I'm not talking about Nintendo, their stuff feels very different.
In the 90s when I was playing a JRPG, I felt like I could get engaged in the story and understand what was going on. While things were still a bit crazy, they at least felt grounded in reality and I could like some of the characters. As gaming has evolved though the story telling has as well, but Japanese games never feel like they've grown up. I'm constantly thinking "WHAT IS GOING ON? THIS STORY IS STUPID AND MAKES NO SENSE!" or I'm cringing at the horrible voice acting and just how ever line is delivering in this cheesy cliche way where every sentence is so melodramatic.
I'm watching FF15 stuff and they're fighting up walls, falling from great heights without getting injured and every scene has so much crap crammed in that I cannot take what is going on any more. Why is the story? Who is the main character? Who is the villain? Seems like they cannot settle on one thing, so we have several of each. Why are all the characters so unlikable? Why do they have to look like they come off some hipster emo catwalk?
I don't understand how any one can like any of this crap any more. It all feels so far removed from the days of FF6 where things actually made sense and I could like characters and follow the story. Why I liked the first part of Ni No Kuni (I never played on because my PS3 died) as it just felt normal, I could understand the character motivations, they weren't saying stupid things and it had a plot that made sense. I wasn't fighting up the sides of buildings, every combat scene wasn't some epic world shattering thing where all this flashy shit was going. It felt like the first JRPG in over a decade that I could get into.
If it isnt all this crazy crap then it is weird pervy stuff like Bayonetta 2: do I really need to see up close crotch shots all the time? I love porn like any other guy, but my god that game is just sad.

Because current weeb & otaku culture requires the game to constantly fellate the player or they get pissed. You never noticed how many characters get labeled an asshole because they committed the crime of disagreeing with the player that one time? Or how the most popular waifus are the ones that blatantly tell the player they want to be impregnated by them?
When everyone sucks the player's dick it kills most of the conflict which any good story relies on. It's getting bad in WRPGs too.

Video games are closer to board games than movies. Other than the crappiest of Americrap, board games know that they exist to be games, and not some sort of novel. They know that the stories told in board games have to either be told through their mechanics, or told between players.

90's JRPG's were usually translated by Woolsie and his gang. They would re-write games to make them palatable to Western audience. I remember FF6 had Beavis and Butthead NPC's.
Now JRPG's go for a translation that's closer to grain. Because the writing is based on Japanese values and culture, it feels very at home to them, the same way 90 JRPG's did to you.
