Why does the Psychonauts aesthetic work anyway? It's kind of horribly ugly, but ti doesn't feel like that when it's in motion.

Like any other form of basic abstraction and cartoony aesthetics? It just exaggerates some aspects and simplifies others, in this case to create combination of childish, cartoony aesthetics with a bit of grotesque or ugly twist to it. It's not exactly new or strange thing in animation.
