The only game I've ever seen my dad play is DOOM back in the day. I think he might have bought Devil May Cry (without knowing a single thing about it mind you) back when we got a PS2 but I don't think he ever played it for more than an hour since by that point he couldn't use a controller for shit. He used to like watching my brother and I play GTA and only ever really got butthurt when he picked up hookers.

Almost 200 hours in. He didn´t even started the first mission after getting to the hause

What is the reasoning for the placement of Father's Day in the US anyway?

In Europe it's simply Ascension Day.
>>
Dad installed Duke 3D in my old computer and would boot it with DOS for me to play when i wanted.

Later he used to watch my play SotC.
It had a pretty simple concept with good execution, so he could keep up with the gameplay, unlike most other games.

The dude's dad probably is gay. My dad was a final fantasy fag and played D&D a lot. Which I found odd because he was a black dude in a gang but he'd legit invite his boys over to play D&D and he had a fucking wizard's hat too.

My dad tried to father-son bond with me once while I was skilling in Runescape. I afk while fighting a cow while I chat with him about whatever the fuck he was talking about and I died. After that he kept saying I sucked at vidya and kept making cow related jokes like when we'd eat dinner he'd ask if I needed a bigger fork because the steak is tough.

Miss that faggot. Last game he was hyped for was FF15 and idk I was kinda salty about it but I forced myself to play it for him.

Now he sort of just sits alone drinking and doesn't really engage. I'm going to try to talk to him later today after work and maybe suprise him with my old xbox 360 and play a few games with him. Take him and my mom out to dinner if the guy I'm supposed to be going out with falls through.

My dad's pretty similar. He never finished college, so he's constantly reminding my brother and I that we disappointed him by never finishing college either. He projects a lot of his own insecurities and and personal failures onto me and my brother when it comes to life decisions.
A big example is that he constantly complains that my bro and I are both childless at 30+ Years old.
>When I was 22 I had two kids, a wife, and a house!
>You're 32, live in an apartment, no kids, and just hanging out with random girls!
>Point out that inflation and the bloating of the college system pretty much means I'd have be in enormous debt to even have a chance to have a career/house like his.
>tells me that's bullshit and that I'm just lazy.
Yeah Dad, I should be like my step-sister that lives with you. $100k in student loans, but hey, at least I'd have a communications degree with no job prospects because there's a 100:1 ratio of applicants to job offers in the field!

We played a lot of things together/at the same time during the SNES era.
When we got our first PC (Pentium II) we didn't really do any co-op things, but played RPGs and action-adventures at the same time.
Then, for a few years, he didn't play much, but started again when I moved out and while I was at university there were years when he played more than me.

His biggest accomplishment, at least in my opinion, is finishing Dark Souls 1 with M+KB.

Being a parent is hard.
Sure video games are basically harmless but in the end they're still just a time consumer, you don't really get much out of them except in the moment happiness.
Parents want their kids to be happy, but know all that time playing is not time growing as a person or getting a new skill, etc so it's a mixed bag of trying to get your kid to not spend so much time playing and trying to respect them and their hobbies

My dad has never been much into vidya. However, when I was a kid, me and my older brother played a lot of Jazz Jackrabbit 2, and my dad eventually started playing and got fond of it as well.

A few years ago he asked me if I could install it on his PC so he could try it again, and I gladly did it, hoping I could maybe get him a little into vidya. I started playing it again myself then as well, since I hadn't played it since back then either.
A few days pass and he comes and asks me to help him, as he's having trouble with the first boss. Now, having gotten older, I've naturally also gotten better at games, and I'd figured out you could shoot as fast as you could press the button, as opposed to just the autofire speed. I sit down and annihilate the boss for him. After this, he dejectly just closes the game and says that he can't press the button that fast. He hasn't touched the game since.

I wish I had remembered to hide my power level. Sorry dad ;_;

Sure. When I was a kid we'd sometimes play Scorched Earth.
My advantage was knowing what all the weapons and shields did.
His advantage was being an adult and being good at adjusting the direction and power.
We were pretty equal. Good times.
We would also compete for the high score in Tetris.

