G.U handled his character great, the only bad thing about it was the eventual reveal not really being all that big. In terms of him as a character, it made complete sense. Roots was shit, but that's because they decided to dedicate the second half of it to following Tabby doing absolutely nothing. G.U was great regardless of what IMOQ nostalgiafags like to claim.
Legend of the Twilight Bracelet is a love letter to the franchise itself, if you can't appreciate that then I highly doubt you even read the novels and shit which it actually gave some proper closure to. It didn't feature a complex plot or anything, but it was far from anything offensive.

So I'm a bit over five hours into .hack//infection. Is there any reason that like half of my attacks miss? Also, any cool protips? Should I bother with trading? Having all skills tied to equipment feels a bit cumbersome honestly.

Nobody is claiming that Legend of the Twilight is better than Sign. Legend of the Twilight did what it was supposed to do to close out R:1, but was ultimately not that interesting when it came to the main story itself. IMOQ does a better job than G.U by alot to make the world feel more real, but the characters themselves are pretty damn flat in terms of actual development. Sure it's there, but it's never really anything extraordinary. IMOQ and G.U very clearly have entirely different goals, they've even gone out of their way to say that they wanted there to be a larger focus of character drama in it. To compare the two in terms of writing means either being completely unfair to one or the other, or comparing entirely different parts of the game.

The thing people fail to realize and maybe where .hack has an in versus SAO is that unlike SAO which people really seem to think is a franchise about being trapped in an MMO where you can die ala .hack cause of the misleading advertising for the first season of the anime (which somehow still stuck with people) it's not, it's a harem romp series much like Accel World where the OP MC goes out and fights some villain of the arc, meets some dumb waifu with a bland moe design, saves her ass and adds her to his harem fanclub.

Man I miss when more characters were allowed to have distinct shading and designs and be of all walks and ages in games. Now because of NEET's in Japan's ultra one dimensional taste almost everything has to have characters that are low detail same face pretty boys or pretty girls and shading is non-existent. Following common tropes doesn't make them bad characters, it makes them identifiable ones. The characters in IMOQ were pretty flat. The type of interactions you have with them helped to build atmosphere, but as far as actually developing them and making them into interesting characters, it really didn't compare in the slightest to G.U which basically elaborated and built upon the relationships in every aspect. I really cannot see how anyone would claim that IMOQ is stronger in the character department unless they're mistakening what the method of interaction brings as characters being strong, which is inarguably more laughable.
