Never.

Never. It is never acceptable to use unity to begin with.
>>
Boilerplate shit that should exist in the engine but doesn't for some reason, like on-the-fly path-finding and Steam integration.

when making the skybox and other locations that player cannot access but can only look at from a distance?

Unless it's to just buy pre-made models, I'd say it's usually fine.
Unity is alright (despite what people that have never used it professionally say) but it's pretty limited as it is and there are some amazing tools in there that are generally very affordable and will save you a ton of time and money.

The fact Unity doesn't have a node system for materials or even simple scripting still triggers me though, fucking hell.

Wasn't Unity supposed to integrate Shader Forge at some point? What happened to that?

For personal convenience while prototyping. Shouldn't waste time making prototype assets that wont be in the final game.

all node editors just suck.
is easier to simply code them.

Not happening, I'm an artist-fag. I just want easy code that works quickly so I can focus on trying to make things look less like shit. I can do some programming, to a certain degree, but shader stuff is way above my league.
