Atari to Release New Console

If they really really want to succeed at a new console, they should ship it with a free full set of the development tools required to make the games for it. Maybe I'm just remembering my youth when new PCs came with BASIC, but I think the idea might have legs.

Fuck, what's it been-- 14 years since a new guy came and gave competition? Right on Atari! Time to show the amateurs how its really done. Also if somehow they implement wood in this console I'm buying twenty.

Since Atari has actually become profitable again now that they focus on mobile games, is this going to be another Ouya-clone?

Atari had only $6 Million in expenses last year, all but guaranteeing this is part of a collaboration. The question is though, why would anyone collaborate with Atari when they could just do it themselves? What does Atari bring to the table?

Any sort of console competitor shouldn't really be a possible option because obviously no one wants to pay a higher price for a more powerful console and there's little point in making something that competes in the $250 range.

The best I can see is a Super Ouya, something that competes with the Switch in terms of power but at a cheaper price because no portability. If Amazon is involved I'm sure they could have some of their own titles that they're crafting up in their game studio if that's still around.

The main reason they failed had nothing to do with the controllers. The 5200 and 7800 failed because the 2600 game library was so absurdly large that nobody felt the need to bother with a new Atarii. The later machines failed for lack of compelling new games.

I was talking about this with some friends earlier, but what space could atari even aim to occupy? They don't have the money for any decent exclusives, so being a Nintendo won't work out for them. Without exclusives they're playing more on microsoft territory. If they're going low end they'll have to outdo a $199 XBOX One S, and if they're aiming for the high end they'll have to compete with a $499 XBOX One X. Really the only place they could fit is that $99 microconsole market but even Nvidia is having trouble doing anything there.
