Something I always loved about the Silent Hill games (the good ones, at least) is that every location, each room and corner of the town, felt deliberately crafted and memorable even if they weren't plot-relevant or "setpiece" locations like the door in the elementary school, or the gallows in the prison. What are some sights and sounds from Silent Hill that stuck with you?
>>
>tfw wanted to play Silent Hill but already watched all the scary scenes compilation on youtube so there's no point

Because it's lazy copy and paste shit with irritating pointless barriers that force you to take the long way around making what should be a thirty second trip take 10 minutes.

I never got why people always say that was one of the scariest parts of the game. It was pretty boring.
>>
>>380865226

That's my point, it's so fucking shit.

I'm playing the game having a good time and then comes one of the worst sewer levels I've ever seen and it's terrible purely because the developers were incredibly lazy. It's an enormous shit stain on an otherwise pretty damn good game.

Obviously everything takes inspiration from somewhere, but that doesn't mean it's all overtly copied like in those Kindergarten cop pics.

it's worth playing but you'll be both sad and angry at its shittyness compared to the earlier games
>>
>>380867509
It's pretty good but expect one of those "bad on purpose" sort of experience in some parts of the game. Many people also say it's a pretty decent horror game but it's a departure from the styles of the previous games. The only way to know if you will like it is to try for yourself.

I think what's infinitely scarier than the bloody environments in silent hill, is the question "Who's blood is it?"

Is it from normal people who got stuck in the otherworld? Is it from people who were born in and always lived in the otherworld? What happened to them? Who knows.

I don't care about the fog effect, it still looks fine, but the sound is genuinely worse in the PC version.

Low poly to me works so well with horror. Something about the graphics are just unsettling, it looks like actual mad men made it. I want more horror games to look like SH1.
>>
Is the town abandoned or actually populated?
>>
>>380869819
afaik depends on the game. 1/3 it's populated by some cult, 2 it's just limbo or some shit
>>
>>380869621
This video is bogus though. The vanilla SH2 and Director's cut versions have different sounds for many things, like the gunshots for example. Yes, the PS2 version has better quality and echo, but the sounds are the same if you compare the PS2 director's cut vs PC director's cut.
>>
>>380869679
but it's 2017 and you know if they do low poly that it's on purpose and marketed towards you and then it feels forced
>>
>>380870093
But does a non-Director's Cut version exist for PC?
>>
>>380869819
It's left a bit in the air. It's supposed to make you feel like it was populated not long ago but everyone is gone not long after you arrive there.

There must be people living there. When characters mention the town they don't mention it being out of the ordinary (aside from Douglas in SH3 but he was probably talking about all the drug trafficking in the town he discovered when he was investigating Heather).
Also, Harry in SH1 is taking Cheryl to Silent Hill for vacation and Cybil goes to Silent Hill because the local police station couldn't be contacted.

The normal world environments of Silent Hill are based on urban exploration places while the otherworld is based on abandoned Soviet bases hence iron and industrial design everywhere.

But both Toyama and Masahiro Ito have said that it's not clear if the town is abandoned or not, so even if the town looks abandoned it wasn't really intended to look abandoned.

Many apartments are locked with iron bars and Heather stays in a hotel in Silent Hill itself remember, so there are people living there.

What does that have to do with anything? If you have any evidence for any of the games taking place in the 80's, go ahead and post.
It's more likely that the games aren't set in any particular time and "drift" through periods on a per-room basis. Unless that's what you mean, in which case, my apologies.

I was nine the first time I played through, I got frusterated at the piano and went downstairs for a drink.
My mom asked how the game was going, so I explained the puzzle, she came up with me and explained how to play piano.
So yeah, I guess I had help.

>Stealth in horror games was a mistake
Jesus Christ, can you be anymore of a retard? The stealth gameplay is ideal for a horror game, it means that the player character can be a regular person or even a little child, and not a walking one man army, which even the SH series is guilty of, and the sightjacking mechanic makes it literally perfect.

