Super Mario 64.

The concept of running and jumping around in a 3D space seemed like witchcraft to me.

Not 3D World that's for sure. It felt like a Mario game with all of the magic surgically removed, fun and satisfying but totally uninspired.

I legit feel sorry for gamers that didn't experience the magic the first 10 hours of this game gives you. It really made me believe anything was possible in this version of hyrule.
>>
>>380948903

>surgically removed

Having a different gameplay style doesnt mean it didnt have the magic

I would agree the atmosphere wasnt as strong as past games, but it's far from not imaginative and uninspired

Not being permanently set in Space the entire game is far from uninspired

Glad there was somebody else that had that feeling. When I first went out of give village to hunt, I noticed that I had what I then thought was a shit ton of health and stamina. Whay rrally got to me was walking on up to the cliffside right outside the village, and then that magnificent music would play. It made my mouth agape and my jaw dropped at its beauty. No vidya in recent memory had me like that since. Hell before Tri it was vidya from give Dreamcast era such as Shenmue.

Super Mario Maker. Before that? Fuck, I dunno, probably Wii Sports.

I have two very close instances, prepare for some long stories.

1: Smash 4. I've been a big fan of the smash series my whole life, but something about Smash 4 just seemed to capture me. By the time I stopped playing smash 4, I had mained every character at one point, including DLC, and I can legitimately say that Smash 4 was a game I was good at on a competitive level at one point. Even when I go back to play smash 4 now and again, I always go back to my 3 best mains, Link, Ryu and Roy.

2: Pokemon HeartGold, a close buddy of mine, who's still my best friend had SoulSilver, and we were about 9 years old when HG and SS first came out, and we played all the way through them, trading, comparing records and generally having a good time. I genuinely don't think any game I've played since then has had that much "Magic" to it, and I don't think any game ever will. Nostalgia really plays a big part on the gaming experience, that's for damn sure.
>>
>>380950271
I dont get all the hype about DD, yeah it has some really cool mechanics and concepts but its so obviously unfinished and lacking in content... A more polished DD 2 could be a masterpiece but what we have now is not.

Bravely Default. Never before has an RPG had so much magic as BD. The game had so much to explore, so many mysteries to solve. I remember staying up literally all night, unraveling the beautiful story and filling out D's journal. Oh, and don't even get me started on when I found out about the hidden ending by shattering a crystal. Truly the best RPG I've ever played. Papa bless.

Super Mario Galaxy for me.

I was 19 years old when it came out but even then as an almost 20 year old, I honestly felt like I was a kid again playing this game. It's just pure 100% fun.

SMG2 was even better but the feeling wasnt as intense as Galaxy 1.

I'm currently having a blast with BotW too though.
>>
>>380948603

I cant imagine being 10 years old right now and playing BotW.

It probably feels as magical as when people first played OoT in 1998.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing
This game is not a masterpiece, but it got me sunked for a whole week, I had fun, even when my character died time after time it didn't frustrated me, it gave me this feeling that video games ment to give.
Everything was in the right place: mechanics, music, plot, humour.
Now I'm replaying the game with a different character, which I never did before.

Not this bland ass game for sure.

Closest on Wii U was Pikmin 3.

It wasn't 3D World, that's for sure. Probably Xenoblade Chronicles X. Before that, NieR (the original). Before that, Chrono Cross. Before that, Secret of Mana.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth did it for me, but it wasn't really because it was particularly impressive, but it just hit so many of my buttons. Soul Hackers did too when I played the 3DS port of that.

>>380950893
I love BD, but that game kind of fell apart for me near the end and soured my experience.
I'm also glad the team's next game looks completely different from what we saw of Octopath Traveler. I liked Bravely Second but I felt like the magic of the first game was difficult to recapture with a fairly standard sequel.

Witcher 3

Super Mario Galaxy 2, the game was just one thrill after another constantly changing things up and keeping the experience fresh. 242 stars seemed like too little honestly.

Playing New Vegas 100% blind without ever seeing any ads or trailers.
Best feeling of exploring a game world I have ever had in my life.

Close second would be The World Ends with You experienced the same way.
Honestly, games are best experience with 0 prior knowledge of said game.
Stop watching Trailers for all games and YT hype vids prior to release.

Shadow of the Colossus. It was extremely fucking frustrating at times, but the relief of taking down a colossus was incredible and the overworld, at the time, felt mysterious and intriguing. I remember starting up the game, picking some direction and just riding out to see what I'd fine.
I know now that there really is nothing out there, but it was still really exciting and there are a lot of nice scenery you can take a break at.