We don't play together anymore, but he just stopped by for a beer 20 minutes ago.
I love my dad

Yes, but never the ones I enjoyed. He's not dead, however he doesn't play video games anymore. He stopped around the middle of the PS2's lifespan. He used to play lots of sports and racing (not kart racers, but things like Nascar) games with me, the only reason he stopped was because at some point playing video games made him physically ill, kind of like motion sickness.
He's made fun of me for still enjoying video games, despite how he's played games way longer then I've lived before finally stopping.

Boredom in the current year is such a dumb thing to feel.

I used to feel bored when I was a kid with dial-up internet and restricted access to things. But now I can just play a vast catalog of vidya, watch tons of movies and shows, browse the web, read news, learn new things, work out and many more stuff.
When I was NEET for a year, the day still lasted too little.

I watched my dad play Mechwarrior 3 and 4 growing up, occasionally my brothers and I could rope him into playing Mario Kart on the N64 with us. That was about the extent of how much he participated, but years later we got him to try Mechassault 2 multiplayer. My brother promptly hacked his Mech with the power armor within the first minute of the match. He kinda just quit after that since he was a little miffed that he got instant-killed by a mechanic he didn't know about.

Very rarely my dad would come in while I was playing vidya and just kinda grin at me for a few minutes. He's an old dude so I don't think he has any real opinion on vidya. My dad and I used to play ps2 EA sports games.
I remember him playing madden on the ps1 with my uncles

He would come in when I was playing onimusha or something and say I couldn't beat him at NBA or madden and he's seen me play and I'm no good

What was really really funny is when I beat him and he would get so mad. I picked the Trail Blazers with Rasheed Wallace and go to town.
He would pick the spurs because that's where we live. He always said I used cheat codes and that I know how to do something he doesn't.

He would jump and cheer when he won though. And we would talk shit the whole game.

i wish i could run more on this shitty laptop of mine. id let my dad play games. he's been into them as we were growing up and i sometimes catch him playing gta5 on my brother's xbox when my mom isn't around to hound him to death. maybe euro truck sim 2 cause he's big into cars, but being americano he probably wouldn't enjoy driving on the opposite side. i'm too broke to buy american truck sim or any games for that matter

Got some good dad vidya stories.

I'll start with some early ones. Before he and my mom got divorced, he had a SNES. Used to watch him play Mario, SFII, star fox and what not. So he got me starred early on vidya.

Few years later, parents divorced and he lives alone in a shirt apartment. He had an N64. It's his birthday and my brother and I want to get him a good video game. At walmart, we're browsing and see Zelda: OoT. Cover looked cool so we got it. We had no clue about the series or the quality of the game. Dad loves it and we would watch him play and play it as well. First game I ever beat.

We also played racing games and later on even Soul Calibur...

He would play as Raphael and call Link "The Link"

Good old Dad.

>Pretty sure it's the other way round if anything
It's neither. If you actually want to know the proper distinction, it's pater and genitor.
Genitor: the biological father ("the sperm donor")
Pater: the person who raises you, the person who is legally and morally responsible for you.

Ideally they should be one person, but as the entirety of human history and virtually every society in the world teaches us: it's frequently far from that.
This is pretty damn relevant distiction that exists since Roman Law, that has for it's extreme usefulness been adopted into studies of family and kinship in academia.

Used to play monopoly tycoon multi-player against my sister with my dad helping her, I'd be on a different floor with the second computer fapping to hentai. Good times.

Actual games I played with my dad were this old as shit pirate/trading game way back in like 1999 or something. Also Risk on the computer so we could have AI players.

Recently I've done some walking simulators with him, the Wolf among us went OK but he loved The Stanley Parable. His favorite game he's played with me ever I bet is The Long Dark.

He's out of town this weekend so no fathers day yet :/

My dad utterly despised video games and resented me for being a fat crybaby who couldn't talk to girls and hated sports. He would almost certainly hate me if he knew what I became today. When I was a kid, he would trim my nails, shave me, trim my pubes, pop pimples on my face and back, smell my dick and armpits when I got out of the shower to make sure it smelled nice, and shower with me sometimes to make sure I used the soap properly. He was also addicted to pain meds and beat my mom.

