How did Gamers stand playing on these for more than 12 minutes?

Gameplay was actually good

How did kids even know what good gameplay WAS pre-internet? How could you possibly have the perspective to make that call all by yourself?

I don't know about you, but when I was a kid my parents bought me 3 games I I just played them forever, regardless if they were "good" or not, & had no idea those games were considered bad until 2007 or so. You didn't really have a choice in the 90s, you played what was handed to you & didn't even think things like "but does this have good gameplay?". It never even crossed people's minds.
>>
>>380779751
We had GamePro and Nintendo Power to tell us.

Real answer? Rentals. Looking at all the games I own now and how many I just rented a few times, 8 year old me had the right idea.

Ignore the fact that people got what they had and didn't think for hours about why their situation was worse than some theoretical other person.

>>

I'm not. I'm genuinely asking. When I was a child, I liked objectively terrible games, and I wasn't able to gauge what had good gameplay and what didn't, because I had a much lower standards, back then.

The fact is, the best games of this era are miles ahead of the best games of the retro era, and nostalgia is the only thing that causes people to have such high regard for these archaic "masterpieces."

Eh, I had a big ass console-style RCA TV growing up that I played my Genesis and Playstation games on.

Keep in mind that older CRT's do degrade over time and the picture quality does get worse and worse, the CRT TV's you find today are nowhere near as good as when they were first new.
>>
>>380781226
This is dumb and I'm not even a 2000s baby; I was born in 1999. People in their 20s aren't automatically better posters, nor do they have better opinions.

Its definitely not nostalgia, I played Chrono Trigger for the first time back in 2009, I was blown away by it, and to this day I still regard it as the best game I've ever played.
Hell, I'm playing Grandia for the first time right now, and I'm enjoying it better than most of the shit that's come out in the past 5 years.

It was either take a risk by looking at porn on slow dial-up when no one was home on the family computer, jumping at every bump in the house and then nuking the history, printing sets or hoping a friend had raided his dad's nudie rag collection. >and I base this on absolutely nothing.

serious answer: for single player games it was obvious based on comparing the game to its contemporaries. For example the Sonic games by Sega were much more linear than the Mario games and had less complex controls and the power ups in Sonic, such as they were, didn't really alter how your controlled the character or played the game. The stages were poorly designed and had stupid shit like running into springs which sent you flying backwards through the air only to hit another and end up going forwards again or you'd run along and end up running vertically up or down a wall, giving an illusion of complexity or verticality to a level when really you were just holding forward 90% of the time in Sonic. Of course back when I was 6 or whatever I didnt have the words to express all this, but it was obvious to me on some level.

For multiplayer games, it was simply whatever was fun. Local multiplayer was a huge thing back then. As in, literally anyone who had a friend and was into gaming probably played local multiplayer in beat em ups, racing games, fighting games, Bomberman etc etc literally every single day back then. Competitive viability was of no concern, fun was paramount.

absolutely huge install base, being that nintendo and sega were the only horses in the race back then. and good marketing.

i'm not here to discuss your love of Sonic anyway. the example was given to illustrate how I, for one, would have worked out a subjective opinion based on my observations, about the quality of the gameplay in a given title back then.

Display lag. On a typical LCD you have something like 30ms of latency, whereas crt lag is measured in nanoseconds. Of course the game's engine and the hardware used to play it still has shitloads of lag, but you might as well reduce what you can.
>>
>>380799926
Modern flat panels have a bunch of processing to clean up broadcast TV signals, which adds significant input lag.

30ms input lag is considered outstanding for a "dedicated gaming mode", most TVs are 60 or even 100+ ms

Fuck me I was spoiled. When I was 8 I had a PC in my room with dial-up and we had two phone lines so it was really easy for me to use it constantly, and back in the late 90s the internet was the wild west...porn was so easy to come by it was ridiculous.

Even in 2001 we had broadband installed and using a wireless USB network thing I was able to connect to it. Most of my friends didn't even have internet, my school didn't have broadband, and I spent hours and hours browsing websites and downloading everything.

