How violent is too violent for you in a video game?
>>380874483
I don't think it's about violence but about suffering. Like your picture, you can see things blown to gore and smithereens all day but if something is still alive and in misery that's where there is more emotion to it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyskUorhheg
Looks cool. Someone's going to say it's edgy like they're being clever or something - guess what it's intended to be mildly edgy, horror is meant to be transgressive.
>>380874483
Probably really over the top scripted stuff like in Mortal combat or the shit in that Friday the 13th game
>>380874483
When we talk abOut killing children or pet animals
>>380874483
no idea actually, nothing in video games has really ever made me think "this is too violent". the closest thing that i can think of that kind of surprised me was how some of the executions were in mafia 3
Soldier of Fortune/FEAR/Fallout violent
Mario. I only play puzzle games.
>>380874483
When it's pointless and gratuitous. Your pic is just gore which gets silly in excess but ultimately the actual violence is but a simple swing of the sword, pretty tame. GTAV's torture scene is more "violent" than an entire Musou game despite no lethality in the former and potentially thousands of kills per stage (if you're really determined the "KO" counter caps out at 9999) in the latter.
>>380874483
sky's the limit no where's my copy of scorn
>>380875604
Oh I thought OP said how violent do you like your games. Well fuck
>>380875604
>FEAR
but nailing people to walls was the best part of the game
the enemies aren't even humans
>>380874483
That gif is too violent for me desu, just looks disgusting and edgy
>>380875452
It's fiction. Violence shouldn't be unequal without seeming political. Women, children, and animals should be treated like any other character in any game.
>>380874987
Still think its more about the level of suffering that can become cringey.
>>380875604
I actually remember playing SoF as a kid and thought it was a little too much for me at that time.
>>380874483
nothing has come close to this, not even killing floor 2
>>380874483
Manhunt gets really close sometimes
>>380874483
I have yet to encounter too violent, but I found too retarded in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Shooting a man in the foot shouldn't result in his head exploding.
I haven't seen a single video game that is too violent for me really, it's hard to imagine there would be such a thing. I disliked that hatred game that got a bit of attention and posted about multiple times because it just reeked of 12 year old edginess if that counts.
There is also this one game i've seen videos posted of, it's some pretty old 2d platformer where you play as a kid and the death scenes when you run into a monster or fuck up a jump are pretty brutal, i wouldn't say too violent but it's kind of unnerving i guess.
>>380874483
No such thing.
>>380876042
>I disliked that hatred game that got a bit of attention and posted about multiple times because it just reeked of 12 year old edginess if that counts.
The funniest thing was that the "violence" was just clever trailer editing to make it look more fucked up and shocking than it really was.
Seriously, as far as blood, gore and guts goes it was actually pretty tame.
>>380875856
is that Vivisector?
>>380874483
any kind of violence is fine, as long as there is no violence towards women.
For instance, you can torture a man to death and that is ok, but if you can shoot a woman then you've gone too far.
>>380874483
Why do you feel the right to spam your shitty game here every day? Buy some ads, you cock smoker.
>>380876310
Looks like SoF2
>>380874483
It just depends on how believable the violence is. Over the top hyper violence is fine, but when someone's screaming in pain over a knee bending the wrong way it irks me.
I can't really think of any games that do believable violence well though.
never too violent
>>380874987

>>380874483
To be honest I have a really strong stomach. I don't think there's such a thing as "too violent" for me.
Violence itself has no limit when it's fictional. The actual disturbing part of violence is the context behind it. There's a point where excess hyperviolence gets comedic and it comes sooner than most would think. Actual violence has little theatrics or gore, when that same level is fictional the real thing seems tame because you know it isn't real. Unless you're crazy and can't tell the difference.

>>380874483
Stop asking this fucking question already. Time and again you are told "no such thing" in regards to violence in games.
Not that I don't appreciate the hype for Blasphemous, but at least be up front about it. This faux "concern" shtick is fucking old already.
the new Quake was way, way too gross for no reason
the torture scenes in cod black ops and GTA feel forced for the teen market / fake controversy, considering how much work goes into creating the systems to support these things and how long they're relevant to the game
gore in rising storm/red orcestra is pretty awful and not implimented well, like limbs flying past you and chunks of bodies bouncing around isn't realistic at all but it's the best the Unreal engine can do
killing floor 2 insisted on realistic gore for no reason, but it doesn't bother me at all because I was quickly desensitised to it
I'm waiting for agony. That looks crazy as fuck
>>380874483
Honestly, Mortal Kombat's violence is pretty ridiculous. Especially MKX, the bone snapping, gory internal injuries...but then they just get right back up and start fighting again like they didn't just get their lungs impaled or whatever.
Basically just any kind of blatant, over the top violence gets tiresome.
>>380876513
>Not causing them to puke and then decapitating them to cause the puke to spew from the stump.
Whatever.
what's that game with the coffin thing that in the bad ending, the protagnist (an anime girl) gets stuck in it and tortured forever without end?
>>380876547
Looked it up and yeah that's pretty bad. Torture in general will be unsettling, especially in a hell context. Think that Demonocuba game. Didn't play it but it was disturbing to learn about
God of War is the most violence i could stand in a game, mostly because of the unjust suffering and how one sided the fights are.
>>380875253
This is a terrible trailer.
The gameplay looks like trash. All anyone seems to care about is the art style, which isn't even good.
Visual novels always take it way too far.