He passed away in 2011, was a sports reporter for USA today.

I remember him letting me stay home from school when we went and got the N64 (and my brother went to school, kek. I forget why I was able to/allowed to). Clip out newspaper articles bout vidya like one about Half-life 1. He loved repeating the warcraft 2 voiceovers (Yes Milord, "I'd rather be sailing", "See the world they said", "zug-zug"). Didn't play games with us, mum did play SNES super mario though and she likes those casual phone games.

He was a great dad until the early onset alzheimers (died at 59) hit. I was fortunate that after the initial 2 or so years of trouble/tension between us we were able to make amends before his sanity left (my brother was not as lucky).

I hope none of you have a close relative with alzheimer's or it hits only post 85 when it's more manageable and understandable to deal with. If you do then I hope you seek help to manage it and take care/visit/ect. said relative. It's really tough and terrible shit.

He was a paranoid schizophrenic and would make up stuff all the time and believe it to be real. I found out later he had done some crazy stuff (like tried to kidnap me when I was young) and would often go off his meds, say crazy shit, and have to go to a mental hospital for awhile (This happened a lot more when I was younger and could barely remember it. All I remember is him going away for periods of time). He died back during Christmas '96 from a heart attack brought on by the flu.

Even if he was insane at times, I loved him and still miss him to this day.

Nah. I'd take my PS2 over to his place on his weekends, because vidya was my favourite thing ever. Every few visits at some point he'd storm in while I'm playing and start screaming at me about how I never help him with anything and how my mother is a bitch and I should call her to come pick me up. This was usually after I did try helping him with something but got told to not bother because I didn't look happy to be doing it. Whatever, he's a cunt. I ain't wishing him a happy anything. Thanks mom for coming to get me as quickly as possible before he started on me again while I was sitting in the drive way.

I used to watch him play Atari and some NES games. Then he dropped gaming.

But from time to time he watched me play games. Diablo 2 he was at first concerned then amused by my necro's corpse explosion. He also watched me play KOTOR 1 and 2 a fair amount, smash Bros, etc.

We were kinda poor because of my sister and mother's health conditions, but he always tried to encourage my hobbies, even the nerd ones.

I guess he felt the same, seeing as every Christmas we put up a second smaller tree in our dining area that had ONLY Star Trek ornaments covering it. Most were ships from the series that lit up or you could press a button and hear some corny holiday sentiment.

Father's Secret Stash-ception

Also while my father never played vidya, he had an eye for business, and made his comments on the industry. I will always remember what he said back in 2007 about the PS3

Dad got me into games, bought a SNES back in the day. Super Mario, Megaman X, Super Metroid were the big games I remember enjoying with him. Hell, he even speed run Super Metroid once to get the best ending because he could.

Even outside of Video games: he coached my little league baseball, and was there for the one season i did football

The day that sealed him as my hero: quarterback was giving me shit after football (7th grade), had been for awhile, told dad about it. "How do you stop bullying? You punch the bully until he stops." I turned just to confirm with him, and then i charged that little shit and beat his ass right there in the parking lot.

Dad watched and tried to keep the other kids out, bully isn't so though without his backup. Some other parent tried to break it up, Dad stopped him, it became a fight, he laid him out on the pavement. I guess it helped we were both doing Karate at the time, sparring helped prepare you for how fast you gotta move.

My Dad is my Hero.

I've benefitted from motivated forgetting (had to look up the term but that covers it) so I mostly just remember the most jarring stuff. Time also somewhat benefitted me - I was there 16-19 when he was bad but lucid while my brother was at college and when I went to college (and he came back/commuted from home) it got worse before they had to put him in a nursing home due to belligerence and just reaching the breaking point. So I just remember bursts and flashes. 18 and us moving, she was crying about something with my dad and I'd just try and cheer her up by being mister bouncy optimistic hopping up to the attic to bring down boxes. The worst was waking up to her screaming and a loud bang when after his 3rd brain surgery he entered her bedroom and threw her off the bed thinking she was a nurse/orderly. Cop came but he was able to charm and seem sane. That was the biggest hurdle, it took a long fucking time before they could get him committed. It only happened shortly after I came back from college. The mental health system here is abominable.

