Afterburner Climax & 3D Afterburner II are perfect games. They are very simple arcade-y games, but their gameplay is perfection and the amount of options they have is tremendous; with Climax it's gameplay options and with 3DABII it's a combination of gameplay & visuals (you can emulate the look of every AB cabinet AND the gyroscopes in them).

God I fucking love Afterburner.

I'm going to say this right now to anybody saying fighting games: I love the genre, but the very nature of it makes it REALLY hard for one to be a true 10/10.

I'd say Tekken 7 is objectively the closest the genre has come, in that the game isn't just fun, but it has a fuckload of content and polish compared to pretty much everything else in the genre. Injustice 2 is close but the graphics and gameplay just aren't as good. DragonBall Fighter Z has potential to a 10/10 if the game has a decent amount of content. I'd personally throw UMvC3's name out there as well, but I know a lot of people will disagree.

Zero, Code Veronica, and even arguably 3 already proved that the formula was getting stale and people needed something different to shake things up.
You could argue that Capcom could have put the series on hold until the developers came up with new ideas and the fans longed for the return of Resident Evil; but the general public was already clamoring for another game, and Capcom just complied with a great game with good level design, and fun and innovative gameplay.

Zero was bringing certain things to full circle. It wasn't good, it was mediocre. It felt like a spin-off, anyways. It was arguably fan-service to those that wanted to know what happened to Rebecca, the other female of STARS.
Code Veronica was mediocre because of having to be in the same two places twice, each with a different character. That was annoying. The settings themselves were boring. Antarctic lab... and a poorly portrayed prison. Alfred or whatever (antagonist and his sister) were uninteresting. Also, ants.
3 was interesting because it carried that same neat mutation of the Nemesis that they did with RE2. Also, not entirely same setting, but the similar areas of it were a little different and made you wonder exactly how much time had passed between RE2 and RE3 (until you look up references). Also, you got to shower the Nemesis with acid and watch him melt. There was something fascinating about watching him change with that. My only problems with RE3 is that Racoon City got nuked, which made it almost completely mandatory for a sequel to that to take place in a new zone (which led to shitty sequel RE4 and spin-off RE:CV). If I had done RE4, it would still take place in Racoon City, but in an adjacent location, right outside of the blast radius.
