All the later versions opt for a realism design, and it looks worse. Rather bland, boring worlds.

The limitations at the time had a lot to do with it iirc. Originally Cloud was going to have slicked-back black hair as a sort of counterpoint to Sephiroth's flowing white/gray hair, but designers thought something more prominent would depict him better in the low-poly field models.

It's stupid how insistent SE is in faithfully adapting Nomura's hairstyles from his 2D art, while trying to make every single other aspect realistic.

Nomura's perfect spiky hair stuff looks great when they're going for cartoony like KH, or CG anime like PSP FF, but it looks incredibly dumb when they're going for hyper-realistic.

I can only hope the art direction in the remake is anywhere close to how good the original's was.

I prefer how the older version's cutscenes looked. They dealt with the limitations of late 90s CGI and still hold up (at least in my opinion, I know the animations are a little stiff).

We've seen barely any footage, and what it's based on isn't the best example of FF7's great art design, but I'll be disappointed if the rest of the cutscenes in Midgar are that gloomy and dark.

I just HOPE they don't fuck this up. It's one of my favourite games of all time. However, it very clearly is a product of the 90s and I don't think it'll work outside of that time period. Since Square Enix are making alterations to the story since it's being released episodically (seriously, what the fuck? It's okay with Hitman but FF7's plot is all about urgency. Having an extended wait between being able to continue the story completely fucks that up) does show that they don't care about preserving FF7 as it was released in 1997.

I just hate that the more I find out about the Remake, the more I dislike it.