It really is a miasma, a kind of black hole that sucks you into their insane aberrational world. My mother and I realized that after during a respite when he was in the hospital just how night and day the difference of living was. And the tragedy is before the illness he was the best dad imaginable. Roses for my mom every other weekend, take us to baseball games or to that island park in between DC and Arlington, smart as a whip, he literally got into a scuffle (just a shove/push) with barry fucking bonds once, and apparently when he was 20 or some shit he went on a road trip with a jailbait girl running away from home, the FBI came to his parent's house and his mom told them to fuck off her son is too smart for them to find.

Never got in trouble because the girl went back. When I hear about his adventures, my mom growing up in Switzerland with friends who were royalty (her dad worked for dupont, were middle class not royals or anything), my mom's mom growing up in Nazi Germany working at a radio station and when she saw the writing on the wall going on an odyssey on foot to France to escape the Soviet rape machine...oh yeah, and mom's mom's first husband was a German double agent spy who got killed in Russia. Mom's father was rags to riches poor boy raised by a whore of a mother in the depression who worked hard and went to Princeton.

And then here I am playing them vidya gaems, trying to get my foot in the door for a foreign affairs/national security job but failing miserably.

I hope the blogging wasn't a bother to anyone, but if your dads were not great just try and be a greater dad for your future kid. You'll make it.

I never played video games with my father, but when I was really young (7 or 8) I would watch him play might and magic 6 and 7. It was literally the only interest I shared with my father and looking back now I can realize I wanted to have some sort of connection with him.

That lasted for maybe a few weeks till he stopped letting me watch him play the game. Since then I've had no connection with my father at all. Didn't help that a little while after that he disowned me and said I wasn't fit to carry his name.

My dad was never into or good at video games. We played the original Super Mario Bros together a few times, but I don't think he ever got past 1-2. It's been such a long time. Now he plays word games on his phone, and that's about it. I think the time he finally gave up on video games back in the past was when I was solving puzzle games without his help. I actually beat the Fool's Errand on my own which was leagues harder than 3 in Three which we played mostly together.

I've told this story a number of times on /v/.

When I was very young, I was not very fond of learning to read. So, my dad is playing tomb raider 1 on our pc, he's following a printed out walkthrough. Over the course of the series, he teaches me to read through tomb raider walkthroughs.

He once called me his tomb reader.

> I would setup enemy CPUS and stun them just so he could land a warlock punch
>He would do the same with me so that I could land a Falcon Punch
> He suffered through Star Wars Empire strikes back on N64 because I was too scared of it and so that I could cheer him on
> He let me play the spaceship levels that were actually fun
> He was shit at Pokemon but I used glitches to make stupid broken teams for Pokemon Stadium so that he could win and have fun
>His absolute favorite game of all time was 1080 Snowboard Avalanche on Gamecube

I have a good Dad and I love him. I just wish we would talk more and hang out more now that we're older

I think he feels like he failed me ever since I tried to off myself and subsequently drop out of college

Apparently my dad played some video games before I was born, but gave it up for whatever reason. I got him to play video games a couple of times when I was real young, but he eventually refused past like age 7.
He dropped dead when I was 10, so I won't be playing games with him any time soon.

My apologies if that post of mine brought the mood down. I hope your grandfather did have a good long life to have enjoyed and helped others enjoy theirs.

One lesson I/my mother learned from our experience was it tends to be better to 'play along with' their dementia than to confront it. Imagine if you saw the sky was blue, everyone else treated it like it was green and admonished/looked at you concerned when you said it wasn't green. Confronting them with their insanity isn't helpful for anyone, it was better to play against it. So for instance her late father (+85 so it was a bit more reasonable) was in the nursing home and wanting to get out of bed because he believed just had to make a train he was scheduled to go on. So instead of going "Dad there's no train it's all in your head" she went "Oh no dad, they had to stop all the trains there's a big snowstorm about to hit" (No such storm). Then when he tried to go "Oh I will just get a plane then" she bullshit that there was a huge hurricane coming up from the south grounding all the planes so the safest thing was for him to stay there.

