i only played the gamercube one so i'm sure the rest are hot garbage

Every iteration fixes general mechanics, adds new features and content, and generally improves quality of life issues while also draining the charm out of the series.

Either go for the original on Gamecube or New Leaf. The original doesn't have as much to do as New Leaf and your freedom is on the shorter side but one could argue it's more "comfy", also the the dialogue & personality in the original for the animal villagers are the best in the series in my opinion (granted I haven't played much of City Folk and never touched Wild World). New Leaf gives you a lot to do though since you're Mayor in that game, you can customize how the outside area looks and there are more events, things to collect when it comes to Fish, Bugs, Fossils & etc. in the game compared to the original. At the end of the day it doesn't matter much on which one you pick, they all have their strong points.

Its just a relaxing game series that has 30 minutes to an hour's worth of new content a day since it operates on a real time calender, nothing groundbreaking but nice to play once in a while. As for best games, either get New Leaf on 3DS or emulate it on GC if you're unsure about it.

GC and New Leaf are both pretty good and my favourites. Wild World is not bad either, but City Folk is pretty mediocre

City folk has extremely limited dialogue where everyone compares emotions with food. Both ww and cf look like hot garbage.

GCN had best dialogue because attention spans could read more than 3 lines at a time in the early 2000s. Also didn't t need to be toned down because someone's feelings got hurt.
