Dad installed Duke 3D in my old computer and would boot it with DOS for me to play when i wanted.

My dad wasn't really into videogames, although he did beat Super Mario Bros. and the first Bomberman on our NES (well not really an NES but one of those chinese knockoffs that had a bunch of games on the console already) and I remember my little 7 years old mind being blown.

Sure video games are basically harmless but in the end they're still just a time consumer, you don't really get much out of them except in the moment happiness.
Parents want their kids to be happy, but know all that time playing is not time growing as a person or getting a new skill, etc so it's a mixed bag of trying to get your kid to not spend so much time playing and trying to respect them and their hobbies

My dad has never been much into vidya. However, when I was a kid, me and my older brother played a lot of Jazz Jackrabbit 2, and my dad eventually started playing and got fond of it as well.

A few years ago he asked me if I could install it on his PC so he could try it again, and I gladly did it, hoping I could maybe get him a little into vidya. I started playing it again myself then as well, since I hadn't played it since back then either.
A few days pass and he comes and asks me to help him, as he's having trouble with the first boss. Now, having gotten older, I've naturally also gotten better at games, and I'd figured out you could shoot as fast as you could press the button, as opposed to just the autofire speed. I sit down and annihilate the boss for him. After this, he dejectly just closes the game and says that he can't press the button that fast. He hasn't touched the game since.

Yes, but never the ones I enjoyed. He's not dead, however he doesn't play video games anymore. He stopped around the middle of the PS2's lifespan. He used to play lots of sports and racing (not kart racers, but things like Nascar) games with me, the only reason he stopped was because at some point playing video games made him physically ill, kind of like motion sickness.

That was about the extent of how much he participated, but years later we got him to try Mechassault 2 multiplayer. Very rarely my dad would come in while I was playing vidya and just kinda grin at me for a few minutes. He's an old dude so I don't think he has any real opinion on vidya. The one time he's played any that I know of is when he tried Cabela's Big Game Hunter for like an hour and struggled to use the controller.

Playing Tomb Raider and pic related are some of the best times I ever had with my dad. We also raced Hummers in NFSU2 because he thought it was funny.

Got some good dad vidya stories.

I'll start with some early ones. Before he and my mom got divorced, he had a SNES. Used to watch him play Mario, SFII, star fox and what not. So he got me starred early on vidya.

Few years later, parents divorced and he lives alone in a shirt apartment. He had an N64. It's his birthday and my brother and I want to get him a good video game. At walmart, we're browsing and see Zelda: OoT. Cover looked cool so we got it. We had no clue about the series or the quality of the game. Dad loves it and we would watch him play and play it as well. First game I ever beat.

Years later he would legitimately enjoy playing lightgun shooters, so we got him a copy of Virtua Cop 2 and a Sega Stunner. Still plays them.

Used to play monopoly tycoon multi-player against my sister with my dad helping her, I'd be on a different floor with the second computer fapping to hentai. Good times.

Actual games I played with my dad were this old as shit pirate/trading game way back in like 1999 or something. Also Risk on the computer so we could have AI players.

Recently I've done some walking simulators with him, the Wolf among us went OK but he loved The Stanley Parable. His favorite game he's played with me ever I bet is The Long Dark.

Not with me. He just played games. Those games weren't exactly co-op (warcraft 2, age of empires, lucas arts point and click adv, diablo 2 etc). But he was the one who bought me my first console (chinese nes knock off) and my first PC. He used to play Tekken a bit. I vaugely remember him watching/playing some Final Fantasy too. It's the game he knows about the most, but I've never asked whether he played it or not.

He passed away in 2011, was a sports reporter for USA today.

I remember him letting me stay home from school when we went and got the N64 (and my brother went to school, kek. I forget why I was able to/allowed to). Clip out newspaper articles bout vidya like one about Half-life 1. He loved repeating the warcraft 2 voiceovers (Yes Milord, "I'd rather be sailing", "See the world they said", "zug-zug"). Didn't play games with us, mum did play SNES super mario though and she likes those casual phone games.

He was a great dad until the early onset alzheimers (died at 59) hit. I was fortunate that after the initial 2 or so years of trouble/tension between us we were able to make amends before his sanity left (my brother was not as lucky).

I hope none of you have a close relative with alzheimer's or it hits only post 85 when it's more manageable and understandable to deal with. If you do then I hope you seek help to manage it and take care/visit/ect. said relative. It's really tough and terrible shit.

Grandma is in her late 90s and she has to be told who i am when ever i visit her. She is a great woman and i love her a great deal. I try to see her every chance i get because not many people visit her. I spent most of my childhood under her care while my parents were at work so i feel that when she passes away it will truly be symbolic of those times being gone forever but I will always look back fondly on them.

He was a paranoid schizophrenic and would make up stuff all the time and believe it to be real. I found out later he had done some crazy stuff (like tried to kidnap me when I was young) and would often go off his meds, say crazy shit, and have to go to a mental hospital for awhile (This happened a lot more when I was younger and could barely remember it. All I remember is him going away for periods of time). He died back during Christmas '96 from a heart attack brought on by the flu.

Even if he was insane at times, I loved him and still miss him to this day.

Nah. I'd take my PS2 over to his place on his weekends, because vidya was my favourite thing ever. Every few visits at some point he'd storm in while I'm playing and start screaming at me about how I never help him with anything and how my mother is a bitch and I should call her to come pick me up. This was usually after I did try helping him with something but got told to not bother because I didn't look happy to be doing it. Whatever, he's a cunt. I ain't wishing him a happy anything. Thanks mom for coming to get me as quickly as possible before he started on me again while I was sitting in the drive way.

I used to watch him play Atari and some NES games. Then he dropped gaming.

But from time to time he watched me play games. Diablo 2 he was at first concerned then amused by my necro's corpse explosion. He also watched me play KOTOR 1 and 2 a fair amount, smash Bros, etc.

We were kinda poor because of my sister and mother's health conditions, but he always tried to encourage my hobbies, even the nerd ones.

I guess he felt the same, seeing as every Christmas we put up a second smaller tree in our dining area that had ONLY Star Trek ornaments covering it. Most were ships from the series that lit up or you could press a button and hear some corny holiday sentiment.

Honestly I'm 28 now and I've come to actually know my dad as a person, and I'm not really a fan. Whines a lot, is extremely hypocritical, throws temper tantrums at age 54, and I can't really talk to him about anything serious because he is incapable of speaking like an adult about real issues as he tends to just try and joke about it instead of talking about it. Still, he raised me and gave me all I needed and I'll always love him for it. Buying him a Dry Age ribeye steak and cooking it for him, along with some mashed potatoes, his favorite vegetables and his favorite style of cake.

My dad loved to play Age of Empires 2. He loved to read and do puzzle. He died when I was 15, its been 3 years since. He had a DS he barely used and I wish I could show him some games that I think he would have enjoyed like Professor Layton, Ace Attorney, or Brain Age.
