You know how combat works? Pressing Enter engages turn based mode which makes combat a lot more manageable.
You should find a guild that teaches Archery, pretty much any class can take that skill no problem.
Having a guy that can disarm traps is useful early on too.

The goblin fortress south of town is much easier to handle, but I'd recommend wandering in the wilderness around the town a bit first before you go dungeon crawling.
Pausing is recommend for melee combat, but shooting monsters and backpedaling is effective when using ranged attacks.