The first game is probably the best, everything is constructed with such a care and attention to detail and it's so unforgiving, you got a map but it doesn't indicate your current position, no sir, you have to orient yourself through landmarks, just moving from point A to point B is a major acomplishment and will make you feel like a fucking hero.

In Silent Hill 2, Mary says that Silent Hill is their "special place", which means that they went there at some point, it was a normal city and they had a good time. James is in his late 20's, so it couldn't have been too long ago. You could argue that we never are told exactly when SH2 happens, and it could be decades before SH1, but even so the town already looks decrepit when James explores it.

I don't think we are supposed to know the true nature of the town. I like to think that the foggy, abandoned version you see in the games is a different place entirely from the real world, like a domain created by the influence of the old gods that some people end up wandering into.

That's the stuff that always really spooked me, the very minor background implications that when you think about them, make no sense. It's just completely supernatural and fuck you, you don't get a reason or an answer. I mean, the blood everywhere, the rusting metal, the giant fans, it's a cold, harsh, filthy aesthetic meant to evoke hardness and suffering but the actual logistics of what the fuck any of it does is great, because none of it does anything. The morgue in SH2, those corpses are just corpses, they were never people, they're just remains, bags of meat and bones meant to exist as that and nothing more. It's so utterly fucking weird, I love all that stuff in Silent Hill. Yeah, it all looks very weird and creepy, but there's a totally inhuman weirdness just under it all.

In what way? Because the characters in SH don't come to a dead stop when you let go of up on the D-pad while running? If so, I suppose you're right, but it's because the RE games are more action than horror, and SH is more horror than action.
>>

Mount the ISOs of 2 & 3, and then run their installers like always.
The SH1 is a PS1 rip that you gotta emulate.
The "sh2proxy" is a all-in-one fix, that works as a no-cd crack as well. It is included in the pack.
If you use the NEW fix mentioned in the guide, you can use the sh2proxy's EXE as the no-cd crack!

In case you experience issues saving the game / not being able to edit the disp.ini, make sure the files aren't set to "Read Only", and run the game as Administrator.
If SH2 gets stuck in a black screen upon launch, close it and re-start it again.

SH2-4 do not support Xinput gamepads. Either use Xpadder, a DirectInput pad, or just play with KB+M.
You can now see some decent emulator settings for SH1 as well in the guide. If the image of the game does NOT fill your entire screen in fullscreen mode, check your plugin AND GPU control panel's image scaling settings!
Also give the new PGXP emulator a shot for a lot less wobbly PS1 graphics.

Actually the otherworld looks relatively functional because it was an actual functional place once.

The morgue in SH2 for example, implies that someone was in charge of dumping the bodies that come from those pipes into that hole that James jumps in. The prison was likely an execution site, so people would be executed and dumped into those pipes and then thrown into that hole. Silent Hill was probably filled with executions and sacrifices which is probably what made the otherworld such a screwed up place.

I can live with the headcanon that the otherworld is originally functional, but dislike your implication that real world events made it fucked up. I like it the other way around more, that the otherworld is a fundamentally fucked up place, but in essence much more abstract, and is seeping into the real world. Us real world people just shape it then into their personal hell. E.g. during the middle ages, the otherworld would have looked medieval rather than industrial, and before humans, it still existed, as some Lovecraftian dimension.

I feel like it gives the impression of functionality, but for instance, what do all those giant fans cool? Where do those pipes go, what do they feed or process or move? It's certainly influenced and innately connected to people and our world, but it isn't our world, it's an otherworld. I don't think it's quite Warhammer's warp which IS more or less shaped by human thought and emotion and action, Silent Hill's otherworld is unique, and as a horror game, it isn't supposed to make perfect sense. It looks like it does, but the logistics of all this colossal machinery and blood and rust and encrusted filth, the lingering corpses, unexplainable sounds, they don't quite add up. Under that very thin veneer of functionality is a hellish realm where nothing goes anywhere, filled with endless black voids and crawling with mindless abominations.

