Honestly, there are actually a small amount of "terrible" units in the game. Even a bad unit can be made "usable" with proper play and skill inheritance. For example, in the case of Male Corrin, he has a nice weapon, but he gets overshadowed by other sword users with built in Distant Counter in their weapons.

You end up using mostly the same team though, I used the same guys the whole time basically and from 60k points up they've all been feather capped, and if we get another Tempest later on it'll be the same team again barring Tharja and my healer, unless I get a non-Olivia dancer, if you reach for 99k points than you can't screw around with experiment teams you just go for it with the best you got.

Fortify is good if you have a Quick Riposte user and/or a blade tome user.

Xander in particular benefits from having a Fortify buff, QR and Bonfire as it lets him completely tank most physical damage, allowing him to keep his QR active for the next turn while killing with the Riposte Bonfire. It also lets him survive some magic attacks where he'd normally die on the follow-up and counter attack with Bonfire for the kill.

Blade tome users benefit from that massive +12 damage along with +18 from Hone. Ursula with Blade+, Hone, Fortify and Goad can kill nearly the entire cast including some greens.
