What we know so far:

Atari is releasing the flashback 8 in September which means this is not a retrobox. From the threads last night it's probably going to be an actual console using pc components and no android arm shit. Somebody on Atariage says that they have an unannounced partner. The CEO is quoted as saying that this has been "years in the making" and that "we are back in the hardware business."

Atari was bought out in 2014 by a rich French investor and is trying to push the atari name back into relevancy hence the huge ad they have in the new blade runner movie. How powerful this console is supposed to be is complete speculation at this point. It's also worth noting that the ataribox reveal website has a tab for developers to inquire about making games for the platform and many people have received responses ranging from "yes, you guessed it right, this is something you can develop for" to "stay tuned for more news."

I think it's safe to say that one of the big reasons why Atari failed and Nintendo succeeded was because Nintendo learned from Disney and the breakfast cereal companies the importance of having characters who people associate your brands with. Atari's games were all abstract concepts that had no characters or story. There aren't really any iconic Atari characters. There's the paddle from pong, the shooty thing from Centipede, the claw from Tempest, the triangle space ship from Asteroids, etc. The characters who people generally associate with Atari are almost always ones that are from third party games published on the Atari 2600, like Q-bert and Pitfall Harry.
