Because that's exactly what it does. Smoking makes you look cool. In the 1900s smoking was marketed as the cool thing to do. Nowadays it's the opposite, but that is still present in video games and other media, where they still use that same marketing ability and apply it to different characters.

Its possible its one way/the other or some combination of both.

Younger people over time see smoking as less and less cool. Which is why I'm inclined to believe this is more cultural. I saw this statistically correlated in a study once but I'm too lazy to find it and I'm sure no one cares.

As a smoker I can say that it isn't cool, I only do it to calm myself down a few times a day. Or if I'm drinking. Trying to quit though, not because it will kill me but cause I can do shit more effectively as a non-smoker. Now I just get exhausted too easily compared to what used to be before starting this unhealthy waste of money habit.
