Just because you have watched a bunch of anime doesn't mean you'll understand a straight translation. The cultural difference between the US and Japan is far too great for even weebs to understand direct translations. From my experience of playing direct translations, they are more useful for reference points than actual immersion most of the time. Look at Kajar Labs retranslation of Chrono Trigger for example, yes the game is technically understandable but if you attempt to play it with the translation then lines aren't going to flow well at all if you're not well versed in Japanese terminology and such. This is why we have localization.

I'm not defending NoA/Treehouse though, their Fates localization was actually horribles. However, that doesn't mean a straight translation would have been much better if not worse. No game, not even shit like Neptunia, have direct translations because the culture between Japan and the US is too large too just translate it and be done.