I never got the "Don't recognize his own son" situation but you could roll with it by going "Oh I just got a haircut it must really make me look different", "Haha yeah I had plastic surgery how do I look?"

Also as long as you make sure the nursing home or caretaker is good, considerate and all that it is entirely alright to need to seek them to help you. It can otherwise drag you into their world of madness if you don't, and it is really hard to break free of that especially if it hits during formative teens/early 20 years.

Oh, I didn't mean it like that. My point was that it's quite telling when an entire board can make jokes about horrible shit like rape like it's nobody's business, but no one will joke about Alzheimer's (yet) since it's so awful. Even /b/ has its limits.

But thanks for the advice. "Playing along with" them is just what psychologists are taught to do with the chronically psychotic/schizophrenic, so you've definitely got the right idea. I guess I'm just afraid of being caught in a lie. Like, what if I do play along with one of my granddad's misconceptions, and he realizes his mistake and notices I essentially just keep entertaining his bullshit. I'm afraid he might not trust me again. Does that make sense?

Only ended up playing Tekken 2 and Mortal Kombat II with him as a kid before he decided to quit video games and gamble, drink and do illicit drugs instead. He's a deadbeat prick and I always pretend like I forgot his birthday or Father's Day on purpose.

Says I'm wasting my time and money on video games.
>>

THAT'S THE POWER OF THE KEYBLADE
>>
>>380971728
No, my parents split up when I was two.
My mothers next boyfriend was kinda responsible for me getting into vidya though, he bought a PC and we watched each other play games occassionally. We actually played many classy games, such as Tomb Raider, Mech Warrior, or Wolfenstein.
I got a GBC and PlayStation soon after, and the rest is history.
>>
Not really. He played video games back when they were an expensive fad (spent a couple grand on a Pentium with Windows 95) but gradually dropped them and never got back in. Past that, after occasionally buying me and my siblings a console on Christmas once or twice he never cared much.

Never really had too much in common, tried a bit to get into cars but I don't have the space or attention span to get too deep. I know enough to have a conversation about them at least.

That being said, I'm a shitty child and don't really talk to people who don't initiate conversations with me so prior to today I hadn't seen my dad in 6 months even though he lives 15 minutes away. As you might guess, he's the same way and he's an old friendless bastard so I'm quite certain I'll end up the same way, but without the kids
>>
>>380971728
He used to but he slowly turned into a controlling vindictive ass hole over the course of my life and I was forced to disown him and cut off all contact.
>>
>>381026995

Yeah that's a valid point, it's more for when they are further gone in the middle to late period of their dementia. In the early period rather than playing with a bold faced lie it may be better to downplay it. You know, "Hmm I dunno grandpa, I've been really busy so I may have missed that call of yours", "Oh man that story you told me was so long ago, I barely remember anything of it. Was it really like that?"

Like there's a funny case when my dad was still relatively lucid, able to drive me to get my driver's license and be left alone mostly with no risk. He had his 3rd surgery and yelled for me at the foot of the stairs screaming that our beagle had run out of the yard and gotten hit by a car. The beagle was wagging his tail happy as a clam right next to him. So there's a choice of:

A) No dad the dog is fine you just imagined it
B) No dad you had a nightmare the dog is okay
C) No dad, that was one of our neighbors on the block, their beagle got hit ours is okay.

Feign ignorance, forgetfulness or uncertainty if you don't play along with it. That way you have plausible deniability. You can also judge when to be honest or not.

When I was young he would play a lot of Super Mario Bros. and later Super Mario World. I recall he also liked Tetris. I don't think he's touched a game in years, though. We still watch movies together though and generally get along, but he doesn't have the patience and I can probably one life World and I doubt he wants to sit there and watch me play.

Playing vidya with my dad gave me some of my fondest gaming memories.

He got a PSX and we played through Abe's Oddysee, Resident Evil 2 and Metal Gear Solid together, among others. For those games specifically, he even waited for me so I didn't miss anything.

For RE2, we only played on weekends at night, turning off every light in the house. And he woke me up on saturdays by playing at full volume the MGS main theme from the OST that came with the game.
