I wish mario's default runspeed was a little faster.
It's a little annoying to have to dive flip over and over again to cover ground in any reasonable timeframe.
Also I could have done without getting booted out of a level for each star collected.

I blew through, through every other star in two days, having a blast; I forgot how well it holds up

but FUCK this carpet shit FUCK it all
I know I can platform my way around them, but the instant death is just too fucking much

I recently played it for myself and found it slightly above mediocre.
I thought the mission set pieces were fun at times, but shit like collecting coins and walking over a number of secret spots sucked.
The controls were nice at the time but I swear mario walks forward just a tad before he does a u-turn and it makes me walk off cliffs like a dumbass.
meh camera.
some missions are also cryptic.
But it was still pretty fun overall, I just would never go back to it.

Banjo is far superior

diving while running is what I actually dream of when I'm not playing the game. That and climbing and jumping to and from trees.

God tier mechanics. Possibly the best I've ever seen.

The real issue is his walk to run ratio being off, making those tight spots harder to navigate.

I was head over heels addicted to mario 64. It blew my mind how immersive the graphics were. Pilotwings 64 and starfox 64 were great too.

I dont understand how people enjoy that game. The controls are so fucking loose and slow, the whole game is just collecting those fucking stars one at a fucking time. And graphically the game is a nightmare, FF7-tier at best. I just dont get how anyone can like that shit.

I don't even think I could read when I first played it and I figured it out.

It is an amazing game. This game melds platforming with exploration in a 3D enviroment perfectly. Most games were just 3D platformers, others just exploration, Super Mario 64 made both and made it good.
