About to start Metro 2033 for the first time, not Redux since /v/ told me it's shit.
What should I know before going in, and what difficulty should I play?
Also Metro thread I guess
ranger easy, i would say hardcore but it disables the hud and you won't know the prompts on a 1st playthrough
have fun

This also if you fall in love with it like I did the game diverges from the book making it worth a read.
Also what's wrong with the redux?

I was told that while some graphical improvements are made, it also fucks up a lot of the balance, and also removes a lot of the neat TECHNOLOGY moments

Well that's lame. Enjoy your playthough op it's a great game. Use throwing knives whenever possible it's a fun way to play
Redux is fine. /v/ is full of contrarian shits trying to be hip but autism kicks in.
Don't worry about saving expensive ammo, you're going to find the weapons you can buy with it from enemies anyway.

I just realized that in redux they completely removed scattered glass to make the stealth section easier
also, no bayonet on Shambler