I was the same, SH4 seems to be 2spooky for me and I can't figure out why. I think it's because of the hub system. the blooper reel is great. You can tell everyone was having fun.

While I certainly enjoyed the heck out of SH3, what really bugged me when I played it is how there's no real chance to explore any larger "hub" area until what feels like 2/3 into the game.

It was really stretching my belief and patience thinking "Ok, after the subway the game will open up... Ok, I guess after the shopping district it will open up... the abandoned building?"

It was weird, because it felt really boxed in, especially after SH1 let you run around the town, and SH2, to a much lesser extent, did the same.

I admit I was really disappointed that the only part of Silent Hill you got to see was the SH2 part of town on the south part of the lake. I was really looking forward to Alchemillia, the school, etc. I guess it was a cost-saving decision but I was a little sad about it.

You should have informed yourself better, I'm afraid you ruined the game for yourself with these expectations. Horror games are almost never open world. It wouldn't make much sense anyway, since you are trying to get from A to B fast with all the horror monsters around you.

What's better is when you realize Toluca Prison doesn't exist. It was demolished and the Historical Society was built on top. James goes Full Batshit for a while and hallucinates the entire thing.

He probably just wandered around the lobby room for 2 hours gibbering random shit until he snapped out of it and walked outside.

Which actually makes me question, where the hell are all the people? I've played 1 and 2 only but SH is supposed to be a town with like 30 thousand-odd people. I understand there's moments of delusion like the Toluca Prison bit but are normal people still living there watching TV and having dinner in their homes, what?
>>
>>380888146

>>
>>380888146

>>
>>380887497
Imo there was some magic in linear nature of the game. It really felt like some hellish trip from start to end which Heather had to overcome and not just some adventure in town of Silent Hill.
>>
I am mad as fuck that Silent Hills was cancelled

I'm posting this in every SH thread I see
>>
>>380888146
what do you mean "ruined" the game? My expectations were set by playing SH1 and Sh2, going into 3. Which I even said I enjoyed. What disappointed me was being shuttled to one area to the next and not seeing the part of Silent Hill that was relevant to Heather, outside of Lakeside Amusement Park - and the church I guess?

My favorite horror games have a bit of openness about them - like SH1 and RE1. It makes them more fun to replay.

>>380888419
I guess. It makes the flow feel really different. I was honestly getting a bit fatigued by the time you finally reach the shitty apartment building you call home, because it never felt like you had breathing room for a huge chunk of the game. It was as if there was no down-time between areas.

While SH4 did this too, it didn't bother all that much, because it was sooooooo radically different in its setup that it didn't feel as jarring, if that makes sense. I could sorta compartmentalize the experience in a way that I didn't for SH3. That doesn't make SH4 the better game (far from it, lol), but it felt a little more natural tackling one area at a time.
>>
>>380888376

I feel you anon. To think what could have been. It could have made Silent Hill a proper blockbuster title again as opposed to what it currently is, a series with the trajectory of something like A Nightmare on Elm Street... endless poor to average sequels. Resident Evil 7 did it right, but I expected Kojima to give the whole game an overhaul with free reign. The PT demo was terrifying.

It's hard to say what happened to the people. Some say SH is actually abandoned because of economical reasons (tourist industry decline, the cult aggressively pushing out people not part of their religion) while others say it's just temporal displacement while the dark forces of Silent Hill are at work.

The labyrinth in 2 felt very genuinely creepy and was filled with tension. I think the absolute scariest part of the real SH games was the fight at the end of the amusement park in 3. For some reason that unsettled me like nothing else.