>>380883306
My niggah
I think that one scene from the Animatrix and that scene from Only God Forgives are some of the only things that have made me feel sick. Violence for violence's/gore's sake is one thing, that's just kinda silly, it's when you really push the pain/human suffering thing that it gets to me.
Special mention goes to describing the 9th-man's death in 999. 999 and VLR are the only games to give me a chill from atmosphere alone
>>380884023
Adventure games are even worse.
Pic related is the only game in the 15 years to legit give me nightmares multiple times.

Separating killing blow from Knockdown turns into really good design, when used in a effective manner.
>>380874483
absolutely nothing
I play SS13 and when a regular tactic to assassinate someone is to brutally kill someone, drag their bloody corpse into a dark maintenance tunnel, cut their head off, saw their brain out, and then do it a few more times to random innocents for fun, you don't really mind violence.
It's more about context and level of detail anyway. A game that accurately depicts cartel/ISIS violence with good graphics probably goes over the line.
>>380875839
>I actually remember playing SoF as a kid and thought it was a little too much for me at that time.
For me SoF didn't seemed that bad as a kid because it felt very cartoony. Enemies skipping around without a leg for a few seconds or wounds usually being just red stuff with a bone sticking out of it made it seem funny even.

>>380885628
Huh, guess I never made it that far. Maybe I'm just really desensitized to stuff at this point.
I mean, really? this is "disturbing"?
>>380885628
BD was one of those games where I felt the violence was too much. I like gore, generally, but it feels kind of stupid when those imps or barons fall on their knees and start yelling REALLY LOUDLY and blocking your shots. I don't know, just not what I expect from a game like Doom. Make them blow into meaty chunks, not turn into some weird fetish torture devices.
I like SoF1/2 gore.
>>380884685

Gore and uber violence are generally icing on the cake for me as far as video games go, I even feel like there's very little of it anymore even with stuff like Fallout Nu Doom etc.
Blood and guts have never bothered me, but I'd say the sound design in Manhunt 1/2 really got to me, made me feel a little gross.

I mean, that's REALLY effective sound design man.

>>380886063
No. That's a 2D mod.
Really bad example of violent suffering that triggers people.
>>380875680
Couldn't really see too much violence in what we saw of Scorn. Just structures made out of flesh.
The bomb extraction scene in mgsv:gz disgusted me a little but it wasn't "too violent"

Not really. There is one part where you can read the diary of a cannibal, but if you read it all the way to the end you lose your mind and eat your love interest.

Depends on the context. This game is cartoony. Brutal Doom is cartoony for me. Shit like Soldier of Fortune is over-the-top which makes it enjoyable.
When the game attempted slightly making it realistic, that's when it went a bit too far I think. Shit like how the context play out, the dialogues, the characters, the sounds, and how violent itself are what makes it unnerving.

Hyperviolence is meaningless precisely because of what it is - it is clearly into fictional territory and is viewed as such. The more subtle the violence (which generally means entering territory associated with torture) makes it far more disturbing because it becomes much closer to reality.
It is why the scene in resevoir dogs is brutal but say...Commando is far less so because of this detachment.
tl;dr less is more.
>>380874483
Basically anything that shows graphic dismemberment, body parts getting blown off, heads getting blown open, etc. It's okay if it happens once or twice in a game but if it happens over and over it kind of ruins things.
Keep in mind I'm not against these things existing, it's just that once I see it in a game I'm playing repeatedly it starts killing the enjoyment for me.

What are the most violent games in the history of gaming? I honestly don't think there is such a thing as "too much violence" in videogames, not because of le edgy kid, but because of what they are, videogames. It feels way too disconnected from reality, unlike movies, where actual humans are "shown"
>>380898149

Nope, killed in action. As for the gore: decals and little details (like messed up clothing, skin colour, face expression) are really underrated. "Subtle" gore is far better at instilling emotions, because it leaves no room for interpretation.
