How scared are Nintendo, Sony, and Dell right now?
>>
If they really really want to succeed at a new console, they should ship it with a free full set of the development tools required to make the games for it. Maybe I'm just remembering my youth when new PCs came with BASIC, but I think the idea might have legs.
>>
Fuck, what's it been-- 14 years since a new guy came and gave competition? Right on Atari! Time to show the amateurs how its really done. Also if somehow they implement wood in this console I'm buying twenty.

Since Atari has actually become profitable again now that they focus on mobile games, is this going to be another Ouya-clone?
>>
Atari had only $6 Million in expenses last year, all but guaranteeing this is part of a collaboration. The question is though, why would anyone collaborate with Atari when they could just do it themselves? What does Atari bring to the table?
>>
how disruptive would it be if Atari, Sega, and someone else like NEC basically establish an alternative console generation right in the middle of this cycle?
>>
>>380933028
name recognition, and established history in vidya games would be my guess. but i think it's going to be like >>380932785 suggests. i doubt they're going to do anything other than a gimmick/android shit.

Brand recognition. Their one remaining resource is that we will be curious enough to read their advertisements. It's not a trivial thing to have, it's actually kinda what everyone wishes they had.
>>
Atari is a horrible publisher though, all their recent games have been shit. The fact that the console is PC hardware just confirms it will be another Xbox or PS4 with some shitty first-party remakes.
>>
>>380933159
>>380933203
More brand recognition then whoever their partner is? Unless Ataribox isn't the actual name.

Nostalgia is very strong right now, people are bored of the stale Nintendo-Xbox-Playstation gens. We need some new shit.
>>
>>380933338
yeah

even if it was someone like Amazon, Atari still lends a degree of legitimacy to the endeavor, despite whatever problematic history the company may have had. everybody knows Atari and the logo and its association to games.
>>
I swear to god Atari had better drop this feline-based hardware naming system. I swear it had furry undertones and destroyed them. Jaguar? Lynx? Fucking gay bruh.
>>
>>380933350
I'd agree with you if it was Sega, but Atari? The people that played on an Atari when they were kids are in their 40s now.

Any sort of console competitor shouldn't really be a possible option because obviously no one wants to pay a higher price for a more powerful console and there's little point in making something that competes in the $250 range.

The best I can see is a Super Ouya, something that competes with the Switch in terms of power but at a cheaper price because no portability. If Amazon is involved I'm sure they could have some of their own titles that they're crafting up in their game studio if that's still around.

but really who the fuck knows
>>
>>380933540
>5200 and 7800 also had bad sales
>>
New system is to be "based on PC technology". If it's not an Android box, are they making a PC with an emulator overlay?

That's literally the only demographics that actually buy consoles. Millennials and Gen Xers. Kids these days don't buy consoles, they play mobile games and handheld stuff.

So if you want to make a console of any sort, you're kinda trying to appeal to the nostalgiafags who are in their 30s and 40s now. Maybe some in their 20s.

>>
>>380934521
The main reason they failed had nothing to do with the controllers. The 5200 and 7800 failed because the 2600 game library was so absurdly large that nobody felt the need to bother with a new Atarii. The later machines failed for lack of compelling new games.

Atari was always about throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks. It was pure luck that the VCS/2600 exploded in popularity. Nobody really knew what the optimal controller design would be back then which is why you see retarded controllers with tons of buttons on everything.

Sega is the best one on this list in modern times and failed out of the console industry.
>Exclusive Sanic
>Exclusive FATLUS (Persona, SMT, Etrian Odyssey, a few more)
Exclusive FATLUS would severely take the wind out of The Switch's sails, probably as bad or worse than Monster Hunter Worlds, and cut off any life the 3DS has left in it.
>Sega Platinum IPs, Bayonetta 1, Vanquish, Madworld, Anarchy Reigns
>Phantasy Star

I was talking about this with some friends earlier, but what space could atari even aim to occupy? They don't have the money for any decent exclusives, so being a Nintendo won't work out for them. Without exclusives they're playing more on microsoft territory. If they're going low end they'll have to outdo a $199 XBOX One S, and if they're aiming for the high end they'll have to compete with a $499 XBOX One X. Really the only place they could fit is that $99 microconsole market but even Nvidia is having trouble doing anything there.

Even if Amazon isn't their partner, expect them to attempt some endeavor in the future. Their recent expansion of their game dev department and purchases of Twitch and CryEngine point to this.

Plus, $75+ billion and one of the richest men on the planet means you can afford to take such a risk.

I'm in the 30+ region where I know a ton of retro hipsters and I feel like there's a hard cutoff with the NES. The 40+ I know are more interested in American retro arcade, more than Atari and the 20+ crowd are constantly circklejerking over the N64.

You can see it in the prices on eBay, just how cheaply most of the 2600 library is.

What 3rd parties would make good companies to partner up? I'm thinking console exclusivity, still on PC if they were planning on it/ already were/ want to. Atari developed games staying as actual exclusives.

Personally I think Devolver would be fucking perfect
>Hotline Miami 3 could be an amazing launch title and fit the aesthetic of the system
>Bunch of other neat games made by them and coming out, if they make it a powerful console they could use Serious Sam as a game to flex the graphics, slav sorcery could probably even make it run and look good on a decently powerful console
>Pretty sure Devolver published a bunch of couch multiplayer games which would be a perfect addition if Atari wants to push an old school angle
>Devolver puts out a bunch of free games for fun and if all of those and any future free little games were made available baseline with every console and maybe some older Atari games as well you'd have a really good value right off the bat and have something built into the console if there's a slow season where no games are coming out you want

they already did that twice albeit with old franchises.
niche games are extremely popular on steam, i have no doubt they'll port some more recent games, and franchises.

Get cucked sonybro
>>
It's a second-generation 'Steam Machine'. The hardware partner is Valve. It will be completely console-like in design and packaging. It's built around new non-peripheral PC hardware Valve will be announcing soon. Most importantly, a new custom small form factor !mobo design featuring a single external power connection (external PSU only) for easy battery/hardline conversion, which they'll also be releasing specs for in trying to establish a standard. Also a proprietary quick-mount drive bay system aka cartridge port.
>>
>>380944839
It took 6 years to get Valyria Chronicles.

It took 7 years to get Bayonetta

It took 6 years to get Vanquish.

Getting a recent game is completely out of the question, let alone games where Sony literally owns content within then like Yakuza, Persona, or Project Diva.

>Well, for one thing, it's probably best not to think of it as a full-blown general purpose computer like what you're comparing it to. I don't think it's giving too much away by saying that it's meant to have a home in an entertainment center (although I don't personally want wood grain in my entertainment center). It also would be priced quite a bit less than a traditional computer would typically be. Like I said previously, if they can get the price/performance ratio they were targeting (I think it would be tough), it might have some interest in the type of niche that something like the Nvidia Shield TV occupies. Beyond that, it comes down, of course, to the value-adds (services, games, etc.) that Atari and their partner come up with. I have no idea what direction they went with that (or are planning to go with that). EDIT: Pretty positive that it wouldn't have changed to streaming of any type.

I unitonically want this to succeed.
Do we know when they will tell more?
But if they partner up with Valve then I will ignore it.
>>
>>380947189
I want it to succeed just so we have more competition in an otherwise locked down market.

Even if it's just a niche thing that people buy, I fucking despise Nintendo and their habit of releasing limited amounts to create artificial scarcity. Few stores I know of even stock Xboxes or PS4s unless you go to a big box store. So why not have something else on the shelves for a change?
