay any. Either that or wait for it to drop in price.

Who here /splitscreenwithfriends/? I found it surprising that the 3 and 4 player free-for-all fights were actually fun as fuck.
