I like the shift to a STALKER-like world layout, but it looks like there's going to be excessive dialogue and character interaction that undermines any feeling of isolation. I don't have that much hope for it, really.

Only played the first, but the dialogue did feel too abundant at times. Characters didn't feel like they had the same kind of detachment from everyone and everything else like they did in STALKER which was really a big part of the atmosphere.

Also is it true that 2035 references Last Light and technically makes it canon?

It's almost as if Metro is trying to create a new world in which people have to live in and are engaged in, not a blasted wasteland shithole cancer that people try to escape.

I fucking hate you STALKER faggots who think everything should imitate your shitty 2000s era games that were so fucking great they never got sequels.

The first one was just forgettable, then 2034 and 2035 went full retard with illuminati shit and how the war was still going on instead of just sticking to people surviving in the underground.

For one thing I don't think he had nearly as much involvement in Metro as he's having with Exodus. Even beyond that, though, plot structure has never been his strongest suit as a writer. Setting and atmosphere have always been where he's strongest.

L-O-FUCKING-L

Metro is a far, far more politically charged fictional universe than anything Bioware or Naughty Dog have put out in years.

It's a deconstruction of the Russian identity via each faction being representative of a different facet of Rusian politics.

>The Fourth Reich is representative of Russia's Nazi groups over the last several decades
>Hanza represents the explosion of Capitalism after the fall of the USSR
>The Red Line represents the Soviet apologists who still advocate for it

You get the picture.

The Red Line's general is most certainly a morally compromised person who acts as a significant antagonist throughout the game, but the level of sheer evil shown by the Nazis just isn't matched by the Red Lines' antagonism towards the Rangers.

>This is, however, an example of the games' being explicitly political down to their forefront.
Yeah, I guess. If you want to call a short remark about Nazis being batshit political then I can't say you're wrong because it is - I admit that.

The crux of my objection is that there are levels of being political. "Nazis are bad" is a relatively noncontroversial statement compared to some of the politics being injected into Western games.

I think we're on different sides of the same page here.
>>
>>380852689

Wait, I think I see where you're coming from: I think you're viewing it through a lens of Western politics, while I'm trying to view it through the lens of Russian politics. I'm far, far from right-leaning myself, but when viewing a political work which came out of a conservative culture, I try to analyze from within that culture's lens. In this case, since modern Nazis aren't as universally detested in Russia as they are in the West, I interpret it as the author saying "why AREN'T we detesting them just as much?"
>>
>>380853008
I'm aware of Russia's Nazi problem but I think even today, even in Russia, "Nazis are bad" is relatively uncontroversial.

I've never been to Russia so I could be wrong, but that is my impression.
>>
>>380853204

Saying that the German Nazis were bad is expected, but people don't really take it as out of the ordinary to see someone with a swastika proclaiming that non-whites should be deported or camp'd
>>
>>380847374
I guess a more open but still very story-oriented game with a lot of interactive cutscenes like listening to/following NPC, and invisible walls or things that lead to death everywhere when you try to explore too far like ravines, radiations, toxic waters. I don't think we should expect a Stalker-like.

I'm ok with it if it's only a classic METRO game where things happen mainly outside of the tunnels and without time limit. They know how to do good linearity and suddenly going full open-world can be a bad idea.

Nope. It's been confirmed that it's not open world and is separated by levels. We're getting exactly what we want.

It's not just Ubisoft, Rockstar and GTA V are perfect examples of shitty OW designs

Is it level based but with more open areas or open ended like Metroid games?

Because actually I like the second one more. And 4A already hinted that they're making an open world game. I thought that it's gonna be like Stalker.

Bethesda as well

It looks like exactly what I want from a sequel. 2033 was the most compelling story driven FPS I played since Half Life 2 and Last Light was a great refinement of the original's jankiness. Moving beyond the Metro is an exciting step to take and the outdoor areas look gorgeous. I hope they bring back a bit more of 2033's survival horror atmosphere but it just looks like it'll be another solid Metro game overall. Probably the most pleasant surprise at E3 for me. I think it'll still be much more focused than STALKER, but I love both series so I'm curious to see what a hybrid of both might look like.

The former, not the later.

They're making it more open, as in, bigger levels. It's not open world.

>CoP is trash
It fixed most of the problems of SotC.
It removed the need of having to go through 3 loading screens just to sell your stuff. And the devs fucking learned that shitty starting weapons are not fun (screw SotC and it's beginning)
Although I admit that the maps were lacking locations (Pripyat is disappointing once you find out that there's nothing to do)

Ah that's quite disappointing. Still, I liked both games already, couldn't be worse

GTA has always been open-world though.

I'll give you Clear Sky but some tasteless bitches are just plain ungrateful for good games

Clear to say you've never played previous games or read the books. Go end yourself

Because Stalker is one of the only good ones.
And it's likely because it's not really open-world. CoP was a good game but you could already see the classic open-world problems with the bigger maps, it felt empty and boring at times.

Open-worlds are almost always mediocre and it's even worse outside of the RPG genre. I wouldn't like a METRO game where I explore empty wastelands for hours with the occasional fight with a group of 5 small mutants or a big bullet spongy one.

I mean they don't have space battles or giant laser guns or witty Marvel quips, if that's what you're looking for.

They're tight, well-made standard FPS games mixed with survival horror and a unique moral spin on post-apocalyptic/first contact stories. They're great games and they fill the void left by Half Life for a lot of people, albeit with more horror and less puzzle solving.
