Morrowind has that hard to pin down quality, that leads /v/ to cling on to TES, despite liking each subsequent game less and less. They hope that every new TES will live up to that wonky game from 2002.

The complaints there aren't wrong. But Oblivion makes up for it in atmosphere and general comfiness. Nobody who's played it for any length of time could hear Auriel's Ascension and not be flooded with memories of exploring the countryside.

Yes, the gameplay and world design are lacking compared to Morrowind and Skyrim, and I haven't played the Gothic games but it's probably a fair bet that they exceed it in those aspects too; most games do. But despite what /v/ will tell you there's a LOT more than those that go into making a good game, and the fact is that Oblivion is a game you can fucking live in, moreso than any other in my opinion.
