/v/ was my first back in 2008 because I liked video games so naturally I came to the video game board. /b/ was much more popular but I figured that that board's just too much for lil ol' me.

/v/'s awful now because of the newfags, redditors, and faggot mods. I don't mind everything else but when you start deleting lolis and unjustly banning for properly cropped porn then you're reinforcing the notion that /v/'s the worst board on 4chan.

Many many years ago when i was 15 and you guys gave me a harsh and needed reality check that no one IRL had bothered to give me.

The atmosphere where i lived was insanely stiff and "polite" and so /v/, and 4chan in general was my first experience of people conversing and critiquing without fear of consequence.

/v/ is mainly negative, but when everything else is in a aura of faux positivity, it is a neutralizing influence and valuable source of alternative viewpoints, obvious shitposting aside.

It used to be because you could have conversations without any agenda/baggage attached. Since it's anonymous, people judged the merit what you say, not your identity. If you spouted retarded bullshit, you were either promptly ignored or called out on it. If you had legitimate discussion, you were able to engage with others that, while they may not always agree with you, at least you can have an intelligent rational debate.

But you're wrong about /v/ being awful now, it's always been that way. Lets say around 2009 is kinda the turning point- the renaming of the board to "I'm the boss of this gym" and all the different spongebob and simpsons shitposting, along with green lex luthor was the start of the major experimentation for non-gaming related events and just for board culture.

Sometime around then is basically the falling of the board- but it already going that way after japan time. Then again the site as a whole (the popular boards) took a grand nosedive in quality, just because of the fact that more people were finding this site. You can thank the overall bullshit with starcraft 2 and league of legends for /vg/ and pokemon 5th gen for /vp/, furthering the split of /v/ and preventing discussion of one game or another. I guess /vr/ is fine but at the same time it's not like it has a growing community only because you have a very fine split of what you can and cannot discuss.

It's a complete and utter shithole, but guess it has it's own special things that put it a step above certain other message boards.
