Fuck this "System Shock 2 music is bad" meme that people parrot. It fits the mood of the game perfectly and provides a hell of a lot of atmosphere in some areas of the game. Eric Brosius is a musical genius.

Also System Shock 2 is nowhere near a 10/10 anyway, the last 1/4 of the game is unfinished, terrible paced and was subject to rushed development. The game completely falls apart towards the end.

It also has some of the worst balance in an FPRPG feigning as "le RPG gameplay choices", namely the standard weapons being overpowered as fuck and energy/heavy/exotic all taking a back seat to the assault rifle and shotgun. The only weapon outside of standard that actually poses a threat to their dominance is the Grenade Launcher and that's because if you upgrade it it's bugged to give +100% damage instead of +10% damage.

System Shock 1 is a much better designed game with a more coherent structure than System Shock 2, with the only downfall being its default (pre-enhanced edition/mouselook mod) control scheme.

Agreed with OP though, Blood is possibly the best singleplayer FPS (non-hybrid) game of all time.

Yep, I too think Postal 2 is a masterpiece somehow. It's odd, since I totally admit its design is a mess and the shooter elements are kinda bad. It's like a Harmony Korine movie.

I literally finished playing this game yesterday and it was really good. I wouldn't say it was a 10/10 though but man it was fun.

I fucking wish I played this as a kid. If I played this as a kid back in 2003, it definitely would have been a 10/10 for me. I think so many games have done the NPC thing to death now (especially COD, which popularized the whole thing and came out in the same year as Freedom Fighters) that a lot of the novelty of having NPC fighters in a game was dulled, since it's now normal. But I remember being a kid and playing Medal of Honor Underground and being amazed there were NPC soldiers helping me, and then even more in Medal of Honor Allied Assault, but it was still only for a few missions. So for Freedom Fighters to have no only NPC's, but controllable ones you could order around like an RTS. It truly was ahead of it's time and amazing. It was still cool having your own squad and then seeing it grow to a 12 man platoon by the end of the game too. Fuck I wish I played this as a kid in 2003 to experience it's impact properly, and not playing it for the first time in 2017 like I just did. Still worth it though. Definitely at least an 8 right now. Why didn't this get a sequel?

Ordering around NPCs in a shooter or action game was not "ahead of its time" in 2003. Older shooters like SWAT 3 and Ghost Recon 1 have much more complex AI and level design and games like Battlezone 1998 and Hostile Waters are true shooter/RTS hybrids.

It fits that part of the game. The crew of the ship is still in the process of getting killed and you wake up in the middle of complete chaos, so intense music is appropriate.

The soundtrack becomes more ominous as your progress; things quiet down as the Many establish full control of the ship and you start to become the last survivor on board.
