The first MGS game I played (I think it might have been 4) I had very little idea of what the series was about. I'd never owned Sony consoles so it went totally over my head and I honestly thought they were talking about memes for a while. Didn't appreciate the games subtext at all.

Japanese game development has basically become the mobile games capital of the world.

So I don't think anyone really has much of a choice. Unless you want to pay the 44th Mario and Zelda games, JRPGs that have been dumbed down and done to death or From Software's clunky shitbombs your options are limited.