So essentially it could be that the games take place in a "pocket dimension" that inhabit the same space but not at the same time? So while James is faffing about talking to himself while in the fetal position at the historical Society lobby in his "dimension", it's a regular day with people in there doing paperwork and drinking coffee in the real world?
>>
>>380888451
Almost happy about it. Jump scares are not fucking SH. They should do a new franchise in the vein of PT
>>
>>380889037
You should play SH1! I don't know how much of an impact it will have once you've played the more refined entries, but it was quite the experience for me 1.5 years ago when I decided to play through the 4 games in sequence. It is really good at giving you the feeling of being in a twisted nightmare: playing blind, nothing makes sense, and things happen without warning. It feels as if the game changes the rules on you as you play, making it feel very unsettling.

The open map also adds to some of the scare-factor: outside of having areas that are missable (but potentially important, equipment-wise or story-wise), the fact of running through huge stretches of open street, without knowing what's out in the fog, is its own type of scariness.

>>380889874
That was the hardest boss in the game, for me. The environment was really freaky-looking, but little miss dopple ganger was pretty good at riddling my sorry ass with dakka.

While Konami is a shit company nowadays, and we'll absolutely never hear the full story about what happened to V, part of that blame has to rest on Kojima. An astronomical budget that would make other devs envious and just taking too long to complete. That coupled with a terrible parent company helped fuck up what we all thought would be game of the generation.
>>
>>380875918
I did use a guide when I played it the first time when I was a kid but I had forgotten it after 16~ years and I played it again. I still don't know very little about shakespeare or anything of the sort, but I read the clue and it made sense to me so I didn't look it up.

It's actually not that difficult. Draw the piano on a piece of paper and mark the broken keys you're supposed to press along with their colour.

First clue are the birds themselves. Pelican, Dove, Swan are white, Crow and Raven are black.

Pelican's first in the list and it's greedy, gets first dibs, so first white key, left to right. Then dove "flying as far as he could" so last white key. Then the Raven comes in "flying higher than the dove", so the black key above the dove. Fourth is the Swan (white) resting next to another bird. There's only 1 white key left so you hit that one. Finally, the crow "comes quickly to a stop", so the first black key and the only one that's left.

Done. I felt like a fucking boss figuring it out by myself.

SH1: The School was hands down the spookiest place in probably all of Silent Hill. Getting to the nightmare school was a mindfuck in itself, coupled with the fact that you're not lugging around the best weapons or that much medical supplies, made it one of the most intense moments in the game, along with fighting with a boss that can kill you instantly if you're not careful.

SH2: The prison stuck with me the most, mostly due to how surreal it was getting into it, plus the weird shit in it like the invisible prisoners, the gallows and the horse cries.

>the way he was so nonchalant about everything around him was great though. Here he is in a nightmare world filled with dinos and doggos and he is like

This is what makes him a cool character. He has business with the cult and is probably used to seeing the gory imagery, so for him it's not really a big deal. If i was in his placed, i would just get shocked with the fact that the cult's stuff is actually working, although SH0 fucks with the lore and makes Kaufmann directly involved with the cult's rituals, which means he would feel at home in the otherworld.

Why not? You literally look through the enemies eyes, analyze their positions and movement patterns before making your move, you can even see where you are relative to them.
When it comes to making places seem real its probably even better than SH, specially with all the interactivity, only problem is that the locations aren't very familiar to western audiences.

I feel the same way about SH3. The game feels really linear. In SH1 and SH2, the player has the feeling of going to a hub after every otherworld part, while in SH3 it feels like you're just advancing through levels.

I thought that after the church part, the game was going to open up and let the player explore all of Silent Hill, but it ends at the church, which left me pretty shocked. There was no sense of "journey" like SH1's sewer part or SH2's boat ride, you just walk a little bit and suddenly you're at the amusement park, then the church and the end. I think Team Silent was tight on time and budget.

Wat, the only game that you can sincerely claim to be open is the first one, also I don't get how's there less sense of journey unless you actively trying to ignore it, it has by far the most varied scenarios, how can a boat ride through indistinct fog be more conducive to a feel of journey than that?

Yeah, but at the same time it made some puzzles awfully obscure, because it was hard to tell exactly what you needed to do in one level to complete puzzles in another level, they solved this particular issue in the second game though with more clear indications of which levels were linked in this way.

