It ruined the unique gamplay of characters that the previous games were known for. The materia system could have been good but it was mostly just a time sync where very few were actually needed. The plot was boring after Midgar but also started the trend of Final Fantasy being science fantasy games which is fucking hard to do right. People either like it because it was the first game they played with FMVs or it was their first RPG. At least Tifa's tits were huge.

Overrated is usually pretty retarded to prove especially if you are going for the top of the list. Disliking something everyone else does won't automatically make it overrated. I don't even think you are qualified to try and call something overrated if you didn't play it when it came out since you have a warped perspective of what games were like. Most "overrated" games stand the test of time too. If I had to say one game which didn't deserve any of its praise at all points of its life? Probably going to have to go with World of Warcraft. It shook up the MMO scene but for the worse. Alot of its initial popularity stemmed from Blizzard's pull and then it was the snowball effect. The concept of community driven conflict from MUDS and MMOs were gone in favor of a much more competent Everquest style of game that had less to do with the players interacting as much as the players doing stuff the game presented. This is fine for some people but as every game started to focus more on that aspect and the world of world of warcraft became less and less important, it started to feel like just another game that has an idle server inbetween matchmaking. This feeling was always there though less prevalent than today and its high praise lead to its even higher popularity which lead to the death of all variety in MMOs.
