They have way, way more commuters than we do. They also tend to head out earlier than we do and get home later than we do. I went to middle school in Taiwan for a while, which borrows heavily from Japanese culture, and we were up by 6am and got home at 7pm.

Less time spent at home = more necessity for mobile platforms. Only dirty NEET otakus spend all day at home gaming on PCs and consoles. Even people who "work from home" like freelancers rent out apartment offices nowadays. Portability is key for their lifestyle.