Not the prison itself, no. It was all torn down and the small-ish Historical Society building is what's left. There's no real "museum" past a small room with stuff and portraits. Everything starting from the giant tunnel is a delusion.
>>
Gotta love Silent Hill Homecoming's ending system.

You can make 2 sets of choices in the game, 3 of the endings make sense depending on what you pick. They had one left over so they decided to make it the UFO ending.

You can literally get the UFO ending by making some unlucky (not even illogical) choices. I'd have been so pissed if I'd picked the 'wrong' things.

>>
>>380896528
>Toluca Prison doesn't exist anymore.

That's the thing. As soon James walks through that hole on the wall of the historical society, he enters a physical realm where a "snapshot" of the prison and the Wiltse mine exist, that place is also "nowhere" since it shows Angela's memory of her father as well. The player can see a picture of the prison and the Wiltse mine before actually exploring them, so James is basically physically exploring the history of the historical society.

SH1-3 are extremely ambiguous about this and the denizens of Silent Hill. Cybil went to Silent Hill because the local SH police department wasn't communicating, which means something happened to the real police department, also the hospital staff is infected with some sort of parasite and later on the in the game Cybil gets infected with the parasite as well, and she is completely unrelated to Alessa or Silent Hill.

Silent hill is a tourist resort. People come to see the lake and it's really popular. If you're not fucked up then it's just a normal town with an active tourism trade. But if you're a fucked up you slip between the cracks and end up in the other world due to the cult's influence bringing supernatural power.

It's never confirmed what is the trigger to slip between the worlds only that people with troubled pasts do so. That's why Laura who is innocent doesn't experience anything but the other characters do. They're fucked up history is being expressed and they each see their own unique nightmare world. We don't even know if you can leave the place if it sucks you in, 4 mentions James is still missing and Harry was in someone else's hell and dismantled it for them.

You go the opposite of dark and cramped. It's always bright, maybe a little too bright, hard to see. No closed buildings, only shells of buildings, windows and doors removed. Lots of wide open places with no cover. You need to give the impression that you're constantly exposed and in the open with nowhere to run and hide, there are no shadows to hide in, you can always be seen no matter where you are. I'm surprised no one's ever tried to play with agoraphobia, plenty of claustrophobic horror, but to me, it's just as scary finding yourself in an open field that stretches into the distance with literally nowhere to hide and it doesn't matter how fast or far you run.

It'd be a labyrinthine place, but most doors can't be opened and those that do would seal up behind me. There wouldn't be any monsters, but a lot of dreadful vermin creatures. Many objects reappear, and the architecture and floor plans seem to repeat themselves but in entirely different places.

It's a very interesting look that I like a lot more than generic super model ladies.

>At least in SH1, the Otherworld was just Samael invanding this world and bringing "darkness" with him
Nope. Rather, it was Alessa's psychic powers first manifesting a thing that would be considered a "god" or "demon" by other people (which she herself hated and feared), which again fed her nightmares and pushed out non voluntary mental projections.

"Samael", "incubus", etc, are just names different sources within the games' lore give this phenomenon.

>just the fact that you don't need to know what the hell is happening ideally.
There's plenty of evidence and plain out hard statements within the games that have allowed us to construct a fairly solid foundation on how the town's powers work.

In the most barebones way of putting it:
-the "town's power" = projector
-people's psyche = film
-our world = the canvas

In SH1 and 4, you experience strong, dominating "reality" of external source. In 2-3, you experience a first-hand "reality", with small glimpses to others'.

Wikis, SH forum, and the one source nu-/v/ hates: TwinPerfect's TRSHE videos.

One thing I've learned about Team Silent already years ago is that they never did things "good enough" or "for the lulz". Even their western co-workers / VA cast have described them as total workaholics and detail maniacs.

If you've somehow not yet seen the Making Of -videos of the OG SH-games, check 'em out ASAP. They should be uploaded on YT nowadays.