Nowadays kids have 80$ tablets that can access porn at any second, jesus. I can't even imagine what schools are like...even the iPhone was barely able to do online stuff back then, and I had an LG Voyager that had a pretty neat web browser on it I could use to avoid the school's firewall.

I used to as a kid. Hated the rounded corners that covered up the edges of games.

Later I bought a semi-flat Sony CRT with actual rectangular edges. Still had annoying aperture grille wires you could see going through the screen.

Modern HDTVs are so much better than CRT shit. Also much larger and cheaper.

I was talking about plasma, and it's inherent to the technology as opposed to the sample-and-hold technique of LCD/OLED. Perhaps it would have been OK at 120Hz or something, but considering they still don't make any TVs that are over 60Hz, I really doubt we would have seen any plasma like that now either, had it survived.

Plasma had a functional Hz of ~600, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

>they still don't make any TVs that are over 60Hz
Every TV is "3D Ready" because they really want to push the 3D meme on everyone and make bank on stupid glasses and overpriced blurays, and 3D TVs have a minimum of 120Hz, often pushing into 240Hz

>>
>>380779751
In a seriousness, when I was a kid and teen, the possibility of game developers not knowing what the fuck they're doing wasn't possible to me

if something sucked in a game, that's just the way it is bitch, nothing could have been done different

you just accept things the way they are, and without anything else to compare it to, you think it's okay

you know, I though that being stuck in place when aiming was a engine limitation in Resident Evil, couldn't conceive that that was voluntary design, same thing with the RNG in Diablo 2

>Plasma had a functional Hz of ~600, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.
That might have been the metric for the internal processing frequency or something but the fact remains that the plasmas that existed flickered and shimmered compared to LCD, that's what gave it superior motion resolution. It was a tradeoff, but personally I absolutely could not stand it.

>>380809397
>Every TV is "3D Ready" because they really want to push
3D TV is actually dead, I don't think there's a single 2017 model with that feature. But anyway those numbers were just input/internal processing frequencies, there have been no TVs capable of displaying more than 60Hz.
>>
I recently played Shadow Dancer on the Mega Drive for no real particular reason for the past few days.

It was a fun game that you really had to learn to get good at. I barely got to the third stage on my first playthrough, then my second got me to the fourth and then the third got me to the final boss (which is fucking bullshit holy hell)

I'd say if the game was fun and challenging you'd play it again and again without really getting pissed and would find it interesting.

It depends on a lot of stuff really, but the person and the game are usually the two main factors.

Also the cover art is very bad and says nothing of the game.
>>
>>380810695
>But anyway those numbers were just input/internal processing frequencies

The 3D would physically not display were that the case, it needs to display twice as many frames as usual because it's giving separate images for each eye

Fake Hz is absolutely a thing, but that was for "smoothing out" regular broadcast video with interpolated frames and is unrelated to 3D

>How did kids even know what good gameplay WAS pre-internet? How could you possibly have the perspective to make that call all by yourself?

1. Play the video-game (regardless of genre).
2. Form an opinion over the game (mechanics, design and story).
3. Move on to the next game.

It was an easier time back then.
>>
>>380810902
I never cared about 3D so I'm not super-knowledgeable when it comes to that, but most 3D stuff was made for movies at 24Hz so double that would still fit in 60Hz. Plus the resolution is generally reduced in 3D mode so maybe that did something. Fact remains there are no TVs capable of displaying a normal, native resolution image at anything higher than 60Hz.
>>
>>380779464

This depends, 3d Tvs that used passive 3d would display 2 images interlaced at once, effectively reducing your horizontal resolution by half. Active 3d works by displaying alternating images. Giving you the full resolution by requiring double the framerate.

That said the only 3d TV still on the market are LGs OLEDS. several of the samsung JS(2015) series and 2 I think of Samsungs KS(2016) series(the KS8000 and the KS8500, Because its just the flat and curved versions of the same TV)
