City ruins, copied city, amusement park, and a superior desert area are better than anything in the original outside of the Aerie.

The opera boss, dual fight at the end, tutorial boss, Adam fights, Eve fight, the boss you have to fight in the dark, and the kaiju fight are better than anything in the original. The only good bosses in the original were the first junkyard one and the orb thing in the Aerie.

The first Nier is structured that you play through the game, play through half again with some new shit thrown in, and that's it. Automata has the initial playthrough, the second altered playthrough, the surprise third playthrough that's all-new, and a better final ending. Nier ending D is lazy and only makes sense for Replicant.

Characters in original Nier had virtually no depth aside from Kaine while the main duo of Automata actually has quite a fucking lot going on for them that your eye won't meet first time around. Even side characters are better for the most part. The only character Automata lacks compared to the original game is Weiss, though it's compensated by 042 who is doing his own thing.

First of all, Androids are already established to be able to "fall for" each other. That's nothing out of line for 2B.

Second of all, they establish in the game that S-models are highly volatile and curious, that's why 9S had to be terminated so many times. He was only acting according to his programming but it said programming was also damaging to the YorHa operation.

I played a Drakengard game a long time ago, but I didn't know it was made by the same person until I started Nier Automata. I see the two series get brought up together often. Are they connected in any important way or is there something else? I haven't played the other Drakengard games and I'm about to start the original Nier (yeah, >playing Automata before OG Nier, I'm a pleb, I know), and I was wondering if their connected since I'm still trying to understand some parts of Automata.

I agree that it's not necessary, but I would very much recommend playing Drakengard before Nier. That way you can catch all the throwbacks to the first game. I mean, the throwbacks aren't important, but they're neat and I feel you'd be missing out a fair bit by skipping the first.

It becomes clear why 2B was so relieved after Eve's death because she thought that everything is finally over and she will stop being forced to backstab 9S. You feel her desperation when 9S gets hurt, mostly while protecting her. You see those attempts to force him to quell his curiosity. Her sacrifice and message in flight unit becomes even more impactful because it's literally the first act of her own free will.

I think that without the "layered" structure of their relationships it would lose a lot of impact, though it certainly requires far more attention to details and attachment to characters to fully understand and feel it than your typical JRPG love story like Estelle/Joshua.

You do a bunch bonus missions (of varying quality) to get all the weapons and ultimately Ending E. That's the game offering the player something (as a game) to get the complete experience. It wasn't a perfect execution but it was something. Automata dosen't really offer that, it's just "play everything, again."
